C.ARD OF THANKS I wish to thank my friends and neighbors and the North Webster Church of the Brethren for their many acts of kindness following the loss of my brother. Donald Westlake MILFORD Library Notes By Mr* Dorothea Kerlln Now that summer is here, hot weather and vacation time should be the time for reading, for adults as well as children. Children in the first four grades are brightening up the children’s room with their “stringers of fish ”, For each book read, a fish z may be selected and placed upon th stringer, which bears the child’s name. For several weeks the librarians cut out fish from multi-colored construction paper, at home, at the library, and even while drying hair, until now we think we have a sufficient supply to last the summer. Not only that, but we made our own confetti as we punched holes in .each fish. The pre-schoolers are participating in the fish idea too, as for each book read to them, a tiny fish is stamped on the chart opposite the child’s name on the chart. As has been the plan for the past two years, Mrs. Elizabeth Brunjes will be in charge of the children’s room until September 1, while Mrs. Donn Kesler is home with her family. She will return then in September. Mrs. Kesler has conducted the story hours each Saturday afternoon during the winter and spring, with the last one being held May 29. A total of 538 children heard the stories and records with an average attendance of 17. The largest number for one afternoon was 32 and the smallest group was eight. Mrs. Kesler told most erf the stories, but she did have the following persons who took a turn: Misses Susan Price, Susie Haab, Linda Kesler, and Mrs. Brunjes and Mrs. Kerlin. Susan Price used a flannelgraph for one of her programs, and Jeff Maggart and Renee Wolf entertained the children one afternoon with their puppet show. We are very appreciative of the interest parents, as well as the children, showed throughout the series of story hours. A number of parents brought their children as well as neighbor children, in from the country, and treats were provided at various times by the mothers The first story hour last fall was held on October 31. We will look forward to starting again in the fall. Speaking of the children’s room, have you seen the colorful mobiles that Mrs. Phend’s art class made? Os course they are in keeping with our summer theme, fish, sea horse, octopus etc. in unusual formations. We are very grateful to Arthur (Ted) Baumgartner for presenting a valuable, attractive, and informative book to the library, entitled “A Genealogy of The Baumgartner Family, Descendants of Benedicht B. and Anna B Baumgartner, born and 1797. Joseph C. Baumgartner. formerly of Milford, now of Cleveland, Ohio has worked several years in collecting information and photographs, and has just recently had the book published. Mr. Baumgartner has written several other books, one of which we have used extensively in the library being “The Challenge of Democracy.” Another former Milford resident has written a book published in 1970, entitled PL-1 A Self-Instructional Manual. The author Edna Hollar Barbour, is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Hollar and sister of Mrs. Bernice Dwyer of Milford. Mrs Barbour is an instructor in the Department of Accountancy College of Business, Northern Illinois university. A copy of this book has been given 'to the local library by the author, who was a regular patron of the library for 18 years and a student in the Milford schools for 12 years. The purpose of the book is to teach anyone who wishes to learn to write computer programs. We appreciate being remembered by former residents, and proud of having local authors’ works on our shelves. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Siri and family of Milwaukee, Wis., spent the week end with relatives in Goshen and Syracuse. She is the former Pat Seiffert of Syracuse. Mrs. Lulu Francis and Mrs. Arnold Pfingst of Syracuse spent Friday visiting with relatives and friends at Kendallville.
