A dinner was held at a North Webster restaurant to celebrate the Efficient Homemakers Extension Homemakers club’s 25th anniversary. All 26 members were present. Seven past members also attended. They were Mrs. Robert Miller, Mrs. Verna Willits of Angola, Mrs. George Himes and Mrs. Leonard Mauzy of Warsaw, Mrs. Earl Teghtmeyer, Mrs. Hubert Robbins and Mrs. G. W. Stalter. Mrs. Sherman Deaton of Syracuse presented to the club the same lesson she had given 25 years ago. Lewis Richcreek received silver pins at the dinner meeting. Providing music for the meeting were Mrs. Marion Lantz, Mrs. Norbert Niles and Mrs. Paul Baugher. Reviewing highlights of past events were Mrs. Robert Miller, Mrs. Hubert Robbins, and a dialogue between Mrs. Hanna Payne and Mrs. H. A. Ganger. -NWCROP Kick-Off Banquet Held The annual CROP (Christian Rural Overseas Program) drive is on for Tippecanoe township. The banks of the county furnished a kick-off banquet for county CROP workers. Representatives from Tippecanoe township who attended were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Roose, Sr., Rev. and Mrs. Paul Shrider, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Bowser, Mrs. Marlene Wagoner, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Mock,.Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sponsellor and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barrett. Mrs. Barrett is the Tippecanoe township CROP chairman and Mr. Barrett is the county commodity manager. John Metzler, Jr., of Nappanee was the speaker for the meeting held at the Shrine building. CROP offerings will be taken in the three town churches before December 1. Boxes for offerings have been placed in businesses over the township. Money will go toward providing supplies, tools, seeds and high protein foods for starving people overseas. (Grain will also be accepted.) The county CROP chairman is Russell Creighton. —NW— Hi Neighbors Christmas Party December 16 Approximately 45 attended the Hi Neighbors Thanksgiving carry-in supper and auction. Hostesses for the supper were Mrs. Jerry Grady. Mrs. Bernard Roberts and Mrs. Robert Busch. At the regular meeting of the club on Thursday, 11 adults and three children were present. The meeting was opened with the Lord’s Prayer and two songs. Mrs. Galen Haney gave meditations. Under discussion were the Christmas party to be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Grady, plans to have a new roof put on the club’s meeting place and new club books. Instead of exchanging gifts at Christmas, the club has decided to have each member donate to the treasury to fund the new roof project. Mrs. Eldon Clayton and Mrs. Donald Ferverda served pumpkin pie with whipped cream, nuts, mints and coffee. —NW— Officer Meeting Held Recently Six officers of the Room 4-U 4-H club met at the home of Mrs. Ronald Greider recently. They made covers for meeting books and discussed project books. Refreshments of brownies and punch were served. A Christmas party and gift exchange will be held at the home of Mrs. Gil Baumlee, next month. -NW— Class Sponsors Fashion Show The Homebuilders class of the North Webster Church of the Brethren sponsored a fashions party recently. Among models for the style show were: Mrs. Blaine Shock, Mrs. Nancy Cable, Miss Karen Rowe, Miss Kaye Rowe, Mrs. Curtis Richcreek, Mrs. Phil Mock, Miss Holly Barrett. Miss Mary Kiser. Mrs. Paul Shrider. Mrs. Merlin Cassell, Mrs. Paul Royer and Mrs. Preston Gregory. Mrs. Howard Kiser provided a vocal solo; Mrs. Merlin Cassell gave a reading; and Holly Barrett gave a piano solo. Coffee and cookies were served for refreshments. -NWWCTU Christmas Program December 9 The WCTU Christmas Program will be held December 9 at the home of Mrs. Mary Fidler. At that time, gifts for the Veterani hospital in Fort Wayne will be collected. -NW— Cub Scout News Den II has finished its project with candles; a new project will be selected at a den mother’s meeting. Five boys were present at a recent meeting. Mrs. Charles
Hougy furnished refreshments. Den 111 has begun working on Christmas presents for parents. Eight attended a recent meeting. John Weeks and John Locke led the pledge to the flag. Refreshments were brought by Jay Harreld. Den IV has also begun a Christmas project of gifts for parents. Seven attended the meeting for which Greg Flynn brought refreshments. Webelos finished their work on rope with a knot-tying race. These scouts will also begin a Christmas project. —NW— V Girl Scout News Cadet Troop 16 has received its flag from the American Legion Auxiliary and will be learning the proper method of folding it. The girls may have a slumber party sometime in the future. Twenty-three girls from Brownie Troop 101 and 29 from Junior Troop 156 went roller skating at a rink in Columbia City recently. Adult leaders and mothers who accompanied the group were Mrs. Norman Fariss, Mrs. Larry Keim, Mrs. Joi Diepert, Mrs. Larry Reed, Mrs. Gilbert Baumlee, Mrs. Rex Slusher and Mrs. Jerry Knafel. Brownie troops will be having investiture ceremonies soon. Girls must have attended four meetings and must know their scout promise. Mrs. Norman Fariss has asked anyone who has a Brownie uniform that they would like to donate for use may contact her. There are girls in her troop that will be needing them. Junior Troop 156 went bowling two weeks ago. Sunday a group of the girls entertained patients at the Pierceton nursing home with skits and homemade gifts. —NW— Auxiliary Prepares Christmas Gifts For State Schools The November 16 meeting was held at the Herbert Kuhn Post 253. Final plans were discussed for the annual Fall festival. Committees report that all items have been taken care of. Mrs. Elinore Enyeart gave reports on the second district meeting at Otterbein and on the Girls’ School at Indianapolis. Mrs. Georgia Cormican gave a report on veterans’ crafts; Mrs. Alton Kruger reported on the Lafayette Home; and Mrs. Virginia Schafer gave the report on the Boys’ School. Christmas boxes will be packed for servicemen and women overseas at the December 7 meeting. A wide range of new presents are needed to send to Boys’ and Girls’ state schools, also. Gift suggestions for boys are games, puzzles, handicrafts, sport equipment and models, and for girls are games, puzzles, hair care products, cosmetics and jewelry. General gifts might include ping-pong equipment, Christmas decorations and cards, stationery and stamps. Members of the Post or Unit will take gift directly to the schools. Cards have been sent to Mrs. Maude Angel at the Alfran nursing home and to Mrs. James Pearson in a Texas hospital. A plant is to be sent to Mrs. Harold Speigel. At this meeting, plans were made for a surprise birthday party at the Legion for Herman Adams, November 23. —NW— Hears Lesson On Convenience Foods Mrs. Eugene Coverstone was the hostess for the November meeting of the Backwater Friends Extension Homemaker’s club. There were 20 members and three guests present. The club president and hostess, Mrs. Coverstone, opened the meeting by leading the club creed and pledge to the U.S. flag. Mrs. Douglas Bowser gave a history of the song of the month, “When I Grow Too Old to Dream.” Members sang the song, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Roose, Sr. on the piano. Meditations were given by Mrs. Bert Rhodes on an article entitled, “Moments for Meditation.” Food poisoning was the health and safety topic, given by Mrs. Norman Rhodes. Mrs. Ralph Bennett made garden renarks on indoor gardening. There was a short citizenship lesson on the county census, given by Mrs. Robert Likens. Mrs. Harold Leach gave an interesting lesson entitled. “Giving Convenience Foods a Personal Touch.” Each member and guest present shared a suggestion of a meal centered around some convenience food. Roll call was answered with a secret pal Christmas gift idea. Mrs. Kenneth Moser read minutes from the last meeting. A treasurer’s report was given by Mrs. Ray Rupprecht. A report was given by the dub president on results of the club’s participation in the Christmas bazaar of November 12 and 13. It was decided that the club send a donation to the state hospital at
Fort Wayne for Christmas. A final report on Homemakers Conference was given by Mrs. Robert Roose, Sr., who attended. In closing, the club collect was led by Mrs. Howard Bemish. Co-hostess Mrs. Bert Rhodes assisted in serving refreshments of homemade candy, date-nut cake with whipped cream, nuts and mints, and coffee or tea. Mrs. Ray Rupprecht won the door prize. —NW— Church Os God News Men of the church met Thursday to begin the membership enrollment for 1972. The group has already attained the distinction of having the largest registered men’s group in the state. Three new members were elected to the executive council also at this meeting. The Women’s Missionary Society has begun collecting gifts to send to one of the mission stations for Christmas. Choir, operetta and cantata practices are becoming mere and more frequent. The “Main Street Creation” will present the musical program “Life” in the Lansing, Mich., area, December 4 and in Huntington, December 5. —NW— United Methodist Church News Members of the WSCS Mary Circle met and elected the following officers recently: Chairman — Mrs. Douglas Fightmaster Vice-chairman — Mrs. Jon Diepert Secretary-treasurer — Mrs. Verle Wilkie. A pledge service will be held at the December 9 meeting. Mrs. Robert Roose, Sr. will also share with the group the nature of her work. A ground breaking ceremony for the new parsonage was held following the second worship service on Sunday. Addresses may be sent to Mrs. Elinore Enyeart, Unit 253 box 28, North Webster, before December 7. —NW—COMMUNITY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Kuhn spent last Saturday and Sunday with Mrs. Kuhn’s daughter, Mrs. Audrey Harman, and family of Rudolph, Ohio. Phil Tucker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Tucker of r 1 Pierceton, is in Wichita, Kan., this week. He is to participate in the wedding of Miss Marcia Jones., and Dan Conkling of r 1 North Webster on November 27. Boy Scout Junior Leader Training Junior leader training was held at camp Pioneer Trails recently. Boy scouts from Elkhart, LaGrange and Kosciusko counties participated. They registered Saturday afternoon, set up their campsites, visited other troopsites and looked over the model troopsite. Saturday evening they attended the council campfire which included skits and singing and ended with a critique and a scoutmasters minute. Sunday morning after breakfast and church services the boys went to many different stations to learn how to teach each of the first and second class skills. Later that afternoon the troops were combined to compete in the rally (competition in the first and second class skills). Every unit from Kosciusko county placed in the competition. Part of the team that captured first place ribbons were troop 82 of Burket, sponsored by theVolunteer Fire Department and troop 17 Oswego, sponsored by the MidLakes Lions club. Taking second place ribbons were troop 15 Winona Lake, sponsored by the Winona Lake Lions and troop 59 Atwood, sponsored by the Atwood Lions club. Taking home third place ribbons were the boys of troop 75 Warsaw, sponsored by the Warsaw American Legion. Part of the fifth place team were members of the troop 28 from Syracuse, sponsored by the Syracuse Rotary club. Boy Scouts of America is a participating member of the United Fund. CARS COLLIDE Cars driven by Mary Jean Vanlaningham, 52, Milford, and Lester L. Johnston, 63, Warsaw, collided at the intersection of North Detroit and East Center streets in Warsaw Friday afternoon. There was no damage to Mrs. Vanlaningham’s car. Johnston’s car received $75 damage. City patrolman Sam Brown took the information which was reported in to the police station.
New Dance Club To Form For Lakeland A new dance club, the Lakeland Dance club, a non-profit organization for adults and young adults in the Lakeland area, is being formed and will start on Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Meeting place for the club will be the Syracuse junior high school gym. The club, a community educational and fun-a-rama event, will include beginners dance instructions in all forms of ballroom, square and couple ’ dancing under capable instructions of Robert and Helen Duesler.
