Warriors Stop Manch With 24—13 Victory
Wawasee’s Warriors escaped with a 24-13 victory over an upset minded group of Manchester boys Friday in a game played at North Manchester. Wawasee provided the first scoring action of the game, which came with five minutes left in the first quarter. John Rhodes made a nice pass interception on Wawasee’s 20 yard line with Tim Blue taking over from there. On the first play after the interception. Tim rolled out to his right, looking for a receiver and finding none, moved behind some fine Mocking, finally breaking open around Wawasee’s 40 yard line and streaked the rest of the ■ way, 80 yards in all, for Wawasee’s first TD. The PAT failed and Wawasee lead 6-0. Neither team had much success in mounting a scoring threat until 7:30 left in the second quarter, with Blue connecting with John Rhodes for Wawasee’s second TD of the evening. The TD pass to Rhodes capped off an 80 yard march with Pat Spearman and Kim Cripe providing strong running for the Warriors. Just as it looked like the Warriors might turn the game into a rout, Manchester's quarterback Jerry Pottenger operating from the seldom seen (‘‘shotgun") formation, where the quarterback takes the snap from the center about eight or nine yards behind the line of scrimage in order to discourage strong pass rush. Pottenger gave Manchester a big spark of life when he hit Rich Day for an 11

yard TD, with the PAT failing. Manchester had cut Wawasee’s lead to six at halftime. The start of the third quarter saw Manchester recovering a fumble on the kickoff on the 36 yard line. Four short plays later a quarterback sneak by the Squires Dean Wendell tied the game. Day kicked the extra point and suddenly the Warriors found themselves behind. On the second play after the Manchester kick off Tim Blue hit senior speedster Pat Spearman with a swing pass on the left side lines,/ maneuvering beautifully Pat broke three Manchester tackles and finally broke clear about midfield. From that point on it was merely a foot race with Pat winning by a large margin. Pat’s touchdown run was without a doubt one of his finest individual preformances in the 1971 football season for the Warriors, covering 84 yards. With Pat’s touchdown providing the big lift the Warriors needed, they took control the rest of the way. Their last score came with 5:16 left in the last quarter, through the combined efforts of Kim Cripe, Spearman, Bill Leemon and Tim Blue the Warriors powered their way to Manchester’s six yard line. After a five yard penalty, Tim Blue again fired a touchdown strike to Tom Fribley. PAT failed, making the final score 24-13. Wawasee takes on a fine NorthWood squad Friday in the last home game of the season.

Medals To Honor Cromwell, Rockne Two beautiful medals have been issued by two societies that honor greats of the United' States and Britain. The Britannia Commemorative Society has issued a medal honoring Oliver Cromwell. The National Commemorative Society has an American in a completely different field, Knute Rockne. Oliver Cromwell dismissed Parliament by an order that was enforced by his soldiers. Cromwell was made lord protector of England, an office to be held for life and one which carried with it many powers once held only by kings. Cromwell reformed the courts, brought prosperity to the country, defeated Holland and Spain in war, but his rule by troops was very unpopular at home. Eventually he had to relax his military rule and summon a fresh Parliament. Cromwell died in 1658. Before long. Parliament was firmly on the road to achieving what he really wanted —a government

The PAT was scored on a nn by Mike Wollman. Randy Lewallen found an opening and scampered 60-yards for a T.D. on the second play of the game, and Rick Brannock added the points after. Mark Smith scored on an interception from 20-yards away and the Squires found themselves down 22-0 at the half. The Squires continued to run a shot-gun offense which never got started as the Warriors held them to only one-yard passing on 27 attempts. Wawasee went on to its own polecat offense and Smith scored

Northwestern 24 — Indiana 10. A revoltin development and more of the same. We get within one or two missed assignments of winning and boom. An underrated team said the Northwestern quarterback. The best 1-6 team I ever saw says the assistant coach but we still lost. We had them on the run after a “queer queer” call when our boys aroused, marched to a touchdown and then got to Ist and one on the four. A rollout called by the coach that looked like a pass option from the stands, but it was headed right until a lineman — our usually best one — missed a block and let the free safety through without* touching him. No one particular spot or thing is hurting us. We threw the first touchdown pass against the best pass defense in the country — in fact, the first one in three years that those deep defenders have allowed. We threw at them and made them like it. McNulty got credit for 215 yards passing and completed 75 more than were nullified by infractions —two of the three are known as “suspect” calls. The killer came when we intercepted and after the teams had changed fields one official called a penalty on the play — and Northwestern got the ball back. John Pont got his Ist “Technical” of his life. After this we were a great team until the goof on the 4 and we lost our zip again. It showed they can do it. Maybe we will yet. Michigan had better watch out — so we hope. We are playing good football even though some people only think of win — nothing else. I saw the freshmen at Northwestern which was a great I. U. job. Talked to one of the Northwestern freshman coaches and he was tremendously impressed

with our freshman personnel. The team cohesion flattened against Illinois and the offense gave up the football 11 times but Buddy Hornbeck is now the quarterback and he is slick. Thay say that Willie Jones is a “Heisman Trophy’’ candidate and Hornbeck may not be number one but the Northwestern coaches think Hornbeck the best they have seen and a fine Big Ten quarterback prospect. We are weak on punt return at the varsity level but Bill Atkinson from Gas City ran 4 punts. One for 6 yards, one for 25 yards, one for 70 yards and one for 75 yards. He really has it. One of the Northwestern defenders told me he was awful tough and also says that our wide receiver is the toughest boy to cover he has ever been on. This is his third freshman game and he played the toughest Illinois high school league.
