Wawasee Stopped By Tigers 76-72

By TED SPEICHER Wawasee clashed with county rival W’arsaw and lost their first conference match up 76-72 Friday night. The game proved to be very emotional as expected, at times more emotion was displayed than basketball. The Warriors rebound power suffered an early set back as Mark Workman contacted two personal fouls with less than one minute gone in the first’quarter. With poor foul shooting and ball handling playing for both teams, the first quarter score gave the Warriors a slight edge — 18-17. Warsaw scored 11 straight points early in the second quarter, while the Warriors were only able to put one field goal and a free throw on the board. With . 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. Warsaw found they could stay with the speedy Warriors by slowing the ball down. Playing aggressive defense Warsaw caused the Warriors to make numerous turnovers midway in the second stanza, pulling ahead 28-20. John Hamilton and Jeff Hughes caught fire and pulled the Warriors within one point 30-29. The Warriors had a very good opportunity to regain the lead as Warsaw's emotional forward Steve Tarner received a technical foul for failing to raise his hand after be fouled Warrior Tim Blue. Unable to score on the opportunity the half ended in Wawasee's favor 34-31. The Warriors blazed to 35-35 ■j® DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK JOHN HAMILTON ’

Warriors Victorious Over Triton Trojans

Wawasee proved themselves a real winner Saturday at the Warrior house in downing a highly regarded Triton squad 71-69. Showing the effects of their hard fought battle against Warsaw, Wawasee’s Warriors fell behind early 4-0. It didn’t take long for the Warriors to charge back into the lead 12-10 as Jeff Hughes connected on a patented Warrior fastbreak with Tim Blue making a nice assist. The Warriors maintained a slim 23-20 point lead with the help of solid free-throw shooting. Johnny Hamilton’s dazzling shooting display combined with an air tight W’arrior defense as Wawasee charged to its largest lead of the night 31-22. 1116 big lead was short lived, however, as Triton roared back to knott the game 37-37 early in the third quarter. it away five consecutive times, giving the Trojans an opportunity to go ahead by six points. Finding the handle as suddenly as they lost it, the Warriors lead by their spark plug guard Jeff Hughes, came back again to knott the game 48-48. Triton’s fine guard Dan Sharp found the range and pushed Triton into a 54-50 third period lead. The fourth period saw the lead changing hands many times with Hamilton, Hughes and Jack Beer all scoring in crucial situations. Jeff Hughes again put the Warriors on top to stay 61-60 at 4:08 in the fourth quarter. Jack Beer hit two key field goals in the last minute to insure a Warrior victory. However, the biggest play of the game was a defensive one as Warrior John Hamilton, who played another fine game, crushed Triton’s hopes of tying the game as he stole a pass with six seconds remaining, giving Wawasee the 71-69 victory. The victory was a tsg one Saturday as the boys pushed their record to 42. Tim Blue played a fine game as he accounted for 16 assists which are sometimes overlooked, but are a very important faze of basketball. The foul shooting and rebounds were very evenly matched. Triton outrebounded by a slight 47-46 margin. Wawasee hit 15 of 19 charity tosses while Triton hit 17 to 21.
