Coach Storey's Warriors Score 8 To Win Annual Jamboree

By TED SPEICHER What looks to be a very promising season fdr yoach Don Storey’s Warriors was kicked off Friday, Aug. 27, when Wawasee joined North Wood, lakeland and Plymouth for a pre-season Jamboree on the Nappanee field. Wawasee and Lakeland started the action. The first few minutes saw Lakeland stopping Wawasee’s running game Finally, after failing to gam any on the ground, the Wawasee fans saw Tim Blue throw and complete his first pass of the year; to big and talented Tom Fribley. After forcing the Warriors to punt, the defense went into action for the first time The Warriors defensive line (being 30 pounds lighter per man

than last year) lead by big Kim Cripe, stopped Lakeland cold. The Warriors had control most of the quarter. Capping off a 90 yard drive Wawasee finally hit pay dirt with a 10 yard pass from Blue to Fribley. Electing to go for the two point conversion Blue again found big Tom Fribley rambling in the end zone for two more points. With 54 seconds remaining on the clock, Wawasee’s quick moving defense put a stop to Lakeland with the quarter ending in Wawasee’s favor — 8-0. The second quarter saw a tough North Wood squad scoring quickly on Plymouth. Plymouth, not looking as strong as previous years, could not get a threat going and the quarter ended in North Wood s favor — 6-0. After a short halftime Wawasee was matched against the revenged minded North Wood. North Wood, remembering a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Warriors last year moved quickly after the kick-off. With a strong passing and running attack. Again it was Tim Blue, only this time starting on defense. Tim stopped a North Wood threat with a beautiful pass interception on North Woods 30 yard line, returning it 40 yards. The interception gave Wawasee new life. Hard running Kim Cripe ran for the first down, with Blue and Fribley working their passing attack well. Once again it looked like pay dirt, but a proud North Wood defense wouldn’t hear of it. Penetrating Wawasee’s offensive line, the big North Wood defensive men hit Tim Blue for two consecutive losses behind the line, the last one causing a fumble' Getting late in the quarter it was up to Wawasees defense. Led by 196 pound Kim Cripe the defense held in Northwood’s

territory as time ran out resulting in a scoreless tie. By all indications Wawasee is off to another fine season. Well coached and backed up with fine desire, of very sportsman-like young men. The new conference will be known as the Midland Athletic Conference. During the 1971-72 school year, conference play will be limited to basketball, with the hope that conference activity will be extended to other sports in the near

game, but due to the fact that West Noble’s field is incomplete at this time the game has been moved to Wawasee. This is the first regular season game for both clubs.

The football team did their mile runs and their 40 yard sprints last Tuesday. There were some random thoughts about the team and the individuals that struck me. I The fastest 40 was a tie between Dan Lintner, from our conference champ track team and Mel Avereitt, the JC transferee. Avereitt had a slight muscle pull and did a 4.5 and has done a 4.3 while 4.7 is a “good halfback” speed. Steve Porter had a 4.55 and that is a fast back. Stu Odell, who did not play as a freshman, but who is looked upon as a good prospect was also in there at good halfback speed and is listed at No. 2 fullback. Rob Decker did not return. Why I do not know but he should have been a strong contender in the three deep position at fullback. Now it is all sophomores there. Greg Harvey is there in spite of a “kid style” brawl with the cops. It might be a big lesson and the shot in the arm it takes to make a good one. If he had not been a football player it would not have been as big a story. Marshall McCullough showed his amazing speed for his 238 size. 4.8 is mighty quick at this size. Dan Grossman did the mile in 6.50 only 4 weeks after a knee operation and in a football suit. Pretty good and good news for we need him at the outside linebacker corps. Bill Pipp has put on enough' weight that he might be a big big surprise. He was the top man on the squad in the mile at 215. Doug Bailey’s little brother Marc will come in better prepared to run the mile next year if his stomach cramps are any indication. It is no fun but a good lesson. He is a tough one and not apt to stay in the background long. Our two big big boys who were to come in slim are in good shape. Barszilauskas at 6 ft. 7 was to report in “slim”. He is “down” to 274. On the other side big Tim Roberson weighed 350 last Xmas and came in at 290. He was to aim at 285 but he looked trim at 290 and I was amazed at the way his knee seems to have responded. I like our defensive tackle corps even though Stu Williams did not think it was worth it and quit. Stu

should reconsider for he should be up there. We still have Taylor, from the JC corps to round out 4 fine tackles and Tabaka who was a starter last year at No. 5 plus two sophs. Week End Play At Wawasee Week end play at the Wawasee golf course saw the team of Joe Schidel, Paul Kizer, Rosemary Bumhart and Charlott Knisley win the Saturday scramble with a one under par 35. In second place in the scramble was the team of Merill Postma, Howard Cripe, Bernice Miller and Doris Schidel. They had an even par 36. Bob Funirlo and Howard Kerlin won Saturday’s blind bogie with 75 while Pete Fall won the play on Sunday with 80. LAKELAND LOCAL Misses Edith and Joan Streitmatter of Rensselaer attended Apostolic Christian youth day at Camp Alexander Mack Sunday. They are former Milford residents.
