Tom Spear Talks About His Warriors

Before coming to Wawasee, coach Tom Spear spent three years at Elwood. Coach Spear lives on Lake Tippecanoe. He is married and has four children, three girls and one boy. Spear has a total of 15 years coaching experience, 14 years as a head coach and one year as junior varsity. During his 14 years as head coach, Spear has a very fine record of no less than five sectional winners, three coming at Brookston and two at Frontier._ The Wawasee coach has been very pleased with his Warriors’ progress to date, with a noteable change coming after the Warriors won the school’s first tournament championship this year at Goshen. Coach Spear pointed out that since the tournament the Warriors have averaged well over 90 points a game, also pointing out the fact he feels two or three of the teams would not be considered top-notch competition. Coach Spear feels his team’s biggest asset is its shooting and running ability, pointing out that four boys have over a 50 per cent shooting percentage, a fact any Warrior fan will attest too. Warrior guard Tim Blue has hit 80 out of 160 attempts for a fine even 50 per cent. Johnny Hamilton is shooting just over the 51 per cent mark with Dan Mosier just over 50 per cent and the team as a whole shooting an unvelievable 48.486 per cent! When asked about his Warrior defensive play, the coach said he “is some what pleased.’’ He said, “90 per cent of defense is just trying and putting forth the effort.’’ Coach Spear feels his Warriora are most effective in their man to man defense. In evaluation of six key Wawasee players coach Spear has this to say: JEFF HUGHES — “Probably the team’s most consistant rebounder, very good all around player,” pausing he adds, “he’s a year or two from reaching his full potential, as he just keeps improving with every game.’’

MARK WORKMAN — “Mark gives us good rebounding, also gives the team’s ball players confidence with each shot they take, the mental factor, knowing if the shot is missed, Mark will more than likely be there for the offensive rebound.” JACK BEER — ‘‘A very fine shooter, especially effective against the opposition’s zone defense.” Which Jack can riddle with his fine comer shooting. DAN MOSIER — “A team sparkplug, very accurate shooter, probably one of the best ‘sixth man’ around.” . TIM BLUE — “The team’s quarterback, one of the best free / throw shooters on the club. Plays excellent defense and always / seems to come through with the big baskets when the team needs them most.” JOHN HAMILTON — “Johnny can break open a game with very explosive shooting, good offensive rebounder. Always seems to get the team eight-12 rebounds, but is especially effective in breaking games open as he has scored on occasion, six to seven fieldgoals in a quarter’s action.” Asked about the 1972 sectional, Coach Spear gave these two points: “Confidence as to beat any team in the sectional.” “Mentally knowing you have a job to do and knowing we can do the job.” He added he has no preference in the team’s first draw. Coach Spear is a very likeable man with many fine qualities which one can see in his boys’ play and attitude. Confidence, intelligence and the desire to do the complete job. Win or lose the whole Lakeland community can be proud of Wawasee’s fine administration. Head coach Tom Spear, his very fine assistant Dale Brannock and the Lakeland fans who have shown this very fine 197172 Warrior team their loyal support.
