14 YEARS AGO, JUNE 6.1957 Again the men of Hastings have spent lime improving the grounds of the Island cemetery under the capable leadership of Bert Irvine, and caretakers, Seven Biller, Stanley Hollar, and Dennis Rumfelt The "Island Cemetery" sign at the entrance painted and placed by Mr. and Mrs Robert. One of the largest Milford high school alumni banquets in the history of the school was held Saturday night at the Yellow Banks Hotel on Webster Lake There were 205 who registered Special recognition was given Mr and . Mrs Arthur Baumgartner for having attended every alumni meeting since they graduated in 1924 Penny Clark, nine-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ren Clark, left by plane Monday from Chicago for a visit with her grandparents. Hollar. 1088 The first band concert of the summer was held here last evening, given by the Milford school band, under the able direction of Joseph Judkins. 40 YEARS AGO. JUNE 4.1931 Herman Weisser won an honorable mention prize of $25 in the advance amateur class of the sixth annual soap sculpture competition for Proctor and Gamble prizes. Ivory soap was used in his production which the company named "Weisser’s Ivory Dance Orchestra.” There were eight parts to his entry: Piano, clannett. trombone. E flat alto, B flat bass, cornet, and trap drums, each having its respective player and an MBC microphone Mr Weisser was notified by telegram of his success and was extended an invitation to be present at the opening day of the exhibition and awarding of prizes on June 2 at the American Anderson gallery. 57th and Madison Ave.. LIGONIER NEWS By Rose Cunningham w GREGORY WEIMER Greg Weimer Wins Niccum Scholarship Gregory Duane W eimer, son of Mr and Mrs. Lennel D. Weimer, of Ligonier, has been named the recipient of a four year scholarship from the Niccum Educational Trust. This trust was established in 1958 from memorial gifts and funds of the Elmo E. Niccum estate. Mr. Niccum was the president of Goshen Rubber Co. Inc. Weimer, first ranking student in the 1971 graduating class of West Noble high school, on behalf of Marjorie H. Niccum, was
awarded the scholarship on the basis of his academic record, leadership and character. Any graduate of a public high school in Elkhart. Saint Joseph. Marshall. Kosciusko. Noble or LaGrange counties is eligible to apply for the scholarship. Since 1958 36 students have received financial assistance through this trust. Weimer plans to attend Purdue university and study computer engineering. Summer Sale Plans Announced By Ligonier C Os C The Chamber of Commerce recently announced that the annual Side Walk Sale will be held on Friday and Saturday. June 25 and 26. Clem Jablonski, chairman of the Merchant’s division, will head the committee for this event and working with him will be James Golden and Steve Lawrence Dollar Day is being planned for Friday and Saturday. Aug 6 and 7. The committee in charge is Charles Musselman. Roy McAdams and Robert Miller. Herbert Galloway, chamber president, announced at the meeting last week that he wished to congratulate the West Noble science club on its anti-pollution studies and their program of action. Members of the Chamber of Commerce urge them to include an anti-litter campaign in Ligonier and area and to join with other youth groups in the “Make Home An Attractive Place To Live’’ campaign. lasting throughout this year. ' The Chamber also thanked Kenny Franks’ Scout Troop 106. the Cub Scouts and troop leaders and committeemen in working with the Auxiliary Police and volunteers on the cleaning of Cavin street.
Awards Program Held Wednesday The third annual West Noble junior high awards program was held Wednesday morning in the Cromwell gym. Robert Wechter, principal, gave the awards to the following ten honor students of each class with the decision based entirely on scholarship: Seventh graders — Marilyn Nelson. Michele Byer. Karen Gorsuch. Claire Franks. Jeanna Ness. RandyWeimer. Barb DiGangi. Jan Becker. Tom Donaldson. Suella Lehman and Phyllis Whirledge: Eighth graders — Penny Lohrei. Debbie McLallin, Dan McKibben. Martha Lehman, Sandy Walker, Mike Cunningham. Sandy Wilson, Janet Anderson. RandyShultz and Charisse Wolf. Awards were also given for perfect attendance and participation in extra curricular activities. Summer Schedule Is Announced West Noble high school has announced the following summer schedule for courses in driver education, biology and personal typing. The classroom instruction for Drivers Training will be June 1. 2. and 3 from 7:30 to 11:30 am.; June 4 from 7:30 to 10:30 am.; June 7 through 11 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Driving will begin on June 14 Approximately 150 students are enrolled for this course Biology will run from 7:30 to 11:30a.m. June7andcontinue for 8 weeks. This will meet the requirements for high school biology and will give two credits. Thirty two students are enrolled and Roger Tuggle will be the instructor. Personal typing will also start June 7 and run 8 weeks. Hours are from 8 to 10 a m. Twenty
students have enrolled with Robert Hayes as instructor. Classes will be taught in the new high school building and all students are responsible for their won transportation. Masonic Members Four Home At Franklin May 23 A bus trip to the Indiana Masonic Home at Franklin was enjoyed by 32 Masonic and Eastern Star members from Ligonier last Sunday.
