facts about ■OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind. g By JERI SEELY • Jim Sumpter has his claim in for seeing the first robin of the year. I’m still looking for mine, how about you? Did you read Norman Vanlaningham’s poem “My Dopey Ideas” on the school page of last week’s paper? When you know youngsters have thoughts like those told in the poem you soon realize that not all of the younger generation are bad, in fact, most of them are pretty level headed kids. Norm is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Vanlaningham of near Our Town. Books are beginning to arrive at the junior high school here in Milford to be placed in the library at the school in memory of Randy Neff and Larry Sherman, two junior high school students who were killed in a lake accident last fall. A warm welcome goes to Mr. and Mrs. Keith Smallwood who will be operating Smallwood’s Service Center just south of Our Town. The Smallwoods will have *charge of Christner Oil’s latest Sunoco station, formerly Martin Motors. With the March winds blowing a little warmer these days many people are getting spring fever. Mrs. Glen (Jean) Treesh called Tuesday as we were finishing this column to report she had seen a robin in her back yard on Saturday, making her a firm believer that spring is on its way. It’s time for our weekly soapbox lecture — this week it’s on rubbish. The simple fact is there is to much of it in Our Town. It’s a good thing it’s almost time for the annual fix-up, paint-up and cleanup campaign. Milford needs something! , I I didn’t realize there were so many old buildings that need to be repaired or torn down in this town. And, the trash is something else! Reports were given Monday of many out-buildings and back porches being filled to overflowing with garbage and other forms of trash. Even the railroad crossings in this town look like they need to be replaced. Let’s ail look around and see what can be done to clean-up and improve Our Town. Let’s all join together and make it a place to be proud of. Teachers Hold Workshop, Hear Roger McClain The Lakeland teachers held a work shop last Friday afternoon and heard Roger McClain of the Indiana State Board of Health talk on primary and intermediate students’ use of drugs and drug addiction. He told teachers the importance of a correct attitude toward drugs and of teaching children not to take anything from strangers and not to get into cars with strangers. McClain also told teachers about stealing at school and cheating and showed the film “Lunch Money” which showed thoughts of a girl who had her lunch money stolen, the boy who took the money and the youngster who had witnessed the theft.
