Patrick Vs. Heckner In Ligonier Fall Election
This fall’s Ligonier city election will find Grover H. Patrick (Di running against Howard G. Heckner (R) for the post of Mayor. Patrick is presently serving his second term on the city council. He owns and operates Pat’s Gulf Station and has been in the service station business in Ligonier for 15 years. He and his wife, Katie, have two children. He is a member of the Ligonier Masonic Lodge, past exalted ruler of the Ligonier Elks, member Scottish Rite, Shrine and American Legion. He served in the navy in W.W. II and in the army during the Korean conflict. Heckner has been practicing law in Ligonier for the past 10 years and served eight years as city attorney. He graduated from Valparaiso university and holds a B A. degree in government and a juris doctor in law. He resides at 505 Main St. with his wife and three children. He was a speech instructor at Valparaiso university and a manager of WKAM Radio. Goshen. He served with the U.S. Intelligence Corps in France (1955-57). He is a member of the Trinity Lutheran church, Ligonier Chamber of Commerce and Ligonier Industrial Development Corp. Clerk-Treasurer Mrs Ruth C. Miller is running a third term on the Democratic ticket for city clerk-treasurer She and her husband. reside in Park Meadow addition. Charles R Tapp <D> is a candidate for councilman from the first district He resides in the Stultz addition with his wife and one daughter He is an employee of Starcraft at Topeka. E. Lawrence Overmyer <R> is opposing Tapp He has been a resident of Ligoryer for the past ten years and is owner and operator of an auto body-repair business and also has an apartment on South Main St. Larry is serving as a member of the Ligonier city planning and zoning board and is secretary of the City Park Board He is past president of the Lions club and chairman of the Noble county Lions. He belongs to the Ligonier fire department. Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star. Scottish Rite. Mispah Shrine, Mispah Horse Patrol, Noble Co. Art Association and Eagles Lodge. He has three daughters. Buford Owens (D) 712 N. Cavin St., is seeking election as councilman from the second district. He has been a resident of the city for eight years and is employed at Monsanto as an engineering technician He is a graduate of t Knott county high school and attended Alice Lloyd junior college in Kentucky. He served two years in the U.S. Army, is married and has two daughters. Jack LeCount (R) 708 N. Cavin St., is also running for councilman of the second district. He is self employed in the plumbing and heating business and has been a resident for 32 years He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952, in Japan and Korea He is a member of the Ligonier American Legion. He and his wife have three sons. Clyde Davis (R> is running for councilman, third district. He is now serving his eighth year as city councilman He is a member of the Ligonier Elks, past president Rotary, past master Ligonier Masons, past patron Eastern Star, elder Ligonier Presbyterian church and a member of the Elks Lodge. He is associated with Lyon and Greenleaf Milling Co. in management, purchasing and sales Stacey H. Archer (D) is running for councilman third district. He owned and operated the Ligonier Monument Works for many years and sold the business about a year ago. He has been a resident of Ligonier for the past 40 years. He is a member of the United Methodist church, the Lions club. Eagles Lodge. Elks Lodge. Eastern Star and Masons. The Archers have one son now residing in Huntington.

HOWARD HECKNER The Einsiedels live in Park Meadow addition. Joe Glaser (R), local car dealer, is running for council-man-at-large. He and his wife, Cloha, have one son and three daughters. Joe served for eight years on the Perry township advisory board and is a member of the Ligonier industrial board. He is a director of the American State Bank, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Masons, Scottish Rite and Eagles Mayor John Golden (D) has filed for councilman-at-large and is in his 12th year in city government. He is now serving his eighth year as mayor of Ligonier. He is retiring to devote more time to his hardware business. He and his wife, Annabelle, have two daughters and one son. He is a member of the Ligonier United Methodist church, Ligonier Lions and Elks. The only unopposed candidate is Mrs. Ruth Miller.

CELEBRATES „ BIRTHDAY Mrs. Mae Hite recently celebrated her 91st birthday. Mrs. Tom Keagle and Mrs. Lucille Aspnall, nieces of Mrs. Hite, and their husbands, came from Battle Creek. Mich., to help her celebrate.
State 4-H Rabbit Queen From Ligonier Charisse Wolf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wolf, was recently chosen State 4-H Rabbit Queen. Charisse is a member of the Sparta Twp. Jolly Spartans club and exhibited Flemish Giants this year. She has been a 4-H member for the past six years. The contest was based on knowledge of American Rabbit - Breeders Association standards and an interview with the judges. Connie Stout Wins Scholarship Connie Stout, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Stout, r 3, was chosen as one of three winners of the SIOO 4-H Key Club Scholarship awards, at the Indiana State Fair. Connie is a member of the Perry Busy Bees 4-H club and has participated for eight years. She will be attending the Fort Wayne Campus of Indiana university working for a degree in psychology. Good Samaritan Ladies Meet Good Samaritan Ladies of the Centenary United Methodist church met at the church Monday at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Walter House gave the devotions and Mrs. John Todd gave a report on the district meeting for the Bashor Home Auxiliary. Members decided to have a card shower for six-year old Jimmy Wagoner who is a patient in Lutheran hospital, Fort Wayne. Jimmy sustained severe burns about six weeks ago when several children near his home were playing with matches. Superintendent « Entertains Employees Teachers and employees of the West Noble School Corporation were guests of superintendent and Mrs. Glen K. Longenbaugh at the school Sunday afternoon.

Around 160 teachers, employees and their guests attended. The group was entertained by Dave and Dale Thrush, former Huntington college students, with a half-hour program of folk singing. They were then conducted by West Noble high school principal James Shrock, Roger Schermerhorn and Marvey Sponhauer, on a tour of the new school building. Area Crusade To Be Held West Noble high school will be the scene of an area crusade sponsored by the churches of Ligonier, Cromwell, Kimmell, Wolf Lake, Topeka and surrounding area.. The crusade will oegin November 7 and will continue through November 14. Ross Rhoads of Valley Forge, Pa., will be the speaker for the week-long series of meetings. He is a versatile speaker, having traveled all over the world. There will be a kick-off supper at the Cromwell school cafeteria, Monday evening, Sept. 27, at 6:30. This is a pot-luck supper with coffee furnished. If it is impossible to get there for the supper residents of the area are invited to come to the cafetorium at 7:30 to hear Mr. Rhoads. Everett W. Hanshew Everett W. Hanshew, 86, of r 1, Ligonier, died at the residence Sunday after an illness of one year. Mr. Hanshew, a retired farmer, was born in Noble county and had resided in Elkhart county and the Ligonier area. He was married November 5, 1910 to Sabina Long who survives. Also surviving are a son, Elmer, of Topeka, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. A sister, Mrs. Laura Pappas, lives in Three Rivers, Mich. Services were held yesterday (Tuesday) in a funeral home at Ligonier. Burial was in Eden cemetery. COMMUNITY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Bangs had as their Sunday dinner guests

Mike Ethridge, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Ethridge, had surgery in Lutheran hospital, Fort Wayne, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hite spent last week end with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Schukel, at Battle Creek, Mich. A bridal shower was held for Mrs. Larry LeCount recently, at the home of Mrs. Herbert LeCount with Mrs. David Ethridge and Mrs. Ted Sexton as hostesses. Mrs. LeCount was the former Brenda Ritter. Mrs. Edith Woods, a former Ligonier resident, underwent major surgery in Lutheran hospital. Fort Wayne. This months paintings at the Ligonier library are “The Old Pump” by Larry Overmyer and “Retired” by Jean Miller. The paintings are loaned each month through the Noble County Art Association. The scouts departed from Syracuse at 8 a.m. on Saturday and put into the Saint Joseph River near Colon. Mich. The three-day trip was fun and effort packed (the effort partially consumed in getting off rocks.

sandbars, stumps, and keeping the crazy canoe on a straight course.) Rains added to the misfortunate part of the trip. We battled 20 m.p.h. winds (that takes care of some more effort) on the lakes above the dams. We portaged around two dams, both had very rough portages (that takes care of the rest of the effort.) Sunday night, it rained all night. Most of the guys were, twisted around like pretzels dodging drips or catching them with cups, plates and plastic bags.l know my ground cloth was propped up so that the river that was coming through the side of the tent, wouldn’t get my sleeping bag all wet. We did not make it to our destination, which was back to Bristol. Instead we pulled out above the dam at Constantine, Mich. Although it was a hard, tiring trip, the boys and their fathers who participated, had a wonderful experience, and express appreciation to. our

SLOOO In Damages In Two-Car Crash Damages were given at SI,OOO in a two-car accident Monday night, Sept. 13, as autos driven by Grace L. Johnson, 77, of r 3 Syracuse, and Bob Rose, 68, r 2 South Whitley, collided at the intersection of SR 14 and SR 13 approximately two miles south of Sidney. The Johnson auto was headed north on SR 13 and the Rose car was headed east on 14 at the time of the mishap. Deputy sheriff Roger Fellows investigated and listed damage at SBOO to the Johnson auto and S2OO to the Rose vehicle. Mrs. Carmalene Losee of Elkhart is employed in the home of Mrs. Mace Hollar of Milford.
