Wawasee Defeats North Wood 22-14
By TED SPEICHER Wawasee Warriors put together a tremendous offensive and defensive effort Friday and came away with one of their biggest victones of the 1971 season, defeating a very strong North Wood squad 22-14 After gaining some good yardage on their first set of downs the Warriors fumbled on their 40 yard line, giving North Wood good field position. With the Warriors defense getting its first test of the evening, the boys rose to the occasion as the Warriors big defensive lineman Brian Mikel recovered a fumble on Nojth Wood's first offensive play The fumble recovery gave a second chance, which was the wrong thing to do Friday night. With Pat Spearman and Kim Cripe nipping off large gains through North Wood's line ttjr Warriors moved quickly into North Wood territory. A roughing the passer call against North Wood gave Wawasee the ball on the Panthers 16 yard line. With 4:41 left in the first quarter big Kim Cripe ripped nine yards right up the field for Wawasee’s first touchdown of the night. With the PAT failing Wawasee lead 60. A beautiful punt by Wawasee’s Dwight Dean downed on their two yard line by Steve Vanlaningham, coupled with an extremely strong Warrior defensive display, set up Tim

Blue's 39 yard touchdown strike ~TTBiII Leemon with 3:12 left in \jh* second quarter. Blue then found Tom Fribley for two more points making the score 14-0. The North Wood Panthers made a big effort to swing the momentum in their direction early in the third quarter. With North Wood calling on its star halfback Rick Fisher marched down field with him breaking into the clear, it looked as though he was on his way to paydirt, but five yards short of the goal line Wawasee’s Tom Fribley caught Fisher from behind causing a fumble which was recovered by an alert Dave VanLue. This great defensive play again preserved Wawasee’s 14-0 Iqad North Wood was"finally able to put its first points cm the board, with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter on a quarterback keeper. The PAT was broken up by Warrior Mike Vanlaningham who arrived at the quarterback the same time the ball did While the North Wood fans‘'were still cheering their bo&s first score, the ball was already heading toward Warrior receivers Bill Leemon and John Rhodes, who were setting the stage for what has to be the Warriors' biggest play of this season or any other. Leemon received the kick off, reversed his field and handed the ball to senior John Rhodes. Unable to find the handle at first, John had to bend down and scoop it out of the turf. Finally finding the handle on the 10 yard line Rhodes found a gapping hole opened up by the great Warrior

Nocking, hit the sidelines and outran the whole field for 90 yards for a stunning touchdown, which brought everyone, including the opposing fans, out of their seats. Tim Blue added two more points on a fine run, making the score 22-6. With John Rhodes’ touchdown run providing the extra fuel needed, the Warrior defense lead by VanLue and Mikel stopped North Wood on two net yards on their next set of downs. However, North Wood did muster another score later in the fourth quarter, with PAT successful. The Warriors offense did a good job kicking several key first downs and ran out the clock, the Warriors coming away the victors in a well earned ball game 22-14. The game was very well played by the Warriors, with the Warriors defensive unit playing its finest game of the season, coming up with key interception*, fumble recoveries and the big plays at the times when they were needed.
