Hit Century Mark Second Week In A Row
By TED SPEICHER The weather around Warrior country jumped 10 degrees Saturday as Spears’ Warriors could have melted the ice on Lake Wawasee as they melted the Akron Flyers spirit if nothing else. Led by Wawasee’s Jeff (’’Jerry Hughes with tremendous backing from all teammates, the Warriors defeated a tough Akron squad 115-97. Akron, with a 41 point fourth quarter effort, made the game’s final score appear much closer than it could have been. The game started slow as both teams battled for the lead. At 2:44 in the first quarter Jeff Hughes, Jack Beer and John Hamilton scored 10 points in two minutes with Johnny cashing in on a three point play in the closing seconds of the first quarter to give Wawasee a slight 20-15 lead. In the second quarter Jeff Hughes hit two quick jumpers and with a fine assist from Johnny Hamilton cashed in on his third field goal before Akron had a chance to score However, Akron being a very fine shooting club, refused to concede a very large lead to the Warriors who threatened to break the game wide open with some fine help on the boards from Tom Fribley and some fancy shooting from Dan Mosier ' Wawasee held a 49-39 halftime advantage with Jeff Hughes contributing 21 first half points. The third quarter proved to be the big game breaker as Wawasee ripped the nets for 31 points while holding Akron to 17. Getting very good outside shooting from Jack Beer, Hughes and Hamilton seemed to spark Wawasee as their fastbreak soon opened up an 80-56 lead. The fourth quarter was absolute pandemonium as Warrior HITS CENTURY MARK — Jeff Hughes was caught by a MailJournal photographer as he scored the two points to give the Warriors IM points on the board Saturday night. Hughes hit for 35 during the night.

fans began yelling for Wawasee to break the century mark Warrior Jeff Hughes, as though ' he was destined, hit three field goals in succession with the third one coming at 4:21 in the fourth quarter as the fans and players were bringing the rafters down Less than a minute later Coach Tom Spear removed all five of his starters, each getting a deserving standing ovation The game was truly one of the most exciting ever played in the Warrior House with every member of the team contributing in some way as Wawasee rewrote its own history which was made only days prior to the game. Akron cashed in on the charity stripe as the Flyers hit 39 of 43 attempts while Wawasee cashed in on 21 of 25 attempts for 85 per cent. Wawasee also hit on 47 of 91 attempts from the field B-Team Action Balanced scoring by Mike Zurcher, Bob Mosier and Craig Fidler proved to be enough for Wawasee’s fine junior varsity team as they scored a double slam Friday and Saturday by winning both games. The young Warriors led at all stops with the fourth quarter being the big one with 23 points topping Akron 67-55 Box scores on the varsity game follow: WAWASEE (115) — Blue 612. WHS Stops Bulldogs With 76-59 Victory
Wawasee’s Warriors traveled to Egg Town Friday and came away with a 76-59 win over outclassed Mentone. After receiving a tremendous ovation from loyal Warrior fans Wawasee moved quickly as John Hamilton connected from 15 on the tip off play. Neither team was able to score much for the first four minutes as Wawasee’s 2-1-2 half court zone press made it virtually impossible for Mentone to move the ball within scoring range, in the same token Wawasee was bothered to some extent by the size of Mentone’s gym as it seemed to effect the timing of thcfir patented running game. At the end of the first quarter Wawasee lead 20-8. In the second quarter Wawasee continued to keep Mentone at bay with their very aggressive defensive play. Midway thru the second quarter play became ragged with Wawasee unable to find the hoop as the Warriors failed to score for a period of 3)fc minutes. Wawasee, however, went to the dressing room leading 40-22 on last minute shots by Hamilton and Hughes. Wawasee, behind some hot shooting from Jack Beer, got its offense in high gear early in the third quarter. With Mark Workman doing a fine job defensively as he blocked numerous shots the Warriors all seemed to come to life. They quickly doubled the score 50-25 with four minutes left in the third quarter. As the Warrior five continued to run the Bulldogs ragged on defense and offense Coach Tom Spear began to send his trusty reserves in midway thru the third quarter. The fourth quarter saw Wawasee’s Fred Beer, Dan and Bob Mosier and Mike Zurcher showing good hustle as they played very well as a unit. With the Mosiers. Beer and Zurcher all scoring in the fourth quarter Wawasee came away with a 76-59 victory. Box scores follow: WAWASEE (76) - Blue 501, Hughes 652, Hamilton 823. Workman 022, Mosier, Dan 203, Beer.
