NEWS ABOUT 4-H 'Achievement' SPECIAL - “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step” - that’s an old Chinese proverb. President John F. Kennedy quoted it in his inaugural address just a decade ago. The young Pf&ident was talking about beginning new programs in America but he could just as well have been talking about the 4-H achievement program. That’s what it’s all about, taking the first step. it doesn’t really matter if the 4-H’er becomes the most proficient in his club and gets*a medal saying so. It does matter that he makes the effort. There are over two million young people, between the ages of 9 and 19 enrolled in the 4-H achievement program supervised by the Cooperative Extension Service. Starting with their own special interests they develop their skills. But they don’t stop there. Before you know it they are helping the younger, newer members to “learn by doing.” As they gain confidence and added skills they find themselves working as junior leaders and spearheading activities in their schools and communities. And they seem to have more fun in 4-H than ever before. For more information concerning the 4-H achievement program and other 4-H activities contact the county extension office.
