INDIANA 26 KENTUCKY 8. What a feeling. LU. has been looking for a win about as long as the country has needed a good five-cent cigar. We really wanted this one and went out to get it without flair. We did it on the ground and were willing to let the opponents know it. There was a completed pass, that I recall was the first of the game, and it came in the 4th quarter. Very few thrown for reasons: 1. We were more physical and thought that we could win late if we wore them out. 2. We have some great runners. 3. We were in front. 4. The defense was fine fine fine. Pierre, the Hoosier Hotshot of the 70s and his 147 yards was something. Note he blocks, runs pass patterns and played all but one series of downs. Some ballplayer. The performance of two walkon defensive newcomers was a big factor when our “big name” defensive aces Larry Morwick and Mike Fulk left the scene. Bill Pipp was burned on the first play but came back to play well and Jeff Barnett from North Manchester held his own in the middle. Pipp did not get to play high school football. Two other walk-ons in the lineup helped but theirs is for another week. When Pont had closed sessions on Thursday “so they could get away from the crowd he was, as my little girl used to say “just spooferin.” He changed our basic pattern. He put Scolnik wide as well as the split end. They were decoys most of the game but it
split the defense and let our backs run. He put St. Pierre and either Hoffman or Porter as halfbacks. We then ran right at them with the blocker and runner going with the first step of the linebacker and the runner sliding into the holes and St. Pierre is great at this as is Hoffman and Porter’s speed and hard running was marvelous to see. Scolnik came up with a great catch when Brown got outside the pass rush and Scolnik found daylight in a broken pattern. Chris Gartner had a sore leg muscle and set a field goal record but was disappointed he couldn’t kick the kick-off deep into the end zone — and high. Maybe we ought to pound his leg every week and keep the 4 field goals. The freshmen play the J.V. team Friday, October 1. 2:00 if you can make it. The freshmen have some great prospects. At many times the offense had only 3 seniors in the lineup and the defense only 2. On offense — Brown. Bove, Harvey and on defense Thompson and Debbout. LEVI CHUPPS HAVE VISITORS Mr. and Mrs. Levi Chupp, Milford, have as their guests, their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Leßlanc. Mr. Leßlanc was recently discharged from the service. Wawasee Prep Victorious Over Glenwood Saturday
With a steady rain throughout the game, Wawasee Prep’s football team plunged, passed and out manned a young but eager Glenwood team in Glenwood, Hl., this past Saturday. It was the second victory without a defeat for the varsity football team from Syracuse. For Glenwood, it was their second defeat of the year. Prep’s defense allowed a minus 46-yards on the ground, and 11yards thru the air. Defensive standouts included Crit Witherspoon with three solo tackles on the quarterback, an t intercepted pass, and a blocked punt that was run in for a TD by tackle Kevin Jans. Tough defense by Ray Vanett, Jack Pain, Rick Roberts and Jeff Brown provided the offense with many scoring opportunities and good field position. The offense continues to improve with experience. Although inconsistency in execution bothers the coaching staff headed by Phil Jones, assistants. Vince Romeo, Mike Carey and Bob Mandemach, continues to work on individual efforts and

assignments. The offense amassed 370 yards total offense, 250 yards on the ground and 120 thru the The signal calling of Syl Allen and Terry Bonds, the running of halfbacks Greg Anderson (165 yards), Rod Martin (70 yards), fullback Howard Witherspoon (45 yards), receivers Emery, Wallace, Hershberger, Doyle, and Eppers, provided Prep with a good offensive punch. Prep will have to improve in overall execution as they prepare for their game at Tupper Field in Mishawaka against a fine team from Marian High at 7:30 p.m. Aside from the expected aches from the previous week. Prep is healthy. The return of Tim McGuire and Frank Hunckler to the line will give the Lakers added experience.
