Warriors Overcome Whitko Stall For 59-48 Victory
By TED SPEICHER Wawasee overcame an early defasite lead by an upset minded Whitko Wildcat team only after -the “turtle type ball” caused the high geared Warriors troubles for three hard fought quarters Warrior Tim Blue connected on a jumper with 30 seconds remaining in the third quarter providing the Warriors with the lead for the first time in the game They pulled away in the fourth quarter for a hard fought 59-48 win As anticipated, the Warriors met the same styled, slow down ball game which was so successful against Warsaw one week earlier when Whitko upset the highly reguarded Warsaw squad. Whitko wasted no time in making their intentions known as the Wildcats jumped to an earlylead connecting on their first four shots. The early lead forced Wawasee to play their style of game The tough pressing zone defense of the Warriors kept the first quarter a toss-up With the help of a beautiful inbounds scoring play by JohnnyHamilton. Wawasee kept the first quarter knotted 12-12 The Warriors fell behind early in the second period 16-13 as the slowed down game started posing still more trouble as Warriors Jeff Hughes and Mark Workman each picked up his third foul.

With Hughes. Workman and Tom Fribley all on the bench with three fouls Whitko captilized on Wawasee‘s weakened board strength by increasing the lead 22-16. Warriors Tim Blue and Johnny Hamilton combined for some good team work as Tim intercepted a pass and scored and with 3:00 left in the second quarter Blue, with a great assist from teammate John Hamilton again stripped the nets from underneath to bring the Warriors within two — 22-20. Unfortunately the rally was short lived as the Warriors committed three fouls m 40 seconds, giving the stubborn Wildcats a 29-24 lead at intermission. The opening minutes of the third quarter again found the Warriors cold, as they were unable to score a field goal for three minutes Then, as the great wind from the west. Warriors Hamilton and Hughes along with some nice defensive work by Beer and Blue tied the game 36-36 as Hamilton scored on a fine driving lay-up with 1:10 remaining in the third. Tim Blue hit with 30 seconds remaining to give the Warriors the lead, only to see Whitko come right back to knot the score 38-38. One of the key plays of the night came at the buzzer as Warrior Jack Beer hit on an offensive tipin. giving the Warriors that all important 40-38 lead going into the final quarter of play. The fourth quarter saw the Warriors taking complete command as the Wawasee defense, which played a supurb game allowed Whitko only two field goals. The big play of the fourth came with 6:27 left to play in the game as Jeff Hughes intercepted a pass and on a dead run hit Tim Blue with a behind the back pass which resulted in a three point play putting the Warriors up seven. 47-40 The game ended as it started only this time the Warriors were holding the ball, completely reversing the action with the game ending in Wawasee s favor 59-48. Tim Blue lead the Warriors in scoring with 20. Jeff Hughes
added 18 and John Hamilton hit for 14. Field goal percentages showed Wawasee made 19 of 44 for 44 per cent while Whitko hit 15 or 35 for 40 per cent. In b-team action the Wawasee junior Warriors lost a close one 46-43 The game saw the lead changing hands several times with Whitko holding over for the victory. Holden, Pierceton resident, and president of the Whitko Classroom Teachers association today notified democratic party leaders that he is very seriously considering running for congress from Indiana’s second congressional district. In a letter sent to all party chairman and vice-chairman in the district, Holden stated that if he becomes a candidate, the announcement will be made by the end of January or early part of February. Holden is a junior high social studies teacher and athletic director and coach at the South Whitley middle school. In 1968 he ran for joint state representative from DeKalb and Steuben counties, winning the primary before losing in the fall in the heavily republican district. Despite the odds, he put up an extremely active campaign including door to door campaigning. In 1970 he was a delegate to the democratic state
