Lakers End First Season Wawasee Prep’s first year as a full varsity team in the state of Indiana is now a part of the young school’s promising future and past efforts. The juniorsophomore dominated team defeated a respectable team from Laporte LaLumiere, 28-12. The Lakers end their first season with a respectable six wins and two losses. The games scoring went the way of many Prep games with Greg Anderson and Syl Allen leading the way. The young Prep interior linemen provided the holes in the line, but Anderson did the rest with the finest downfield running in the state. Prep’s all-sports junior standout, Sylvester Allen, hampered by a sore throwing arm, still connected with Anderson for two TD’£. Terry Bonds, Alien’s backup at QB, caught many of Alien's hard tosses. One of Bonds' receptions went for a TD that was called back by a costly penalty. Rod Martin, the fine halfback, and Rick Roberts at fullback, are the only seniors backs on the squad. Coach Phil Jones regrets the loss of Martin and Roberts, but should have two bigger backs returning, in Howie Witherspoon and Otha Wallace. Senior linemen that have had a fine year include Al Emery at TE, Tom Doyle at SE, Jeff Brown at guard and linebacker. Kevin Jans at DT, Tim Jehl at backup center and DT, and Mark Manning at guard. Emery has a future as a punter. The defensive play was steady during the contest but not outstanding and came in the second half with the ball on the one foot line and fourth down. Junior, Frank Hunckler, stood the play up at the line of scrimmage and Prep proceeded to work the ball up the field. Prep’s football team will add to its schedule for the 1972 season, such teams as Lafayette Harrison, Fort Wayne CC, Culver Military, and Gull Lake Michigan. Coach Phil Jones has confidence in his young but talented team. Chargers Destroy Kendallville; Complete Undefeated Season

The West Noble Junior high Chargers finished the best football season in their school’s history with seven wins, no losses, and no ties. The seventh consecutive victory was racked up last week against Kendallville by a score of 18-0. West Noble lost several scoring opportunities due to fumbles, with one occuring on the one-yard line. The entire game was played in a steady downpour. The Chargers did manage a 6-0 halftime lead on a 2-yard plunge late in the second quarter by a fired-up Rick Frye, playing perhaps his finest game of the

Michigan 61 - Indiana 7- A traumatic experience for the football team and myself as well as our fans. If Michigan isn’t the number one team in the country the other two should be in the Hall of Fame. It hurts to lose but at least our boys were scrapping. They were like trying to stop a tank with a popgun. The Michigan horses are just unbelievable. That is all that can be said about the game. This is a letter about the team and chiefly its personnel and personality. A few things to notice. McNulty had trouble getting away from center —too fast — this happens when everyone is lunging trying to do what they can physically do. 1 think McNulty has come a long way and can do the job at the quarterback slot. The rest of the team must now get it done. At the tailback position a boy by the name of Stu Odell is beginning to come around. He didn’t qualify for a scholarship his freshman year so he couldn’t play in the spring either. He keeps improving and will help us in big chunks in the next two years. He was clocked in 9.5 in

year both on offense and defense. The second half found Kendallville inside the Charger 30yard line on four different occasions. However, West Noble’s defense rose to the challenge and stopped all their attempts to score. Frye again got into the scoring act with a 7-yard ramble through Kendallville’s line early in the fourth quarter. The Charger’s rounded out their scoring when quarterback Mike Schultz and tight end Gayton Sensibaugh teamed up for a 48-yard TD pass with one second left on the clock. Ulis play, catching Kendallville

spring track workouts, put a high school shot 57 feet and is about 210. He just might be a tight end prospect next fall too. Our running back situation is better with Starling back but we are thin. Here is where the two freshman speedsters will help. Cremeens and DeCamilla are playing it on offense and Bill Atkinson from Gas City is a fine “scooter” who is being used to run back punts and play defense. Our defensive tackles are getting more and more beat up. A game like Michigan beats you physically also but two sophs who sparkled as freshmen are beginning to show. They are not physical giants but are quick, strong, and have lots of guts. They are Frank Piwarski and Mike Visnich, two Ohio boys. The freshmen got trounced but they are great in individual spots. They are more to be fitted into varsity needs than a balanced freshman team. They play the “Scout Team” for the varsity and don’t get a chance to be a team. It is rumored there will be 5 freshman games either next year or the next. We were missing three big defensive men in the middle

by complete surprise, enabled Sensibaugh to score his first touchdown of the season. This victory was especially meaningful to W.N. Last year Kendallville stopped the Chargers in their last game as they were seeking an undefeated season. Also, no Charger football team has ever defeated Kendallville. until their sound defeat this year. Coaches Jim McGellan and Dave Speakman, and the entire football team, expressed appreciation to the community for their fine support throughout the season.

and our super quarterback prospect, Willie Jones, from Memphis. He is now having some calcium deposit problems and coaches are praying. The basketball team is working. They can’t believe how hard Bob Knight works a team. Basketball Tickets On Sale Nov. 8 Wawasee high school basketball season tickets will go on sale November 8.
