Redskins 12 - Warriors 8 In Home Operner Friday

By TED SPEICHER With spirit high, weather right and the fans ready, Friday night at Warrior stadium saw the boys in green and gold give a highly rated Goshen squad as tough a football contest as one will find on any turf The spirit at Warrior field was a very high pitch Friday, considering it had been only a short time ago Wawasee lost its first conference game .to Rochester. The Goshen Redskins, a very physical team, had a very balanced a tuck of running and passing. Only one week prior to Friday's game, Goshen held Elkhart, the number (Mie ranked team in the state, scoreless for more than half their game. Goshen threatened early in the first quarter as the Redskins marched down field with a very balanced running and passing atuck. A 15-yard penalty against Wawasee gave Goshen a first down on its 15 yard line. On the next play with 6:20 left in the first quarter Dave Van Lue recovered a fumble, turning the ball over the the Warriors. The fumble looked as though it gave the green and gold new life as Pat Spearman ripped off tackle for five and Kim Cripe did the job as he picked up the first down. The momentary drive was short lived though, as a run for no gain and a pass to Tom Fribley was incomplete resulting in a punting situation on fourth and eight With 3:54 left Goshen took otfer on Wawasee’s 42 yard line. A devastating blow came to the Warriors as they were called on a thin pass interference, putting the ball on Wawasee’s door step.

The Warrior's defense held Goshen for no gain on the first two downs, then lightning struck as Goshen's Bruce Baker connected with Mike Myers for the touchdown. The kick for the extra point was wide and Goshen lead 6-0. The Warriors returned the kick off to the 46 yard line, being unable to establish any offensive threat the Warriors were forced to punt. Goshen took over on its own 31 fa rd line and promptly marched downfield, The Redskins were knocking at the door, on a run to the 13 yard line by their fine running back Tim Kosnoff. Goshen's excitement soon faded into a volley of cheers as Wawasee’s Dan Mosier intercepted the ball in the end zone, putting an abrupt end to Goshen's plans. The remaining time in the first half saw Wawasee’s offense unable to move and Goshen’s offense moving well at times. Outstanding defensive plays on Wawasee’s part kept the Warriors within striking distance. A pass interception byTim Blue with 3:28 left in the second quarter ended Goshen’s last threat to score in the first half. The early minutes of the third quarter again saw Goshen gaining yardage but unable to score. Then with 6:10 left in the third quarter the Warrior's offensive unit finally lit the fuse on the powder keg. It started burning slow with Mike Vanlaningham returning a Goshen punt to the 18 yard line. On first and 10 Tim Blue ran for one yard gain. Then an incomplete pass to Tom Hall made it three and nine. On three and nine Blue hit Bill Leemon right up the middle for 20 yards and a first down. With Wawasee’s offensive line giving Blue great protection, he connected with big Tom Fribley for two consecutive first downs, setting the stage for Bill Leemon’s beautiful 27-yard pass reception completing an 88-yard touchdown drive. With 3:51 left in the third quarter Blue ran around end for two more points and for the first time, the lead in the game 8-6. Unfortunately, Goshen came right back at the Warriors, with fast moving ground attack with 1:06 left in the third quarter. Tim Kosnoff s 35-yard touchdown run

gave Goshen the lead for good in only five short plays. The Warriors only other attempt to score ended on Goshen’s 35 yard line with a 15 'yard penalty for offensive holding snuffing out their last real threat.
