Christmas May Be A Lonely Time
LAFAYETTE — The holiday season causes some people to experience a sense of loneliness and emptiness, notes Dr Dama Wilms, extension human development specialist at Purdue university. Though the joyful sounds and signs of Christmastime usually generate a joyous response, you may find yourself or a loved one strangely depressed The holiday season may be especially hard on those alone. Feelings of sadness may be triggered by experiences from your past. Perhaps the season recalls past Christmases when your parents were present or the family was together You may find yourself mourning the times that are gone and the persons

with whom you shared happy times. It may also be the recall of unhappy episodes that occurred during the holidays. Jdaybe a family member died, a relationship failed or some dream or wish was destroyed. A family crisis during an emotionally loaded season like Christmas leaves a longremembered sadness. Depression may also arise from the little bit of child in you, points out Mrs. Wilms. You may wish that the promise of toys and packages that fill the heart of a child could still be realized in yours at Christmastime. We adults sometimes wish we could still believe in Santa. The “child” in us may want to go home again,
but home isn’t the same and neither are we. Some persons compensate to deny their feelings of depression. They go overboard acting jolly. They may eat and drink too much and buy extravagant gifts. Others may react with bouts of insomnia, sensitive feelings or physical ailments. Some work out their depression by emphasizing and contributing to the joy of children. “Christmas is for children,” they may say. Whether your holiday season is one of pleasure or a sad remembrance of Christmas past, understanding all the feelings it can raise may help you be more sensitive to others or kinder to yourself. Christmas Gifts Os Felt LAFAYETTE - A gift you have made yourself — the nicest thing to give a loved one. However, time often seems to be unavailable for such projects. This year why not make a garment of felt for that special child or teenager on your gift list? Felt is not only quick and easy to sew but has also returned to the fashion picture., points out Billie Ellsworth. Extension clothing and textile specialist at Purdue university. An added advantage is the relatively inexpensiveness of felt when you consider that it is usually 72 inches wide. Felt fashions offer opportunity for creativity. They may remind you of the embroidered felt jackets and appliqued flared skirts of the 50’s. Some of the recent designs include a floor length skirt appliqued with multicolored flowers and bees and a floor length apron skirt with embroidered ribbon bands outlining the hemline, waistband and bib front. Other possibilities include short flippy skirts with appliques, fringed ponchos and jumpers. When choosing a pattern for felt, remember that felt is created by the matting or felting together of fibers through the use of moisture, pressure and heat. It is not spun into yards and then knitted or woven. Consequently it is not a durable fabric. It tears easily under stress and should not be made into designs which fit snugly, cautions the specialist. Gored and flared skirts (either long or short), loosely fitted jumpers and jackets and ponchos would be good pattern choices. Since felt will not drape, it is not a good choice for unpressed pleats or gathers. The edges will not ravel or fray, consequently the fabric is quick and easy to sew. This allows you to cut the garment off at hem level without even hemming. Or if a hem is preferred for a more finished look, the hem edge can be glued under Ribbon trim and fringe must be stitched in place but appliques of contrasting colors of felt can simply be glued with fabric or white glue.

Call him Rudolph or call him Blitzen, here’s a reindeer centerpiece the children can make as quick as a Twink! All they need are five creme filled vanilla snack cakes for body and legs, a donut for the head, pretzels for antlers, a marshmallow tail and a cherry nose. Bamboo skewers and toothpicks keep the parts together. The baked goods will be too fresh to work with right from the Hostess package. Heating in the oven will make them firmer. You’ll need: 2*i package* (5 cakes) Hostes* Creme Filled Twinkies 1 large Hostess Donut Long bamboo skewers Toothpicks 1 Maraschino cherry 2 curled pretzels 1 large marshmallow Powdered sugar, optional Bake Twinkies and donut for 20 minutes in a 250’ oven,
Postal Authorities Say .... Mail Gift Packages Early
There’s one rule to followin mailing Christmas cards, letters and packages — the sooner you do it, the better. Observing post office deadlines helps avoid the disappointment of having your greetings and gifts arrive late. Postal authorities recommend that you have all packages and out-of-state letters and cards in the mail by December 10th. Local greeting cards should be out by December 15th. October 15th was the deadline for mailing packages to Viet Nam, but you can still send them there by air mail until December 10th. These recommended dates apply also to areas in the Far East. For Canada and Mexico,
bottom down on a baking sheet or foil. Twenty minutes more on their sides and Twinkies will be firm enough, but allow another 20 for the donut. Cut a small diagonal slice from the ends of four Twinkles so they can stand. These will be the legs. Skewer through the complete length, allowing one-inch of the skewer to come out at the top. Lean two Twinkies together for front legs and toothpick to hold. Do the same for the rear legs* Cut a V 4 inch slice from rim to center of donut. Insert curled pretzels for antlers and hold together with toothpicks. Attach cherry nose with half a toothpick. Attach donut head to the fifth Twinkle (the body) with toothpicks and attach on to the skewered legs. Marshmallow’ is toothpicked on as the tail. Sprinkle with powdered sugar for a snowy effect. 1 reindeer.
