OBITUARIES
George L. Coy Services were held last week for George L. Coy, 58, of r 3 ; Albion and a former Milford and Syracuse area resident. He died at the Whitley County hospital where he was admitted on July 3 following a heart attack. Mr. Coy was born in Van Buren township, Kosciusko April 2, 1913 to Clarence and Lesta (Gilbert) Coy. His early years and a portion of his married life were spent in the Syracuse-Milford area. On May 19, 1935, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen O’Neal at Syracuse and she survives. He was a farmer and member of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. Also surviving are one son, Robert Coy of r 3 Albion; one daughter, Mrs. Lauren Osbun, r 3 Kendallville; seven grandchildren and one brother Clifford Coy, r 3 Warsaw. A brother. Lauris, preceded him in death. ' Burial was in Sparta cemetery at Kimmell. Guy C. Rarig Guy C. Rarig, 69, father of Mrs. Don Beer, Milford, died Friday at Walker Memorial hospital, AVon Park, Fla. Death was due to complications following an illness of a year. He was born on December 31. 1901 at Syracuse where he lived until nine years ago when he moved to Sebring, Fla. He was united in marriage to Mary E. Peters on November 26, 1957 and she survives. He was manager of Wawasee Golf club for 26 years and South Shore Golf club for 10 years In addition to the widow arid daughter, he is survived by a son, LaMar of Sebring, Fla ; a daughter, Mrs James (Caroli Hickey of Arlington Heights. Ill.; a stepson. Russell Peters of Tallahassee. Fla ; a stepdaughter. Mrs. James (Gleneen 1 Ferrell of Dothan, Ala.; 11 grandchildren. 2 step grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, one brother, George of Gray town.

Ohio; and 2 half sisters of Goshen. Memorial services were held at Sebring on Sunday and at the Sutter funeral home in Pittsfield, 111., on Wednesday. Burial was at Pittsfield. • Knox H. Stetler Funeral services were held Saturday for Knox H. Stetler. 73, of r 2 Syracuse. A lifetime resident of the Syracuse community, he passed away at 1:10 p.m. Thursday at the Nicholson Nursing home. Goshen, where he had resided since September of 1989. Death was due to complications following an illness of two years. Mr. Stetler was born in Benton township. Elkhart county, on October 12. 1897 to William and Nellie (Hire) Stetler. In 1920 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Hire and she died in 1943 He married Josephine Nicodemus in 1947 and she survives. He was a farmer, member of the Calvary Lutheran church at Cromwell, the Syracuse Masonic Lodge, and an insurance agent in the area for 25 years. In addition to the widow he is survived by two sons, Wesley Stetler. Temperance. Mich., and Wendell of Downey, Calif.; one stepson. Ivan Nicodemus, Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren; and one brother, Joe Stetler of Ligonier One brother preceded him in death Rev Q. L. Kleestie of Columbia City and pastor of his church, officiated and burial was in Syracuse cemetery George R. Hodgson George R. Hodgson, 81, of 306 North Harrison street, Syracuse, died at 5:10 p m July Bat Goshen hospital where he had been a patient for some time Death was due to complications. ° He was born in Illinois September 15. 1889 to Joseph and Edna (Goshorn) Hodgson and prior to moving to Syracuse, had been visiting in the community since 1962. coming from Kimmell He was married to Lydia
Duncan in 1909 and she preceded him in death in 1969. Mr. Hodgson served as a railroad agent and station operator for the B & O railroad for 25 years. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Vera O’Haver of Syracuse; one sister. Mrs. Phoebe Hocker, Syracuse; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. One sister preceded him in death. Rev. John Secor officiated for the Saturday service and burial was in Syracuse cemetery. Francis L. Speigle Francis L. Speigle. 65. of Houston, Texas[ and a former Pierceton resident and brpther of Mrs. Ruth Mitterling, Pierceton, and Harold L. Speigle of North Webster, died July 3 in Houston Another brother. Arthur Speigle of Claypool also survives. Services were held last Wednesday in Houston. Earl Max Kline Graveside services were held Tuesday morning for Earl Max Kline. 75. formerly of the North Webster and Ligonier areas. He died Sunday morning at Veteran’s hospital, Marion, following an illness of two months. Mr. Kline was b6rn at North Webster on October 7, 1895. to William F. and Madge (Makemson) Kline. His wife, the former Margaret Horner to whom he was married in 1921. preceded him in death in 1939. He was a member of the Ligonier Masonic lodge, veteran of WW I, member of the Methodist church at Ligonier and had been a grocer in the North Webster and Liganier areas for a number of years. Survivors include . two daughters. Mrs. James (Julia) Coy of" Ligonier and Mrs Raymond (Constance) Silveus, Sarasota, Fla.; and six grandchildren. One son and one sister preceded him in death. Burial was in North Webster cemetery Herbert Gawthrop Herbert V. Gawthrop. 80. r 2 Leesburg, died Sunday at 6:40 p.m. at his home Death was due to complications following an illness Mr. Gawthrop was a native and lifetime resident of Leesburg. He was bom on January 22. 1891 to Victor H and Helen (Thompson) Gawthrop. His first wife, the former Jessie Ervin, died m 1950. On September 14, 1957. he married the former Georgene Ingram. Mr. Gawthrop was a retired farmer and a member of the Milford Christian church The survivors, in addition to the widow, are one son, Herbert. Jr., Glen Ellyn, DI.; a stepdaughter. Mrs. Ross (Virginia* Songer. Rossville, 111. ; and three grandchildren. One sister preceded him in death. Funeral services were conducted today (Wednesday) at the Mishler funeral home. Carl Shearer officiated the services. Burial was in the Leesburg cemetery. >
Harley Dale Chaney Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Harris Troxel funeral home, North Webster, for Harley Dale Chaney, 87, of South Bend. He passed away at 4:35 p.m. Monday at Memorial hospital. South Bend, following a one year illness. Mr. Chaney was born in Allen County on November 11, 1883, to John and Olive (Bothel) Chaney. He lived for the past year with his son of South Bend, coming there from North Dakota. His wife, the former Georgia Mae Scott to whom he was married in 1905. died in 1910. He was a rancher. Survivors include one son, Elmer, South Bend; a sister. Mrs. Cleo Thomas of Lakeland. Fla.; eight grandchildren; 15, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. ■ One daughter preceded him. Friends may call pt the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-9 Wednesday. Rev. Chester Reed will officiate and burial will be in North Webster cemetery. Rease Spradlin Funeral services were held Monday for Rease Spradlin. 60. of Rocky Branch, Ky., and brother of Mrs. John (Lulu) King of Pierceton and Mrs. Kelvin (Wanda) Stoner, Syracuse Graveside services were held at Pierceton Tuesday afternoon. Mr.* Spradlin died Sunday morning of a heart attack suffered at his home. He had resided in the Pierceton area for 30 years prior to his retirement in January of this year at which time he moved to Kentucky. A native of Scott County, Tenn., he was born on May 29. 1911 to Elisha and Beckie (Watson) Spradlin. He* is also survived by Iris mother, of Rocky Branch. Ky.; seven other sisters. Mrs. Floyd (Bodie) Veil of Rocky 7 Branch, Mrs. Sullivan (Lucy) Smith, Bristol. Mrs. Ralph (Artie) Shock and Mrs. Virgil (Effie) Hensley, both of Cromwell, Mrs. Gerald (Emma) Bormuth. Niceville, Fla:; Mrs. Richard (Connie) Cress of Orlando. Fla., and Mrs. Lawrence (Eva) Stevens, Warsaw; two brothers, Jodie Spradlin of Middlebury and Clifford Spradlin, Rocky Branch, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Arthur Alexander Mrs. Glorvina Elizabeth Alexander, 72. of r 1 North Webster, passed away at 5:45 a m. Tuesday at Goshen hospital where she had been a patient since Thursday. In failing health since April, death was due to complications. • Mrs. Alexander was born January 29. 1899, at Rawson, Ohio, to Jessie P. and Carrie O. (Boyer) Benn and moved from Rochester to the North Webster community 15 years ago. She married Arthur Alexander at Muncie on June 8, 1922, and he survives. Mrs. Alexander operated the concession stand at Epworth Forest for ten years, was a member of the North Webster Methodist church and the Order of Eastern Star at Rochester Survivors in addition to the husband are two daughters. Mrs. Lynn (Mary Jo) Overmeyer of Marion and Mrs. W’illiam (Marilyn) Kackler, Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Helen Anderson, North Webster. Two daughters and two brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist church in North • Webster with Rev John Weeks officiating. Walker. 85, Indianapolis, widow of the late J. A. Garfield Walker, a former owner of the Syracuse Journal, on Sunday. July 4. Mrs. Walker was the daughter of Levi N. and Eliza Kitson and was born near Syracuse in Elkhart county. She was graduated from the former Madame Blaker’s Teacher college and worked with Fletcher Place Community Center. Ruben Salas, 30, Milford, arrested over the week end and booked at the county jail on a charge of driving while his operator's license was suspended and driving while under the influence of intoxicants.
