Week-Long Gala —. , Mentone Girl Holds Fair Queen Title
Pretty Jeri Pritchard of Mentone is the current Kosciusko county fair queen. She will be on hand Saturday night. August 7, to help Jack Underwood of WOWO crown the 17th queen at the close of the 1971 fair. The fair queen is chosen by voters who contribute one cent for each vote they wish to cast. The money goes to the Alpha Beta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority who conduct the contest in corporation with the fair officials The Cardinal Learning center and other speech and hearing projects are eventual recipients of the funds collected Jeri is a 1971 graduate of Mentone high school. At Fairgrounds Aug. 2-7 ■BBSs Bl _* fl 12.30 PER POUND! — Some of the most expensive steak ever eaten in Kosciusko county came from last year’s grand champion steer as it sold for 12.30 per pound at the auction on Thursday night. The Hereford steer weighed 930 pounds and sold for a total of 12,139. Members of the Lowery Shopping Center in Warsaw purchased the animal from Debbie Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Miller of r 2 Claypool. * — i H
4-H Livestock Sale At Fair A High Point
The sale of 4-H livestock at the Kosciusko County Fair is one of the high spots of the 4-H year. The sale will be held Thursday evening, August 5 starting at 6:30 p m in the livestock arena. An estimated 75 head of lambs, 150 hogs and 125 steers will be sold. Each 4-H member is limited to one sale in each livestock division. The only exception is that all champions may sell. Rules of selling are the same as in past years. Hogs and lambs will be sold as of their Monday weights. Steers are weighed immediately before going into sale ring. Club members are instructed not to water or feed steers after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Auctioneers from throughout the county donate their services and the decking is done by the Warsaw banks. The First National Bank will handle the
cattle this year, the Lake City Bank will clerk the hog and sheep sales. A small deduction is made from each sale to finance the publicizing of buyers. Members of the sale committee are as follows: Ed Washier, Leo Anglin, Devon Davis, Dorris Harrold, Jim Thomas, Ivan Zimpleman, Willis Alt, Don Robinson, Elmer Martin. Kenneth Fawley, Fred Powell, Tom Smith, Jerry Grady, Leon Tucker, Ed Beigh, Dennie Conley, Don Frantz, and Keith Carrington.
Tuesday Is 4-H Tag Day At County Fair Tuesday. August 3, has been designated at 4-H Tag Day at the Kosciusko County Fair. 4-H members from 45 clubs will be selling tags which will identify those who are a 4-H club supporter. The purpose of tag day will be to add to the Accumulative 4-H Building Fund which is a long range program for a 4-H club building. At present the 4-H clubs have no facilities under their control for exhibits, year round meetings, educational or recreational events. The first funds accumulated w&re through the sale of ducks at the 1970 Fair at which time each Warsaw bank made a purchase of $125 to start the fund. Additional money has been added through the sale of popcorn by 4-H members this summer.
