Farm Safety Week July 25-31
LAFAYETTE — Accidents involving farm residents continue to occur in great numbers each year despite the declining farm population. This isn’t to say that farm residents are more careless or accident prone than others. In fact, they have learned from years of experience that farm safety must be taken seriously. Yet, in spite of all efforts, accidents to farm residents continue ... as they do to other segments of our society. In 1969, some 6,900 farm residents were killed and 600.000 injured in accidents throughout the nation, reports F. R. Willsey. Purdue university extension safety specialist. Os this number. 1,800 died of farm-related work accidents and another 1,300 in home tragedies. With the observance of National Farm Safety Week. July 25-31, a reemphasis of safety practices becomes timely. Theme of this year’s safety week is “Protect Yourself — Work Safely!”

Willsey suggests reviewing these safeguards: — equip your tractor (s) with a protective frame or crush resistant cab. — keep all guards and shields in place when operating machinery and power tools of any kind. — when applying pesticides, wear gloves and recommended protective clothing and chemical respirators. — install fire extinguishers in buildings, or motor vehicles, tractors and self-propelled equipment. — check electrical wiring; use proper size fuses. — protect your eyes with glasses or goggles with safety lenses. — wear safety shoes, especially for repair and construction jobs, machinery operations and materials handling. — protect your head with an industrial type “hard” hat or "bump” cap.
Era Os The Spink
It was almost dike a story-book tale such as Cinderella. For last Friday evening, the lake level portion of Wawasee Preparatory school was returned to the era of the Spink Hertel. Local and summer residents of the area along with members of the staff at Prep made the transformation. Pictures of the aid Spink Hotel days decorated the walls, drapes were hung, wall decorations were made and a bandstand canopy hung in the main dining room. Guests, many of whom were dressed in formal attire, entered through the main entrance and descended the grand staircase into the main ballroom where the music of the L. Gullotta Combo greeted them with music from a by-gone era.

The ballroom and the buffet dining areas were lit only by candlelight and light from a few of the old indirect lights found in the hotel storeroom and brought out for the occasion. Until the rain forced them inside, many of the guests strolled along the waterfront enjoying the cool, night breezes from Lake Wawasee. A buffet was served later in the evening under a fountain of flowers and lighted by silver candelabra. The excellent food was catered for the affair ami was enjoyed by everyone. An added feature was the continuous showing of some of the original public relations movie films of the old Spink. The film showed the airport, air-
planes at the dock, sea sledding, speedboat rides, beach and shore activities and many other functions of the old hotel days. This brought back nostalgic memories to many of the guests. As they left, all agreed that it had been an enjoyable evening. As the final guests departed and the candles were extinguished, the grand ballroom quieted down and turned back into the school dining hall. Only the memories of the strains of music, the comeraderie of old acquaintances renewed, and the aura of by-gone days remained. Will the Spink return again? All agreed that it was a happy, fun evening. For those who revisited the Spink Hotel last Friday evening, the hope was that this will become an annual affair.

SYRACUSE — Neil Simon’s comedy hit, '’‘Plaza Suite” will be presented by the Enchanted Hills Playhouse at Lake Wawasee August 4 through 15. The play is three one-act farces set in a suite of New York’s Plaza Hotel, and centered on the theme of middle-age and marriage. The first visitors to the suite are a suburban couple celebrating their 23d or is it their 24th anniversary. The wife wants to recapture the romance of their wedding night, spent in the same suite, or was it the one upstairs? The husband can think only of his business, his waistline and his secretary. In the second act, an aging Hollywood producer invites his old high school sweetheart, now a housewife in Tenafly, N.J., to share vodka and whatever follows. He murmurs that he desires her because she was the only “real person”/ in his life, while she, who has [watched his career from afar is willing to accept his advances as long as they are accompanied by juicy Hollywood gossip. In the third act, a distraught mother and father whose guests have gathered downstairs for their daughter’s SBOOO wedding, are nibbling fingernails instead hors d’oeuvres because the bride has locked herself in the bathroom. Threats, pleas, cajoling and attempts to break down the door are to no avail. The ending to the zany comedy won’t surprise anyone under 30. All three couples are played by Janet Hayes and John Newton now appearing in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” at the Playhouse. Appearing in varying roles as waiter, bellhop and
