<: facts about £ I ‘OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind.
By JERI SEELY With the opening of school today we thought we would bring back a' memory or two and see how many of Our Town’s residents remember this school. It is another of the photos given to us by Joe Closson of Elkhart. It was in 1878 that Milford's school was graded And. through the untiring efforts of superintendent James Shepard a commission was received in 1911. The school served the town well until the present junior high was built in 1914 and Milford’s 12 classes moved into the new building. Looking at an old Milford Mail from January 16. 1919 we found Esther Hurd elected as president of the Sisterhood of Mary and Martha She served for six months as did vice president Irene Lentz, secretary Melba Method, assistant secretary Helen Benson, treasurer Mildred Grove and pianist Mary Helen Potter Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Coy qf Michigan City has written to Milford friends stating the golden wedding anniversary celebration held in their honor August 22 was lovely. About 75 guests attended. Mrs Coy is the former Gladys Hart ter, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs Jacob Hartter of Milford The couple is quite well known here, having spent their summers at Waubee Lake for several years. We add our congratulations! Congratulations also go to Mr and Mrs Sam Hartter of near Our Town. The Hartters celebrated their 63d wedding anniversary on Sunday. Aug 29, with a family dinner in an area restaurant. They were married on August 26. 1908. Mr. Hartter also celebrated his 86th birthday this week so to him we give added congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haney of out Hastings way have returned to their home after a IS-day visit to Morehead and Georgetown. Minn., where they visited with friends and Mr. Haney enjoyed fishing. They reported bumper crops of wheat (45 bushel per acre), barley (75 bushel per acre), and oates (about 100 bushel per acre). Sugar beets and sun flowers also looked good but the bean crop there will be short because of the lack of rain.

Revise Gas Rate Schedules Northern Indiana Public Service Company today filed new gas rate schedules with the Public Service Commission of Indiana which include minor adjustments designed to •‘track" increased rates of pipeline suppliers which have been approved by the Federal Power Commission. "The petition was submitted with the understanding that no increase is sought during the 90 days while prices are frozen under the Economic Stabilization Act of 1970," Dean H. Mitchell, NIPSCO chairman and chief executive officer, noted. NIPSCO’s filing is in accordance with the procedure outlined by the chairman of the Public Service Commission of Indiana on August 20. 1971, and an order of the Commission issued December 11. 1970.authorizing gas distribution utilities in Indiana to recover increases in the cost of gas purchased from pipeline suppliers. when such increases have already been approved by the Federal Power Commission, by filing revised rate schedules with the PSCI for approval within 30 days after filing The NIPSCO adjustments, which would not become effective until the 90-day wage-price freeze is over, will result in an increase to the average residential nonspace heating customer of approximately 10 cents per year and for the average residential space heating customer of about 37 cents per year. "Even after this modest increase becomes effective." Mitchell said, “it will cost only $135 per year to heat the average Nipscoland home with natural gas compared to a cost of approximately S2OO per year with a fuel oil, $235 per year with coal and S2BO per year with propane " Escalade Staff Sponsoring Dance The Escalade staff of West Noble high school is sponsoring a dance on Saturday, Sept. 3, m the cafetorium of the new high school with music by The Ritual band The school doors will open at 8 p m for the dance scheduled to start at 8:30 through 11:30 and tickets can be purchased at the door.
