Indiana 90 — Kentucky 89, Double Overtime. Steve Downing with only 47 points on a crippled knee. “It’s a good thing he ain’t healthy." A direct quote and the week’s number one comment in Hoosier circles. Oh yes, we beat pre-season ranked Kansas too. And Kentucky at Louisville. With wins over tough Miami, pre-season readers read Kansas, and number 5 Kentucky — we should be known by now. Bob Knight is about to become a password but we have to watch out for High Stepping Ohio. They dumped Ohio State. That game may be over by the time many read this but we have converted from run and shoot to defense and ball control — plus Steve Downing. The freshmen made quite a splurge. Some think that three of them could step into the lineup now. Ahifield from Northfield — near Wabash, Green from Silver Creek and spectacular Laskowski from South Bend were exceptional. Reed, the fine black athlete from Memphis and Allen, the prep school special from Champaign were the other starters. Kamstra, nephew of former I. U. star Phil Buck and Hunter from Danville came in and did good jobs. Our recruiting looks very effective. Along in August I remarked that Jerry Mermering might be

the one to pull out a big game if we got in foul trouble. Steve Downing was the big big man but the winning point was made by one Merry Mermering —a walkon. 1 told you so is a bum phrase but feels good at times. Football 1972? Who will replace Dan Grossman? Danny, more than anyone factor, drove the team to such a mental condition that the Purdue win became a reality. He is a big question, lie has been accepted for Med school. He can go this summer or finish his football career. Tough decision. One player said it — Dan won’t let you lose. He should be worth at least one and maybe more games. Any game of 7 points or under he would be the difference. His replacement — Dan Grossman. A sniff of Roses, shots at All-Conference or AllAmerican. an All-Star game and just plain desire to show your best plus loyalty to friends has to be a factor. He is the type of competitor his dad was at I.U. (watch Rex along the sidelines) and I feel he will be a long time an adult. The one more activity of his youth will be a long memory or a long regret if he passes it. Money and a career —for one more year does represent earning year, buys a lot of things but there are many things money won’t buy and memories are included.

s l,ooo King Os Junior Tennis Scholarship

The new International Palace of Sports foundation of North Webster has announced that arrangements have been completed with Kalamazoo college of Kalamazoo, Michigan for an annual SI,OOO King of Tennis scholastic award to be made in connection with the National Boys and Junior Tennis Championships held there each year since 1943. Honoring the National Junior Tennis Champion, the actual “King Arthur Scholarships’’ will be awarded to deserving students graduating from the alma mater of high schools of the respective honorees. The honorees, for themselves, will receive replicas of the “Royal Sceptre of the Realm of Recreation” — an elaborate gold and silver octagon regal baton one of the world’s most elegant trophies — being created in furtherance of the foundation’s “King Arthur-King of Sports” scholarships and “Lady of the Lake” awards.

Prep Wins Again In Week End Play

Wawasee Prep moved its record to 5-0 with two victories this past week end. On Friday night, Prep defeated White’s Institute, 83-50 at home in a Midland Athletic conference game and Saturday night, romped over Howe Military, 9565, on the losers’ court. The Lakers’ potent offense continued in high gear on both evenings. Friday night, Sylvester Allen paced the victory with 26 points, while Otha Wallace and Rick Mertz added 24 and 10, respectively. The key to victory over White’s was the second quarter performance when Prep outscored the Warriors, 26-6, using a devastating press. Friday night marked the first appearance of 6’9” sophomore, Bob Russell for W’hite’s, who would appear to be heir apparent to last year’s state scoring champion, Tim Saylors. However, Allen limited Russell to one field goal for the evening. Saturday night, Allen and Wallace again combined for a big offensive evening. Allen dropped in 32 points, while Wallace added 29. Mertz and Greg Anderson also finished in double figures with 15 and 10 points, respectively. The Lakers do not wait long to return to action with a game tonight (Wednesday) at Wheeler

In it’s first year of operation, the foundation has also granted “Lady of the Lake” awards in the amount of $5,000 to civic, charitable and educational organizations which sponsor bands, knights, ladies, queens and participants in the “Tournament of Knights” as part of the annual 27-year-old Mermaid Festival at North Webster — the nation’s largest village fete. The foundation was formed in 1970 to combat juvenile delinquency through: 1. Awarding King Arthur-King of Sport scholarships in the names of 20th century Kings of Sport. 2. Staging a Tournament of Knights in connection with the Mermaid Festival. 3. Selecting and enshrining Kings of Sports in an international sports museum. 4.
