By TED SPEICHER Wawasee gained victory number three Friday at the Warrior house by defeating Concord's Minutemen in the last minute of an overtime BM3. Wawasee lost the opening tip but retaliated with a fastbreak on the defensive rebound and grabbed a 2-0 lead with senior John Hamilton performing the honors. Wawasee soon saw the lead disappear quickly. Behind some fine outside shooting by Concord’s Don Dickey, aided by Wawasee ball handling errors. Concord doubled the score on Wawasee 18-9 with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter. Warrior Jeff Hughes managed to pull the Warriors within five 21-16 as he connected with three seconds left in the quarter on a nice jump shot from the comer. Early in the second quarter neither team was able to score until Warrior Jack Beer connected from the field to bring the Warriors within three, 21-19. Although playing much better

Warrior Jack Beer scored on a fastbreak follow up shot to give Wawasee a slim 31-29 halftime lead. The third quarter saw both teams cold from the field. The quarter found Wawasee and Concord taking turns at leading and one could begin to see a very close finish approaching. Tlie Warriors lost top rebounder Mark Workman via fouls 6:30 in the fourth quarto*. With Tom Fribley IJoing a very fine job on the boards, was able to combat Concord’s superior height. With regulation time running short Concord still maintained a slim 53-51 margin. Warrior John Hamilton put Wawasee ahead SS--53 with 3:17 remaining, scoring on two consecutive? fastbreaks. remaining in the game. A Warrior traveling violation gave Concord another chance, working the ball underneath Concord’s big six foot, four inch Doug Granger scored, throwing the game into an overtime. Concord jumped into a quick four point lead as Granger and Kuhn hit with a little over two minutes left. The turning point came after Concord’s second score, the Minutemen were so dated they neglected to see Warrior John Hamilton streaking toward the basket until it was too late. Johnny’s basket brought the Warriors within two 63-61. Warrior John Hamilton, who played a superb game, connected again from the corner to tie it up 63-63 with 1:32 remaining in the overtime. Jeff Hughes grabbed Concord’s missed shot with 50 seconds left, brought it into Warrior territory where reserve guard Bob Mosier scored from 15 feet out giving Wawasee the lead with 44 seconds left. Jack Beer grabbed a big defensive rebound with 23 seconds left, giving the ball to teammate Jeff Hughes who was fouled twice in 22 seconds and scored four points in the same alotted time to insure a very big welcome of victory for the Wawasee Warriors 69-63. Indiana hoopsters looked fair against Australia, mediocre against Ball State, fine against a very very tough Miami team. Maybe this will be one of those teams that always gets the job done and plays to its opposition. Maybe, just maybe their fine defense will get some national ranking soon. They go against Kansas and Kentucky and two wins, more than anyone might dream, would make them a team of note everywhere. At this time the extent of the Steve Downing injury is unknown and it would seem almost impossible to rate us as likely to win either against Kansas or Kentucky if Steve is out. When Steve is out Joby goes like gangbusters tho fouls would hurt. Downing is on the verge of greatness and you will know more about his injury when you are reading this. We came up with outside shooting in the second half after missing 12 of 13 good shots and follow ups. It was Frank Wilson who missed one and popped four straight after Miami had narrowed the gap to one. In the first half Steve Downing flashed, John Ritter was steady and The Wizard did what be does best — passed and handled the ball. Bootsie can also shoot but his great value is his passing. Joby was playing a fair game when Downing went out but he came to life with a bang. Miami thought his defense was goal tending but it wasn’t. Mermering is neither smooth nor flashy but he is physical, a hustler, works hard and helps our bench. Rick Ford shows great desire and is one of the best 6th man ballplayers around. If Downing is out we are only 8 deep. 9 men on a college squad is strange and 8 seems unbelievable. The question is, do you win? It was said Saturday — would you rather win 60 to 50 or 65 to 50 or lose 107 to 104. The fans are beginning to appreciate our new style and the quality of our defense and passing. It means

fewer ulcers, more wins, and Bob Knight will be around for a long time. Football: Who will replace our offensive tackles next fall? Keith Morran played everywhere last year and ended up doing a great job on a tough defence in the Purdue game. The tackle play in that game was one of the big factors. Tom Bove was in and out but was our starter throughout the season. I pick Dave Spungeon, starter 7 times, and Bill Geiger a former defensive tackle, to do the job but if they don’t they will give way to the likes of Joe Sweeney from Fort Wayne, Rich Goyer the junior collegian from Delphi or one of a host of freshmen waiting for a chance.
