FTA'ers Visit And Watch Teachers Members of the Wawasee Future Teachers of Arterica, Phi Tau Alpha Chapter, visited one of the Lakeland junior high schools ar Lakeland elementary schools Tuesday. March 14. The FTA’ers arrived at the schools at 8 am. to watch how professional teachers work in the classroom. The observers returned to Wawasee at noon. March 20-25 is state FTA week. Gretchen Love and Sandy Strand are going to represent their Phi Tau Alpha chapter as voting delegates at the State FTA convention, at North Central high school, Indianapolis, Saturday. March 25.

The play is directed by Alan Zerkel, a graduate of Manchester college and in his first year at Wawasee where he is speech, radio and television instructor.

JONI CAPLE Joni Renee Caple is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Caple of Syracuse. She is taking psychology, sociology, exploratory teaching, advanced physical \ education, typing, literature ‘and government this year. I Physical education and exploratory teaching are her favorite subjects. She has been a member of the Y-teens for three years, GAA for three yeaijs, FTA for one year, volleyball team for one year, track team for one year and band for two years. Joni is a member of the Wawasee Heights football squad, Amateur Athletics union, Junior Olymics, and Roadrunner Jogging team. She placed second in the state at Junior Olympics in 1971 in the 440 relay, has a roller derby jamming award for 1969-70 and won an athletic supporter award in Alien county in judo in 1972. Joni plans to attend Ball State university and major in physical education. This WHS senior has one sister, Bernadette Ann, 15, a freshman at Wawasee. She works at Smith-Walbridge in the summer. Track is Joni’s favorite sport and “The Godfather” by Mario Puzo is her favorite book. Her hobbies are skiing, running and tennis. —WHS—CARLYNN BAUMGARTNER Carlynn Baumgartner is the daughter of Janice Baumgartner of r 4 Syracuse and Robert Baumgartner of Milford. She plans to work this summer and to attend Ball State university in the fall. Carlynn is taking cadet teaching, psychology, sociology, English, concert band and government this year. English and government are her faverite subjects. She has been a member of the student council for one year, band for four years, FTA for one year. National Honor Society for one year, GAA for three years, and Y-teens for two years. Her brother, Steve, is 22 and attends Northern Arizona university. Carlynn enjoys watching basketball, track, football and swimming, meets. “MASH” and “Catch 22” are her favorite books. Her hobbies are water skiing and reading. —WHS—ANNITAIttOORE Mr. and Mrs. Gearold R. Moore of r 2 Syracuse are the parents of Annita Lynn Moore. Lynn is taking sociology, concert choir, shorthand, bookkeeping, English and government. Shorthand and bookkeeping are her favorite subjects. She is another of the very busy members of the senior class and has been a member of the choir for four years, drama club for one year, FFA for one year. Health careers club for three years. Pep club for four years, the National Honor Society for one year, Girls’ Sports club for one year and Latin club for' two years. She has also been a member of the 4-H club for five years. She has a letter in choir and a letter in Health careers. x After graduating from WHS she plans to enter Parkview school of nursing at Fort Wayne. The eldest of five children she has two brothers and two sisters. Dave is 16 and a sophomore, Karen is 14 and in the eighth grade, Mike is 10 and in the fifth grade and Jane is one. Football and basketball are her favorite sports. Playing the piano, swimming and reading are her hobbies. -WHSRAY BECHTOLD Ray Alan Bechtold plans to attend college in Florida after graduating. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bechtold of r 4 Syracuse. This year Ray is taking radio and television, English 12, choir, government and biology Radio and television are his favorite subjects. He has been a member of the golf team for two years, the concert chorus for four years and the radio and tv dub for one year. An older brother, Steve is at-
tending IU where he is a parttime professor. Steve has his BA and MA degrees and is working on his PHd at the Bloomington university. A sister, Mrs. Tarry (Marilyn) Robbins is teaching a fifth grade class in Lafayette. Ray’s younger brother, Jeff, is in thfe seventh grade. Football is his favorite sport. “Grapes of Wrath’’ by Steinbeck is his favorite book. Cycle riding and astronomy are his favorite hobbies. —WHS—CLARK RASSI Lowell and Mary Anne Rassi of r 2 Milford are the parents of WHS senior Clark Rassi. Clark is taking biology, physiology, band, English 12 and government this year. Advanced biology is his favorite subject. Clark has been on the wrestling team two years, in band one year, a member of the National Honor Society for one year, science club one year, Spanish dub four years and ski dub one year. He is also a member of the 4-H and it’s junior leaders organization and the Veterinary Science club. Clark entered the champion cross beef steer at the Kosciusko county fanin 1971. rHe plans to enter a preveterinary program at Purdue university in the fall. A sister, Joann, is 16 and a junior at WHS and a brother Doug, is 12 and in the sixth grade at Milford. This WHS senior works at New Paris Silo and Equipment, Inc., in the summer. Basketball and tennis are his favorite sports. Raising and showing beef cattle and quarter horses is his hobby. - WHS—PEGGE DOTY Pegge Diane Doty is the daughter of Kate and Harry Dale Doty of Turkey Creek drive, Milford. She is taking sociology, physology, band, English and government. A very active member of the senior class. Peg has been in band four years, choir two years, GAA two years, Girls Sports club one year, girls basketball one year, drama four years, executive council one year, ski dub one year, FTA one year, and the music dub one year. She is secretary of the Elkhart county 4H saddle club and competed for the Kosciusko county fair queen title this past year. Peg has an outstanding 4-H member award. After graduating she plans to attend Manchester college. Her older brother, Kelt, attended the Career Academy in Milwaukee, Wis., and a younger sister, Janny Sue is in the fourth grade at Milford. Peg works at Drs. Ostendorff and Zehr’s clinic in Milford. He bobbies include reading, horseback riding and being with neople. - WHS—PATRICK SPEARMAN Robert and June Spearman of r 3 Syracuse are parents of Patrick Alan Spearman. Pat is taking chemistry n, English 12, personal finance, government this year and is senior leader in physical education. Chemistry and person finance are his favorite subjects. He has been on the football team four years, track team four years and swimming team one year. He is a member of the FTA, Letterman’s club and served on the executive council for two years. Pat received honorable mention in NLC football during the 1971 season. The eldest of five children, his younger brothers and sisters are Tom, 16, a junior at Wawasee; Denny, 13, in the eighth grade at Milford; Lorene, 12, in the sixth grade; and Joanna, 10, in the fourth grade.. Pat works at Augsburger’s in Syracuse. Track and football are his favorite sports. “Cry, The Beloved Country” is Ins favorite book. His hobbies are hunting, swimming and all types of sports.
Phi Tau Alpha Chapter Celebrates FTA Week
State FTA week is March . 2025. The week is designated to promote Future Teachers of America and its work. American public education rests on the ideals set forth by Horace Mann, who is known as the father of the American public school system. He began his work in education as secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education on July 1,1837. During the centennial of that event which was observed throughout the United States in 1937, the Future Teachers of America had its beginning under the leadership of the National Education Association. The purposes of Indiana FTA, an affiliate of the Indiana State Teachers Association, are: to decure closer cooperation and unity among the Indiana chapters of FTA and with the state and national education

associations; to provide opportunities for leadership and the exchange of ideas; to promote public interest in and support of education; and to provide its members with experiences and chances of exploring the teaching profession. The Wawasee FTA chapter was chartered February, 1969. The chapter was named Phi Tau Alpha (the Greek letters for FTA). The original sponsors were Miss Ruth Angle and Terry Iden. The first president was Sandy Yeager. Other past presidents were: Pat Beer, Vicki Walker, and Shelley Kaiser. Wawasee FTA is one of the most active chapters in Indiana. Phi Tau Alpha participates actively on state, area, and local levels. In the past the clyb has received awards for its FTA scrapbook; was sweepstakes winner in 1971; its members have
Five From Webster Qualify For Regional Science Fair
A total of five students from the eighth grade class at North Webster qualified for regional science fair competition during the local fair held March 13. There were approximately 250 projects on display by junior high and elementary students. Qualifying for the regional were Kathy Koenigshof, Doug Doty, Dyanne Tracy, Debbie Engelberth and Kelly Miller. In all there were 14 first place winners, 15 second place winners, nine third place winners, 11 fourth place winners and 11 honorable mention awards. Other first place winners were Scott Eddy, Marlys Staley, Jeanne Dye, Lynn Haney, Christine Taylor, Debbie Bause, Scott Coffing, Joe Clark and Stacey Kuhn. Receiving second place awards were Ralph Reiff, Jane Fawley, Laura Kunklfe, Mitzi Watson, Janie Butts, Worth Packer, Kim Danner, Beth Reiff, Darsee Staley, Becky Weeks, Mike Richardson, Steve Read, Lonnie Black, John Locke and Lori Coy. Third place honors went to Ken Hamman, Debbie Gerke, Beth
been candidates for state offices; and in 1971 the Miss FTA of Indiana was Wawasee’s Karen Allen. FTA is responsible for worthwhile projects and programs at Wawasee. Examples of these projects are: open house swap day; a rap session with teachers; a S4OO scholarship fund; exchange program with North Wood FTA which Wawasee sponsored in its first year; observation day in the junior highs and elementaries; observance of American Education Week, State FTA Week, and Teaching Career Week; the annual teachers’ tea; the annual fall dressdown; the elf program (secret pal) with teachers; participation in the area and state FTA conventions; and participation in the school’s exploratory teaching program. Wawasee FTA is currently working for the state Honor Chapter award.

The planning committee for the fair was James Hite, chairman; Elaine Roberts, Phyllis Haney, John Hayes and G. LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs; Virgil Bobeck of Syracuse recently returned a one-week trip to Spain and brief visit into Africa with members of a tour group.
