Behind The Farm Market Scenes
LAFAYETTE - Cash and futures prices of soybeans strengthened during the first half of October, while com quotations remained about steady, according to J. William Uhrig, Purdue University extension economist. Hog prices were steady to 25 cents higher at midwest markets, while choice steer prices dropped 50 cents. However, livestock prices generally were sharply higher than a year earlier, Uhrig notes. Increased acreage, less Wight damage than earlier expected and good growing weather throughout the Com Belt have combined to produce record 1971 com and soybean crops. Practically all of the news concerning the prospective demand for com was bearish during the first half of October, the economist explains. Although the soybean crop is expected to set a new record, carryover supplies are smaller. Thus, it would appear to be a tight supply-demand situation and prices will probably rise before the end of the marketing year, Uhrig says. Uhrig thinks a number of technical factors has prevented a bull market in soybeans from getting underway. He lists them as: The dock workers’ strike and that at Chicago terminal elevators; the current price level of more than $3 a bushel in Chicago cash markets; shortage of grain storage space at harvesttime; reduced processor margins and less buoyant demand for soybean products than earlier expected. 5 Farmers appear to be holding

larger than normal amounts of com and soybeans, Uhrig observes. Too a larger percentage of the com crop is eligible for government loan this year. The economist expects grain prices to rise after the harvest is completed. Chicago cash com sold at around sl.lO a bushel at midmonth, about 45 cents lower than a year ago. Cash soybeans were $3.13, about 18 cents a bushel higher than last fall. The gain in soybean prices in early October was supported by an increase of a cent a pound in oil prices. Hog prices reached $21.50 per hundredweight at several midwestern markets at mid-October; this was about $3 higher than last year. Hog producers are cutting back on sow forrowings and fewer hogs are expected to be marketed in late October than a year earlier. Choice steers at Omaha continued to trade around $32-$32.50. Wholesale beef prices declined $1 per hundredweight. Grade A large white eggs traded at 32 a 4 cents a dozen in Chicago wholesale markets at mid-month; this was 1% cents lower for the period. Major factor in the decline was larger seasonal supplies. Broilers were steady at 26.5 cents a pound wholesale. fe PAUL MARKLEY PLACES THIRD P?ul Markley, Jr., Milford, attended a licensed trial of beagle dogs at the Elkhart County Beagle club at Bristol Monday. Mr. Markley’s “Zeke” placed third out of 20 participants. They were judged on field work.
