Second Football Camp To Be Held At Prep
Wawasee Prep begins its second annual football camp this next week end with registration Sunday afternoon. July 18, at the Prep in Syracuse. The camp will run for two weeks; ending July 31. Prep’s summer sports camp director, Phil Jones, reports that boys (ages 10-16) from five states have signed up at this point. Directing the instruction again this year is Wally Moore, offensive line coach at Notre Dame . Assisting Coach Moore will be Brian Boulac and Bill - Hickey, both coaches from Notre Dame. the camp. All of the equipment needed by the camper will be provided. This year weight training will be provided, with the addition of the Challenger machine. Special training films will be used during the mental meetings, along with a special notebook for each of the campers. Aside from the fact that this is the only camp of its kind in the state of Indiana, director Phil Jones of Prep feels that a camper should have a unique experience in his free time. With the tennis Courts, water skiing, scuba diving, canoeing, and other areas of enjoyment, the camper will have a great time. Scramble At Wawasee Golf Wawasee Golf club held their scramble Saturday with the winning team having a score of 32 which was four under par. The winners were Rex Lindenman, first; Leroy Chokey, second; Paul Kizer, third; and Rosemary Burkhart, fourth. There were two teams that tied for second with a score of 35 for one under par: The first team consisted of Paul Michaels, Merl Postma. Doris Scheidel and Shirley Ellis. The second team was Elmer Largen, George Ydung, Gladys Cripe and Kathleen Kizer. Blind Bogey Saturday, in a blind bogey play, there was a three-way tie with a score of 75. The players were Kelly Hunsberger, Virgil Kallansa and Glen McHargue. On Sunday. D. Colby won the blind bogey with a score of 77. Junior Clinic Every Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock, a junior clinic will be held for one hour for children between the ages of seven and 17. For more information, call Wawasee Golf club. ■ fl DAVID T. RANKIN David T. Rankin New Swimming, C.C. Coach David T. Rankin of Lafayette has been hired to teach health and physical education in the Lakeland Community School Corporation this fall. He will also coach the WaWasee high school varsity swimming and cross country teams. Rankin is a graduate of Purdue university with a major in physical education. He has an extensive background in acquatics. He has earned varsity letters in swimming in high school and in college and was cocaptain of the Purdue swim team. He also acted as an assistant coach at Purdue, helping with intercollegiate swimming. Rankin has had experience with pool management, as a scuba instructor and a lifeguard and is qualified as a Red Cross water safety instructor. He served with the United States navy for two years as a photographer. SECOND SESSION OF SWIMMING LESSONS There will be second session of swimming lessons given by Mrs. Jerry Ganshorn at Waubee Lake. The session will begin Monday, July 12. Beginners time will be 10:00 and advanced will be at 11:00. There will be a small' fee charged for the lessons.

The classes will run for one week, with two hour sessions, from 9 to 11 in the morning. The only entrance requirement is that the boy or girl must be able to swim, and be eleven years old for the junior certification and sixteen years old for the senior certification. • Those interested in the special instruction should call Wawasee Prep, and ask for Tom Nova. Syracuse Defeats South Whitley 7-3 Pinch hitter Clem Lisor singled two runs across in the sixth inning which proved to be the winning margin as Syracuse defeated South Whitley 7-3 in the pony league game played Monday at South Whitley. Pitcher, Chad Singrey, picked up his third win against one lose. / giving up two hits and striking out 11. Syracuse now bolds first place with an eight and one record in league play and a ten to one record overall. Syracuse has now wwi nine straight games and hopes to assure at least a tie for the championship by defeating Leesburg Wednesday at Syracuse. The box scores are as follows: D. Ganz, 301; C. Ashley Hawk, r 2 Syracuse (Lake Wawasee), has his hands full with a delightful job of training several young Wawasee high school athletes for the Junior Olympics. Hawk is himself an allAmerican cross country runner while a| Drake university, Des Moines, lowa, (1944), and while at Purdue university (1946). Joni Caple also competes in the shot put, and Becky Long competes in the 220 yard dash. With the girls are Pat Spearman, a senior, in the 100 yard dash, all of these competing in the 16-17 age group. And in the 14-15 age group is Bev Bergbom, competing in the 100 and 220 yard dash and long jump. # 3
At Fort Wayne Saturday The young athletes qualified at a regional meet at Elmhurst high school in Fort Wayne on June 14, participating in the Amateur Athletics Union, and will go to Zolner Stadium, also in Fort Wayne, this Saturday for further competition. If they qualify at Fort Wayne Saturday, they move on to the national meet at Detroit in August, Hawk said. Syracuse Little League Games In a continued major league game, Pilcher out hit Lions for their fourth win behind the pitching of Carl Eby. The leading hitters for Pilcher were Ken ’ Patton, Keith Patton, and Keith Cripe. The losing pitcher was Stan Krow. In the second game of the double hitter Keith Cripe and Dan Walker led Pilcher over the Lions 12-4. The winning pitcher was Carl Eby and the loser Mike Field. The leading hitter for the losers was Mike Field. Monday night game posted one of the best games of the season as Rotary was edged out by Pilchers 2-0. Fine defensive play especially by Rotary kept them in the game until the bottom of the fifth inning when Pilcher pushed across two runs. Mark Francis gave up 4 hits and one walk but could not out do Carl Eby who gave up (me hit and one walk. Winners For South Shore Play Os The Day The play of the day for Tuesday’s ladies day at the South Shore golf club was a flag tourney. 18 hole winners were as follows — Barb Hulley, first; Bee Crews, ■ second; Leila Connolly, third; and Stella Heckaman, fourth. Nine hole winners were as follows — Nedra Beebe, first; Lori Welty, second; Karen Caudill, third; Ruth Fuller, fourth; Jaunita Thompson, fifth; Mary Sullivan, sixth; Annie Gallahan, seventh; and Betty Nyce, eighth. Next week’s play will be blind partners. Hostesses for the 18 hole players will be Leila Connolly and Thelma Hattersley. Hostesses for the nine hole play will be Nedra Beebe and Jennie Lamley. The play of the day for ladies at South Shore Golf club last Tuesday was low gross, low net and low putt. The winners for low gross for 18 holes were Barb Hulley, first and Dorothy Jones, second. For low nst, the winners were Ruth Banta, first and Thelma Hattersley, second. Betty Bowen won on low putts. The nine hole winners for low gross were Brenda Kuhn, first; Pearl Hehrmann, second; and Mary Jane Lesh, third. Low net winners, were Karen Caudill, first; Joan Baker, second; and Ruth Fuller and Eddy Newhouser tied for third.
