Prize Heyerdahl Film "Ra," Opens Here Soon "The Ra Expeditions.” awardwinning film account of Thor Heyerdahl’s epic voyages in a paper boat from Africa to the Americas opens soon in this area for a limited, exclusive run. Heyerdahl, famous for his KonTiki and Aku-Aku adventures, made the voyages with eight other brave men, a monkey and a duck to prove that a boat made only of papyrus reeds and rope — a copy of those used thousands of years ago — could have carried Egyptians across the Atlantic to South America many centuries before Columbus. His first attempt, through howling storms" and deadly dams, failed only 500 miles short of landfall when the boat’s stem section broke up and sank His second attempt succeeded dramatically. miles in 57 days from Safi, Morocco to Barbados in the West Indies. Movie cameraman for the voyage was Kei Ohara of Japan, who shot from every conceivable angle aboard the craft as well as from a rubber dinghy. He managed to have his camera focused on every exdting detail of the voyage — raging storms, the crisis of a broken steering oar. shipboard shenanigans, sharks cruising hungrily around the tiny craft, near disaster, then final triumph “The Ra Expeditions” has been called "the most incredible adventure film of all time.” It received warm acclaim at the 1971 MIFED International Film Festival in Milan, Italy, where it was a winner in the documentary category. Rated G, "The Ra Expeditions” is the most exciting family entertainment to come this way in a long time.
Hurryin Hoosiers By J. Q. Fann MICHIGAN STATE 81 — INDIANA 73 and goodby NIT. We still had a shot at the NIT but it would take a miracle. We shall now see whether or not the team has the mental fibre to be a powerhouse in Coach Knight’s second year in 72-73 or will have to wait for a rebuilding job. We started well as JOBY WRIGHT, with a fine game, blocked a shot, took a rebound and hit for 6 but our balance hurt again as we didn’t get much outside and we fell behind 13. A surge at the beginning at the second half tied the score and one behind we blew two three pointers in five seconds plus turnovers and we were out of the game. It is the lack of overall balance plus mistakes. DAVE SHEPHERD is recovering from the auto accident and JOBY is playing well. STEVE DOWNING got in foul trouble early but had a good game in spite of it though it hurt defensively. FRANK WILSON got back in the game and JERRY MERMERING is coming along to give front line reserve help. JOHN RITTER had four charging fouls, a couple pretty chintzy and I think this the biggest factor in the game. We had several three second violations and I suspect the Michigan State coaches were bending the refs ears. One, at least, had the cameras in focus and was called pretty doggoned quick A red hot Michigan State shooter was Robinson but he is a good shooter anytime. He shot from every angle, off balance, everywhere. Our football recruiting is full blast. LaPorte’s AL SZAWARA got away — Tennessee in the SEC but our boys are working even harder on a big fullback by the name of JIM KELLEHEE in Fort Wayne, as is Colorado, Michigan and, everybody else. I would rather have KELLEHER but such a player is hard to come by even though we have the ideal educational setup. Fort Wayne had two other Big Ten Big Big ones and there are probably more in northern Indiana than any of the past few years. MIKE EIKENBERRY. from Fort Wayne is an all-starter who has been offered a tender by every team in the conference as well as many other big ones. He comes from good stock, wants a business education and wants to stay at home. We know we have that combination the best in the midwest — ?? and the ?? is for his status, not our combination. The football coaches must face — Where will Rodney Harris play. Play he will but where? The Scat Scooter can fly, plays football at 165 and is a great potential halfback passer. He should'say but — will it be for StarlingjWho looked so good, for Chariey Byrnes our premier flankeL wide receiver where Mike Flanagan from the freshmen looks better than Butcher? When a boy of this calibre has a fight to find a place to play it is a pleasant coaching headacher that coaches love. Football takes depth — A fine one back of a fine one.
