Tennis: A game played by two or four players on a specially marked, oblong court in which a ball is knocked back and forth over a net with a racket — Thorndike Barnhart Comprehensive Desk Dictionary. Tennis is fast becoming a popular sport in America and the Lakeland area. What was once taboo to the average American is now a sport enjoyed by rich and poor alike. As the years pass more and more people in the Lakeland area purchase a tennis racket and take up this active sport. It's a sport that both meh and women can enjoy and as the definition states either two or four persons can enjoy a lively game at any given time. During the past few weeks Wawasee high school tennis

Football analysis is about past for this summer - that is the varsity prospects except for one sad item. Dan Grossman has suffered a knee injury and has had an operation. The first estimate had him out this fall but it was not a ligament - cargilage damage and there is a chance he will return. Turning to basketball I would like to write about the two virtually unknown members of last year’s squad and how they will have to come through for us to be in the money this winter They are Kim Pemberton of Jac-Cen-Del (and don’t ask me where that is) and Jerry’ Mermering of Vincennes Kim Pemberton, a high school star basebailer as well as a basketball flash was the last tender given to this year’s juniors. As a freshman he was the big surprise as he led the team in shooting percentage. He was mildly a sensation during the freshman games. During the summer between his freshman and sophomore year he got too dose to the table too often and too far from the outdoor courts. As a

Manchester to meet the Squires the following night. On September 16 they will play host to Rochester. After a few days rest the Warriors will have another busy week as they meet North Wood on the 20th, La Ville on the 21st and Columbia City on the 22. Both September 27 and 29 are open. The sectional tourney is set for October 2 with the Warriors meeting Howe Military on October 5. The regional is October 9 with the season closing with the state tourney on October 16. >. All games with the exception of four will be played at 4 p.m. The Rochester, LaVille and Howe Military matches are set for 4:15 while the Columbia City match is at 4:30.

result, be reported 20 pounds ox erweight and spent most of the year getting into condition. It wasn’t until very late in the season that he got in the bailgame at all. This is a new season and Kim is too much of an athlete to let it happen again - we hope. Pemberton fits strongly in the depth charts. We must have some backup help at forward and he could be the answer. The loss of George McGinnis is a big one but not fatal if Kim Pemberton and Jerry Mermering can come through They have the advantage of the great attitude. They are fine boys and I think may show the I.U. fans a thing or two. Jerry Mermering played on the Vincennes state finalist team. He was the big center and a very good shooter. He was regarded by many as a step slow but potential. Jerry first entered LU. on a scholastic scholarship as he is a top student. During the freshman season he came along so much that he was given a basketball tender and in his sophomore year did some relief

ROUND ROBIN TOURNEY WINNERS — The three winners of the recent round robin tourney held on the Wawasee high school tennis courts are shown above. work. He seemed unsure of himself and didn’t shoot well - this was never his problem before, /the boy is smart, with good size and weight and will be called upon to relieve Steve Downing many times this winter. Ultimately he might be the one saving factor. It could be chiefly the baby of Jerry Mermering in more than one ball game. With this in mind I would imagine that coach Knight is wondering about the outdoor court activity in Vincennes. If he is, then he should sleep well at night. I'think Jerry Mermering will be a well-known ball player, one who has a lot of respect of the fans and an important factor in the Big Ten title race. King Basketball is never out of season in Indiana nor at I.U. Many people are wondering about the coming season and rightfully so. It is not so much the pro signing of Big George McGinnis as it is the turmoil with last year’s team. Probably the best news so far is the resignation of Ed Daniels who might go to Marquette and be an AllAmerican but at least he won’t be around to knock the I.U. establishment. The knockers are always those who should do more and in fact do less. The big men on the team next year have to be Steve Downing and Joby Wright. The rumor that Joby would sign as a pro hardship case hasn’t yet materialized. With Ed Daniels gone Joby won’t have someone to stir him and this plus the senior year inspiration pointing toward a fro shot could make him what he has always promised to be. Joby could be one of the best in the conference. He could be a big flop. Let us hope he is the tops department.

Steve Downing should come into his own this year and if he does we will be dangerous from the word go. Our bench may not be strong but Steve Downing just might be one of the nation’s top players by conference time. Tony Hinkle once said that he would be better than George McGinnis. This remains to be seen but in any event he is coming along and from spring and summer looksees he could lead us right up there where we thought George would take us. His defense is superb and what a man on the boards. He was the top percentage shooter in the state his senior year in high school and has to be regarded as a star. The other forward might be Rick Ford who, as a senior, could take a notion to play as hard as he gripes. He is a fine shooter and hasn’t seemed to settle down emotionally but he is a year older. Ford has a battle on his hands to stay first five and probably isn’t so considered at this point. He is a little small but jumps well and is quick. If Downing and Wright take care of the rebounding then Rick could be very important getting the points. John Ritter has spent the summer touring Australia and should come back ready to go after his terrible time this spring when the “anti” boys had to find someone to be against and worked themselves into being against one of the finest gentlemen in the midwest. The guy who was jealous went to Marquette so thatxhplps there. John can still play both guard and forward and was al great high school shooter. He is my favorite to go with Downing and Wright. The guards — that is a story for next week.

Burkholder of Syracuse, won the boys’ 16-21 class. The girls’ division winner was Mary Davenport, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney B. Davenport of North Webster. The summer tennis program was conducted by Wawasee high school tennis coach Don Scholer who gave lessons to those who attended classes during June and July. ■ -
