The win was the fourth for the Lakers with only a defeat to eighth ranked Marian. Prep has played three of five games in pouring rain and slippery fields. The raiders only score came with five seconds remaining in the first half, when Gordon Miller kicked his second field goal of the year from 21-yards out. Prep’s defense continued its domination of the ball game. The first unit has not allowed a touchdown by rushing or passing for 10 quarters. Outstanding play from Ray Vanet with 13 tackles, Jeff Brown with seven and Mike Hurd and Frank Hunckler, brought the Raiders to the point of despair throughout the game. Al Emery, Prep’s fine punter, had a good night with an average of 40-yards until a blocked punt occurred in the fourth quarter.. Power Offensively, Prep’s speedy halfbacks, Greg Anderson, Rod Martin and Dick Roberts, provided the power in the second half. Martin opened the second half with a kick-off return of 80-yards with a fine block from Emery. Anderson, a junior and one of the top scores in the state, collected three touchdowns with some great running and pass receiving. Sylvester Allen, Prep’s quarterback, got on track in the second half and tossed two more touchdowns for the season Prep’s improvement in overall execution and attitude toward the game is most encouraging to all involved. Prep’s next varsity game is Saturday on their home field at 2:30 against New Buffalo, Mich. Prep’s Junior varsity team romped over a bigger Howe Military team 56-0 and the reserves played Jimtown Monday evening with Otha Wallace taking honors for 96 yards of rushing and three touchdowns. Wed., Oct. 13, 1971—THE MAIL-JOURNAL '
Enthusiastic—(Continued From Page 1) the remodeling at Milford and Syracuse while Lantz reported on the new construction at North Webster and Wawasee. Arnold stated the painting is nearing completion in the gym at Milford and repairs are being done on the gym floor. The bleacher work is scheduled for mid-October. The windows in the south end of the building have been covered with glass temporarily because of the weather. Work also continues in the hall and art room area. While this work is about 90 per cent complete the other work will be delayed until next summer since it can not be done while students are in the building. At Syracuse the elementary gym floor has been replaced and painting has been completed. Work continues on the storage area being built off the stage. The floor in the art room has also been replaced. The walls are up in the food storage area but workers are waiting for steel sheeting in order to complete the roof. The walls in the junior high gym have been painted. Two rooms have been made into one for the elementary library with the necessary repairs being made to floor, etc., where the wall was taken out. No work has been done as yet on the gym roof although the superintendent stated he would like to see it done before winter. Other work will have to wait until next summer. Mr. Lantz stated only the new addition had been started at North Webster. The remodeling is to be done later. He continued by saying he was pleased with the progress at Wawasee. The foundations are all in and 95 per cent of the floors have been poured while the [dumbing and electrical work has been roughed in. The workers are starting masonry work and are waiting for structural steel to arrive. The building should be closed in for winter work. The addition between the ag area and the kitchen has been closed in and is nearing completion. North Webster is not near as far along. Here 75 per cent of the foundation is in and 75 per center of the block work is up to grade level. Workers do not expect the structural steel until the last of October. Lantz stated workers at North Webster have a long way to go before the building is as far along as Wawasee. The weather will play a big factor as to whether or not it is closed in for winter work. The additional septic tank has been installed at North Webster and rough grading has been done over the area. It is hoped the finished grading can be completed and grass planted in the near future. Lantz reported the window area in the dressing rooms have been sealed off by the construction, creating a ventilation problem. Permanent ventilation can be installed in the girls’ dressing room but temporary ventilation will be necessary for the boys’ room. Following the reports those
present agreed the problems that are now being encountered are because of the untimely, expensive delay caused by the remonstrance. The contractors at North Webster stated there would have been no problem about enclosing the building there had they been able to start earlier. Board members questioned the superintendent and business manager about a report from Bart Wade, whom they expected to serve as clerk-of-the-works. Wade served in this capacity when Wawasee high school was constructed and proved very helpful with his daily construction checks. All board members agreed that the architects had stated they would have such a man on the scene. Arnold and Lantz stated they had been wondering where Wade had been and learned only Tuesday that he had retired and would not be on the job. Members of the architectural firm are personally checking the job once or twice each week. Board members expressed concern over the misunderstanding and asked the superintendent to set up a meeting with the architects. Arnold stated a meeting has been set for November 2. Board president Jerry Helvey stated he felt the architects should be made aware of the board’s concern and asked to step up on site inspection. Other Business In a number of informational reports presented to the board it was noted the official enrollment of the Lakeland schools is 3,055 which is up 45 students from the 3,010 enrollment of one year ago. Arnold stated adult education classes have started at Wawasee high school with il enrolled in machine shop and 17 in sewing. Request for approval of certificates of payments to be forwarded to Lakeland School Construction Company, Inc., were approved as follows: Ice Miller Donadio and Ryan, $6,762.54; Maurer, Van Ryn, Ogden and Natalie, $1,396; Delp Electric, Inc., $11,548.98; and Brown and Brown, Inc., $19,032.12. A request for approval of a change order to Delp Electric, Inc. for labor and material for temporary hookup of exhaust fans in locker rooms at North Webster, $113.00. This is to take care of the ventilation problem mentioned earlier by Lantz. Requests were also approved for payments from the school construction account as follows: Brown and Brown, Inc. for Wawasee, $4,933.08; The Huguenard Corporation for Milford, $11,149 and for Syracuse, $14,390. A GED test diploma was signed for Linda Lou Simon. She has completed all requirements and qualified for said diploma. Mr. Lantz requested and received permission to advertise for bids to be used by the junior high guidance departments and for replacement of musical instruments for all schools in the corporation. Request for school bus use by the Milford boy scouts for an overnight trip to Brown county later in the month was discussed and turned down. Board members decided they did not want to start letting buses out for overnight trips. LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wickersham of Barbee Lake were Sunday callers of Mrs. Eva Shipley of Farmland and Mrs. Hazel Wickersham of Winchester. Deaf Man Designs Tiny Hearing Aid Offers Free Model A remarkable tiny hearing aid has been perfected by a man who has been hard of hearing for nearly ten years.
