facts about ‘OUR TOWN’ | Milford, Ind. By JERI SEELY This photo of the interior of the third and fourth grade class room at Milford was given to us as were several others by Joe Closson of Elkhart, a former resident of Milford. We thank Mr. Closson and will be using the rest of his pictures in the weeks to come for those of you who enjoy, as we do. reviewing the history of Our Town Also included with the pictures were several old copies of The Milford Mail. The one we were looking through just prior to writing this column was dated January 23. 1919. According to the report of the county auditor that year Van Buren township was worth $2,174,060. Believe it or not. Turkey Creek township was only worth $2,038,325. Times have changed a slight bit wouldn’t you say! We also found a notice in the paper that the new Milford Carnegie library would open to the public on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 12 o'clock. Miss Theodora Merrick was librarian. Workmen on a construction project damaged a telephone cable near Warsaw on Thursday afternoon with 1,300 telephones in the Milford community being temporarily out of toll service. The cable, according to M. L. Hochstetler, district manager for United Telephone Co., of Indiana Inc., was repaired and toll service was restored to normal several hours later. We like the bank .. . don't you! It looks like it’s really going to add a lot to the community when completed. Don’t forget school starts next Wednesday morning. Students will report for a full day t .. They won’t have long, however, until their first vacation with Labor Day set for Monday, Sept. 6. Wow! Where has summer gone.
