Warm summer air usually brings golfers out in droves in the Lakeland area, and this year is no exception. On Saturday and Sunday, unusually hot days, all golf courses here were crowded as more and more people are taking to the great outdoor sport of hitting, then chasing the little wiiite ball. The Lakeland area is fortunate in the abundance and availability of several very find golf courses. Aside from the three courses right here in the Syracuse area, a &-hole par three course on road 15 at New Paris is drawing considerable attention and traffic. Update Club Houses In at least two cases, course club houses have been updated last year and this year. Maxwelton went first, under the guidance of a new owner. Merle Smith, with a new club house a year ago. The new club house has men s and women's locker rooms, complete with sauna baths and showers, aside from the usual dining and bar facilities. This year Maxwelton is watering six fairways (1,2, 3,4, 17 and 18), and will do others next year, according to club manager Nelson Auer. Pro at Maxwelton this year is Bob Evans. Eight new carts have been added. Wawasee Golf Club has made no significant improvements this year, having done so a number of years ago. Pro-owner Don Byrd installed a small artificial lake a year ago as part of a program to drain a low area along the B & 0 railroad tracks. The Wawasee course, always well groomed and taken care of. has always enjoyed excellent play. ‘‘That’s because we have the best course around here,” states Byrd. Perhaps the biggest changes came about at South Shore Golf Club, under new owner-manager Tom Tuttle. He has enlarged the pro shop, dining facilities, added a completely new kitchen, and remodeled and upgraded both the men’s and women’s locker

facilities. A new building has been added on the grounds where electric carts are kept, and one part of the building is for members to keep their clubs and pull carts. South Shore has always enjoyed excellent play during the summer months, and as the new season starts, it appears this will be a bumper year. New Paris. It is having excellent play, according to Bill Tarman. a partner in the operation and club manager. The course is lighted for night play, has regulation greens, and is completely watered. Along beside the course is a driving range, miniature course and snack bar. So there it is. If you’re a swinger, it’s that time of year. Get out those clubs and come out for a few hours of exercise and fun.
facts about ‘OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind. By JERI SEELY Stop! Look! Listen! Do you always stop, look and listen before crossing the railroad tracks in Our Town. The crossings are- 7 poorly marked and the numbe- of trains which pass through Milford daily is surprising. Would you care to guess how many? * Believe it or not, one of Our Town’s residents has counted as high as eight or nine trains on the track in one day. Seems like something should be done dbout the condition of the markings at the crossings before someone is seriously injured or killed in Our Town. The Memorial Day parade is set for 10 a.m. on Monday, May 31. The American Legion has announced Dr. Otis Bowen will the Memorial Day speaker of Our Town. „

Members of the Legion Auxiliary will be selling poppies on Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22. Won’t you wear a poppy this year? Friend husband and 1 were off to Michigan on Sunday to find mom and dad (Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bushong) and Mr. and Mrs. John Chambers. Seems we looked everywhere but the right place ... we never did find them. We even found the park where the Dan Leverniers, Dale Stumps and Ralph Berkeypiles have their trailers parked although we didn’t know it until we arrived back in Milford and eventually talked with father on the telephone. Next time . . . we’ll find them for sure! I think. Milford Lions were out in full force Monday night selling Candy for Cancer. This is a district-wide project to raise money for the purchase of a 35-MEV linear accelerator to be used by the people of Indiana in the fight to save lives of cancer victims.
