JI MP SHOT — Jeff Hughes, a senior at Wawasee high school, playing in his last regular season game of the 1971-72 season, is shown as he goes up for a jump shot as two Northfield players look on in astonishment. Hughes scored a total of 29 points during the evening.
Warriors Crush Northfield Await Triton On Thursday
By TED SPEICHER Using a continuous full court press! along with powered offensive attack. Wawasee’s Warriors ended the season on a fine winning note crushing a good Northfield team 84-58 The win was the Warriors 16th in 20 games, losing only to Mishawaka, Warsaw, West Noble and North Wood The Warriors jumped off to an early lead as John Hamilton scored on the opening tip off play. From the offset the Warriors looked very good in all aspects of the game's defense, offense and attitude The Warriors

threatened to blow the game wide open in the early going, grabbing an early 17-6, but the scrappy Norsemen would not submit to the early scoring display as they battled back the Warriors to a 1910 first quarter break. The Warriors pulled to an early 25 14 second quarter as Hughes. Blue and Hamilton all connected from the perimeter. Johnny Hamilton scored a nice lay up on a nice run patterned play giving Wawasee a 27-16 lead with 3:16 remaining in the second quarter With 3:00 remaining in quarter two, the Warriors found themselves unable to score momentarily as the Norsemen pulled to
within five. However, Northfield was unable to contain the Warriors in the final minute as they again pulled away to a nine point lead, as Wawasee’s Jeff Hughes stripped the nets with 35 seconds left in the quarter. With Warriors' center Mark Workman back in the game starting the second half the Warriors completely dominated the game from the outside. Wawasee’s pressing zone defense completely broke Northfield's ball handling composure as Hughes and Hamilton, playing the front end of the press, continuously harrassed and stole numerous passes as the Warriors, behind tremendous team work and hustling completely put the game out of reach as Northfield fans, coaches and players watched the overpowering Warrior attack in awe. When the dusF had cleared the only thing able to slow the Warriors down was time as it ran out in the third quarter with Wawasee leading 61-39. Coach Tom Spear used his bench often in the fourth quarter, as each player saw his share of action and each performed well. The final score of 84-58 assured Wawasee their 16th win of the 1971-72 season The long, very successful, regular season is over, all that remains is the tournaments played one at a time. All eyes and thoughts are cast in one direction — the Warsaw sectional. Wawasee vs Triton Thursday night in first round action. Go Warriors'.
