Wawasee Wrestlers Set To Defend NIC Championship
The wrestling Warriors of Wawasee high school are set to defend their Northern Lakes Conference championship this year behind the leadership of coach Terry Frank and assistant coach Ken Jordan. Wrestling is a growing sport in Warnorland and the ability of the Warriors is not to be underestimated as they could very well make this another championship year •' Adults and other Wawasee high school students in the area are urged to support the wrestling
Junior Varsity Wrestlers Win Over Lakeland The junior varsity wrestlers of Wawasee high school won over a visiting Lakeland team 34-17. Individual winners for Wawasee follow: 112 — Mark Vanlaningham 6-6 tie; 119 - Bill Butt 6-1, 126 — Dave Antu 5-1; 126 — John Gian pinned his man in 4:08; 132 — Doug Brown pinned his man in 1:26; 138 — Larry Stidham pinned his man in 4:16; 155 — Bob Bauman won in a draw; 167 — Mike Helman pinned his man in 1:17.

Knisley 156425 Prep Takes Season Opener Saturday night at the Syracuse junior high gym, Wawasee Prep won its season opener with a thrilling 78-75 overtime victory over Westview. It was a close game throughout with Wawasee Prep opening a 2012 first quarter lead: In the second quarter, the Lakers widened the lead to 12 points at 36-24, but West view battled back to taring the score to 36-31 at halftime. Throughout the third quarter, Westview continued to cut the gap, but Prep responded with throe quick baskets near the end of the quarter to lead, 54-47. Overtime The fourth quarter was a thriller with the lead changing hands many times. Finally, with three seconds left in the game, Prep grabbed a two-point lead at 71-69, but Westview hit a lay-up at the buzzer to send the game into overtime. In the overtime, Prep scored first and managed to hold the slim two-point margin until with two seconds left, Westview cut it to one point at 76-75. However, forward Otha Wallace iced the victory with two free throws. For the Lakers, Sylvester Allen was the leading scorer with 23 points and leading rebounder with 14. Wallace and Rick Mertz also finished in double figures for Prep, scoring 19 and 11 points, respectively. Gary Yoder of Westview was leading scorer for the game with 32 points.
