Over a period of years Mrs. Sprague has either collected or made scaled-to-size furnishings, including miniature Christmas decorations which fascinate young readers who frequent the LRC. The amount of club dues was discussed and set. A roller skating party was discussed and plans will be made by the officers Lester Krull, the adult leader, handed out the 4-H enrollment cards for the coming year and the 1971 record books were handed out to all 18 members present. The new projects for this year are veterinary study , rockets and aquatic science. Joe Cousins will present a demonstration at the coming meeting The next meeting will be held on Monday. TO EUROPE - This coming summer of 1972. Ronald D. Corson of Wawasee high school, in cooperation with the American Leadership Study Groups at Clark university, is sponsoring a five-week study tour of Western Europe. The A.L.S.G. program is designed to provide young people with a truly enriching and educational experience. Mr. Corson has been appointed Io be the area Representative for the American Leadership Study Groups. The program features a week in residence at the Universities of London. Rome, and Paris, with two additional weeks of study and travel between these points. AU told, the itinerary will include such places as London. Brussels. Cologne. Heidelberg. Munich. Innsbruck. Venice. Florence. Rome. Capri. Milan. Lucerne and Paris. BRAY FAMILY DLXNER HELD Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bray of Milford entertained their family at a Christmas dinner Sunday. Gifts were exchanged in the afternoon. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Charles Myers and family of Syracuse. KENNETH SCHERNEHAU Our first senior of the week Is Kenneth Allen Schernehau, Jr., son of Kenneth and Virginia Schernehau, r 1 Leesburg. This year Ken is taking physics, physical education, bookkeeping, radio and television, government and English. His favorite subjects are physics and radio and television. He has been a member of the swimming team for three years, the football squad for two years, Spanish club, Letterman’s club, speech club, radio and television club and the drama club, all for three years. He also belongs to his church’s youth group. After graduation in the spring. Ken plans to go to college in Florida. He has a 19-year-old sister, Cathy Lynn who plans to attend college next fall and a 10-year-old brother William who is in the fifth grade at North Webster. Ken works at the Oswego Supermarket. He lists swimming as his favorite sport. His hobbies are swimming, hockey and playing basketball. - WHS — SCOTT SHANNON Scott Grayling Shannon lists machine shop welding as his favorite subject. 1 After graduating he plans to enter the armed forces and work as a machines!. Scottie is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Shannon of r 3 Syracuse. He is taking government, English, math II and second period machine shop welding. He has been a member of the boys pep block for four years and is a member of the Wawasee ski club. Scottie has two sisters, Mrs. Myron (Connie) Leer and Teresa, a sophomore. Basketball is his favorite sport. His favorite books are Mark Twain novels. Hunting, models, water skiing, basketball and baseball are his hobbies. —WHS—DAVID LEE VICE David Lee Vice is the son of Robert and Jeanette Vice of 319 North Harrison street, Syracuse. He works at the Chase Bag factory in Goshen. His favorite are baseball, hockey and tobogganing. David is taking concert choir, understanding of music, theory of music, auto mechanics, government and typing one.‘Choir and music understanding are his favorites. He participated in intramurals for one year, boys cheer block for one year, baseball for one year, and concert choir for four years. Her activities include three years in the science club, four years in health careers club, one year in the sports club, three years in the cheerblock and one year in FT A. She has a letter in health careers. After graduation she plans to attend Parkview Memorial hospital in Fort Wayne for a career in nursing. Janet works at the home of Dr. and Mrs. E. L. Fosbrink. Basketball and football are her favorite sports. “Native Son” is her favorite book and reading and watching sporting events are her hobbies. - WHS—PAUL VAN DYKE Paul Wesley Van Dyke has been a member of the radio club for one year. Letterman’s club for two years, science club for three years, trainer for the football team one year and on the basketball team two years and baseball team one year. He is also a Sea Explorer, a member of the Civil Defense and of the Hoosier Lakes radio club. After graduating he plans to enter trade school and major in radio broadcasting. Wes is the son of Mary Van Dyke of 100 Medusa Court, Syracuse. He is taking radio and television, art 111, math, government and arts and crafts. Art and radio and television are his favorite subjects. Basketball, bowling and sailboat racing are his favorite sports. “When Worlds Collide” is his favorite book. His hobbies include amateur radio listening and the making and selling of gem jewelry. —WHSWILLIAM LEEMON William O. Leemon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William O. Leemon of 301 North Henry St., Milford. He is taking psychology, sociology, exploratory teaching, government, English and typing. His favorite subjects are English and government. He has been a member of the football team for four years, the basketball team one year, track team for one year, Letterman’s dub for four years, Spanish club for two years, student council for one year, executive council for two years and the National Honor Society. He has also attended Boys’ State. After graduating Bill plans to attend Ball State university in a pre-law curriculum. Bill has two brothers and two sisters — Mrs. Philip (Andrea) Hahn is 24 and a beautician living on r 2 Nappanee. Kathy, 22, is a grade school teacher in Lowell, John, 19, works at Western Rubber Co., in Goshen; and Don, 17, is a junior at Wawasee. Football is this senior’s favorite sport. His favorite book is a biography entitled “Clarence Darrow, Counselor at Law. Swimming and sports are his hobbies.
KEVIN KNISLEY Kevin Lynn Knisley plans to work on a farm or in a factory after graduating. He is the son of Kenneth R. and Kathryn L. Knisley of r 2 Syracuse. He is taking agriculture three, art four, advanced physical education, government, arts and crafts. Advanced phys ed and arts and crafts are his favorites. He has participated in boys’ intramurals four years and the snow ski club. He has also been a junior bowler for seven years and has two perfect attendance awards and is a champion barefoot skiier. The eldest of four children his brothers and sister are Dana John, 16, a sophomore; Brian Keith, 15, a freshman; and Dixie Colleen. 10, in the sixth grade. Bowling and water skiing are his favorite sports. His favorite book is Portnoy’s Complaint by Philip Roth. He lists girl watching as his hobby. Enrollment Cards Due All 4-H Dairy, Beef, Sow and litter, and Sheep flock enrollment cards are due in the Elkhart county extension office by December 30, so that the January 1 deadline can be met, as the office will be closed December 31 - January 3 for the holiday, according to Terry Wilds, extension agent — youth. All 4-H beef animals, steers and heifers, must be enrolled. Dairy junior and senior calves have until April to enroll. Members wishing to exhibit a litter at the Indiana State Fair are the oily ones required to enroll their animals in the 4-H pig project and 4-H members wishing to exhibit yearling ewes at the fair are the only 4-H lamb members who need to enroll. Slippery Roads Cause Os Accidents Damages were done in the amount of SIOO to a car driven by William J. Murphy, 23, of South Bend Tuesday morning. Murphy was traveling east on CR 1300 N, two miles east of Milford when his car slid on slippery pavement and ran through a fence owned by Leon Tucker of Milford There was $25 damage to the fence. Deputy sheriff Ron Robinson investigated. Strikes Pole In another accident at 7:35 am. Tuesday, a car driven by Kip Ernest Tom, 16, r 2 Leesburg, slid on ice and struck a NIPSCo pole on CR 1300 N, three miles west of Syracuse. Deputy Robinson, who investigated this accident also, listed damages at S4OO. Cantata Sunday At Church Off God “The Light of Christmas,” a Christmas cantata by L. S. Clark will beC presented Sunday, Dec. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Syracuse Church of God. The presentation will be by the senior choir under the direction of Mark Wagner featuring soloists Mrs. Carl Hadley and Gary Firestone. Also featured will be the Junior choir under direction of Mrs. Ralph Bushong. TROPHIES FOR SPEECH TOURNAMENT
Wawasee To Host Speech Tournament
The first Wawasee Invitational Speech tournament will be held at Wawasee high school on Saturday, Dec. 18, with Alan Zerkel, speech instructor at Wawasee high as coordinator. Gary Nordmann of Manchester high assisted Zerkel in setting up the tournament and making it a reality. Schools entered are Manchester, Warsaw, Southwood, Rochester, Columbia City, Carroll (Allen county), Penn, Concord, Lakeland, Plymouth, Northfield, Goshen, East Noble, Wawasee Prep, and Wawasee. Manchester, Southwood, Concord, Warsaw and Carroll are highly regarded teams while Penn and Prep also warrant attention. These schools will bring along 250 students to participate in the tournament. The invitational will contiwwdl throughout the day jEi registration at 7:30 and be presented at 4 p.m. by principal Henry L. Smith.
Goodwill Club Holds Yule Dinner Members of the Goodwill Extension Homemakers club and guests, numbering 22 in all, held a carry-in dinner on December 8 at the House of Friendship south of Syracuse. Club officers, Mrs. Glenn Stiffler, Mrs. Fred Butt, Mrs. Ray Darr and Mrs. Bernard Roberts, were in charge. The doxology was by Mrs. Elmo Shock followed by meditations, “Thoughts of Christmas” and “An Old Fashioned Christmas,” by Mrs. Burton Butt. During the afternoon, 19 Christmas gift plates were prepared to be taken to shut-ins in the area. Christmas carols were sung by the group with Mrs. Shock leading and Mrs. Elmer Baugher at the piano. Mrs. Fred Butt received the door prize. A gift exchange concluded the afternoon activities. Legion Has Christmas Party The American Legion of Milford held its annual Christmas party Saturday night at the Milford fire station with 43 Legionnaires and family members present for the carry-in supper. Following supper games for children and adults were played.
Trophy Awards The photo above shows only a few of the awards to be given. In the tournament, students are placed in competition with each other in events such as radio broadcasting, poetry, original oratory, oratorical interpretation, discussion, impromptu, extemporaneous speaking, dramatic and humorous readings. Each event has three rounds of preliminary competition from which the top individuals are picked for finals. Students from Wawasee high include Mark Steury, Lori Steury, Mike Harris, Kirk Prickett, Golden Kuhn, Terry Baldwin. Cindy Sheets, Cindy Hyndman, Lynn McFarland, Donna Kreis. Sue Blue, Peg Doty and Chuck Rapp. The speech department has invited all students in jqnior high through high school who are interested in speech to attend and observe the action.
The Junk Shop Changes Hands The Junk shop, operated in Wawasee Village south of Syracuse for a number of years by Nancy Pratt, . changed ownership last week when Mary Whitehead became the new proprietor. The store handles ne< and used furniture, glassware* antiques and has a large assortment of books Mrs. Whitehead hopes to develop into a "book nook.” Mrs. John Perry, Milford, was hostess for her bridge club’s Christmas party Monday night. Those attending were Mrs. Glen Wuthrich, Mrs. Evar Troup, Mrs. Robert Spearman. Mrs. Don Wolferman. Mrs. Leon Newman. Mrs. Richard Felkner and Mrs. Shirley Herbison.
