Summer TIME FOR PLAY
Yes, summer time is a good time to attend a ski show in the Lakeland area and there will be no better chance than this coming Sunday when the Dewart Lake Skiers, the Wawa Skiers and the Ski Bees from North Webster team up to present a first in the state of Indiana. The Dewart Lake Skiers are sponsoring the three-way showtournament to be held at Redmond Park on Dewart Lake at 1 p.m. Each of the three clubs will give a 45-minute program with judging to be done according to American Water Ski Association rules Don Hoffman, a member of the Mishawaka Spray Riders club and a senior judge and councilman for the American Water Ski Association, will be chief judge of the event. Judging for the three clubs will be Nick Wade of the Ski Bees. Melissa Eninger of the Wawa Skiers and Barbara Miller of Dewart Lake. The fifth judge will be Tom Hoetger. a member of the Jumping Joes Ski club of Elkhart Judging will be on flow of act, skill of performance, difficulty of act. spectator appeal as well as efficient use of time, announcing, towing, adaptability to site, pickup boat crews and roping and equipment personnel. This is a trial show for the state of Indiana It’s a first in skiing and if successful will pave the way for an open tournament next year which will be co-sponsored by the state association Dew art Skiers The original Dewart Lake Ski

club was formed some 15 years ago by Bob Whet lock who is currently a member of the reorganized group The club died out and for about five years there was no club at the lake. About four years ago the Dewart Lake club was re-organized by Mr. and Mrs John L. Miller. It meets every other Sunday at 2 p.m. at Redmond park

Harley Chalk is president of the group with Don Bucher serving as vice president. Bobbie Gibbs is secretary and Lu Ann Yentes is treasurer. Among those skiing Sunday for this reporter were Lu Ann Yentes. Bobbie Gibbs. Misty Engle and Mary Ann Eden who did a beautiful job on a toe hold. This was followed by a performance by the mixed doubles composed of Harley Chalk. Kim Slocum. Lu Ann Yentes and Mary Ann Eden. The boys then took over to show us some jumps. There are about 30 members in the Dewart Lake ski club with the youngest being Shawna Sue Miller, daughter of the John L. Millers who was born on August 3. She slept peacefully in her carriage on her father s pontoon while this reporter photographed the skiiers. The youngest active member is five-year-old RandyNeil. The group has from to 10 intermediate skiiers. Four members. Bob Whitlock, Kim Slocum. Jerry Hickman and Don Bucher were in competition this summer. Ski Bees The number one skiing club in the state of Indiana is the North Webster Ski Bees They have held their state championship title for the past six years. Two girls from the Ski Bee club. Janie Peckenbaugh and Jan Wade competed in the national tournament in Ohio during the past week end. Both placed in the tournament. The Ski Bees were formed in 1957. This year ’s officers are Lee Clark, president; Mark Wiggs, vice president; Jan Clark treasurer; and Nancy Plummer, secretary. They present a ski show every other week at Socks Marina. Wawa Skiers Finishing second in the state tournament this year were the skiers from Wawasee. This group was formed last August by JerryThornburg, Rex Hile and Tom Crews. Thornburg is currently serving as president, Hile is vice president and Jackie Wortinger is secretary. They meet at Johnson s Bay on Lake Wawasee. t FLYING HIGH — This man from the Wawa Ski club was flying high last Sunday afternoon as hundreds of persons gathered on the shores of the lake to watch him fly. Members of the Wawa Ski club presented a show on Sunday and will join other Lakeland clubs on August 29 for a state first in skiing.

Turns are another enjoyable pait of the run if thev are executed well. Always avoid abrupt maneuvers. When turning, swing wide, especially if lhe skier is on the inside of the turn. Also, the driver, observer and 'kier should all acquaint themselves with state and focal regulations governing skiing. Mans areas have “sunrise to sunset" rules only. In general, however, the most important idea to keep in mind is to stay alert, lhe driver must always be looking out for any obstruction* or congestion in front of the boat Mans times the skier is executing turns or tricks anil does not see hazardous areas coming up. On Sunday they visited Millard Hentzell at the Veterans hospital in Marion.
