Wawasee Is Victor W’’ Over West Noble
By TED SPEICHER The Warriors received the opening kick off of the 1971 season last Friday night as they met West Noble in a game where the adrenalin of both teams flowed fast and wild, making it look more like an intersquad* practice session. / The game was played on mF' Warriors home field, although they were the visiting team, due to the fact the new West Noble field is not as yet completed. The Warriors offensive moved well at times with Pat Spearman looking good, on the run. picking up several first downs. With neither team being able to put together a drive, the<irst quarter ended on a dull note, with the smaller West Noble team having a slight edge Action began very rapidly in the second quarter with Wawasee taking over on their own 40 yard line. On two consecutive runs Kim Cripe picked up a total of 17 yards. A W HS first A piling on violation moved the ball to Wawasee's 13 yard line thus setting the stage for a first in Wawasee s football history On four and two Wawasee’s Kim Cripe split the uprights from 12 yards out for Wawasee s first field goal - From that moment on Wawasee took charge of the game The defense stopped West Noble cold and forced them to punt. The Warriors Mike Klenke, behind a fine block frohi Dan Mosier, returned the ball to Wawasee's 46 yard line. On the first play Kim Cripe took the hand off from quarterback Tim Blue, and broke over center, untouched for a beautiful 46-yard touchdown run. Electing to go for two points. Kim Cripe again ran over West Noble’s line making the score 11-0 with four minutes, 21 seconds left before

halflime. Wawasee then kicked off to a shocked West Noble team, with Jay Jones stopping the run back on the 35 yard line. Wawasee’s defense led by a very talented sophomore, Mike Vanlaningham. stopped the Chargers on downs. With two minutes, 10 seconds left before halftime. Tim Blue behind some fine blocking from his offense line, unleashed an aerial attack second to none, hitting Tom Fribley for 20 yards. Tom was hit hard causing a fumble, but Dan Chamberlin recovered the ball, keeping the drive alive Tim again found big Tom Fribley open for a first down on the 12 yard line with one minute, 17 seconds left. Going for a TD pass Tom Hall made a nice catch one yard short of paydirt. With 27 seconds left in the half Wawasee’s front line gave Tim Blue enough room to put six more points on the board from one yard out. Kim Cnpe again got the call and took the ball over for two more points with the half ending in Wawasee’s favor 19-0. The second half saw the Warriors kicking off to the chargers The Chargers recipient broke loose and was finally
stopped by Mike Vanlaningham, saving a possible touchdown. The Wawasee Warriors defense held West Noble on downs. A fumble by Wawasee gave West Noble possession of the ball. Wawasee's defease dug in and held West fourth and five situation. An offside penalty

gave the Chargers a first down. With a spark of life the Charger quarterbacks Doug Rex and Dave Vanette both hit on pass {days to Kevin Prestem which put the ball on the one foot line on the third down. Doug Rex pushed the ball over. With the extra point attempt failing, the score was now 19-6. Following the touchdown Wawasee quickly went back into action. With Tim Blue connecting with Mike Klenke and Tom Fribley on successive passes which put the ball on the third yard line. Kim Cripe again got the call and responded by ripping off three yards through the middle for the final touchdown. The extra point attempt failed making the score 25-6. The Warriors showed signs of outstanding ability in many instances during the game. The football season is here and the I.U. number one unit is reportedly set at all positions, except for possible injuries. There are a few “dinger” fights for position that should be mentioned for they are so close that they could shift before the opener. On offense all seems set for the opener except the split end. Qiarlie Byrnes was number one there every game last year but appears to me to be number 3 while Terry Woodburn is running first and Alan Dick looks (to me) like he could take over before the season is over. The halfbacks are Starling (Negro lad from Chattanooga), Rick Hoffman, All-Stater from Kentucky, and Steve Porter in a tie for the two positions. Starling is quickest, Hoffman has best moves and Porter blocks best — take your choice. Tight end appears to be Keith Morran and Greg Harvey in a tie. Morran blocks best, Harvey catches best. Bill Armstrong, the soph, shows promise but a little green. I pick Moran to start and Harvey to be the man before the season goes too far. The offensive tackles are set but they will have to be more consistant or soph George Heaton and Junior Bill Geiger will move in by October. Ken St. Pierre is certain at fullback, the center and guards are outstanding and Greg Brown is the quarterback but Ted McNulty came back such a surprise that Greg doesn’t dare get hurt or slip a gear. Maybe Pont announced Greg as the man and the only man just to help shape McNulty. If so he did a great job on the McNulty mentality. On defense: The big battle is at defensive end where John Debbout and Marshall McCullough are waging a ripsnorter. Debbout has been a letterman for two years but McCullough is a good one. McCullough needs more experience from Junior College. Debbout will start but come October — who knows. I have always been a Debbout man but McCullough is awful tough. The only other real good battle is at safety where smart, intelligent, high calibre boy Mike Heizman is running first but sensational Mel Wright, a soph is giving him fits. I take Heizman for his smarts and steady play. There are good boys pushing the number Mies at other positions and the coaches will be

working on the number two units pretty hard for you always need them. My prediction: If we can win at Minneota don’t be surprised if we get to 8-3. 6-5 is a good probability and everyone thinks 4-7 would be good coaching. Our mentality is up and we need a win at Minnesota to give us the confidence so necessary. Triple Duel XX Meet Held Tuesday P.M.
