New Salem By MRS. HERB MOREHOUSE SUNDAY SERVICES Scripture reading during the morning worship hour was taken from I Peter 4:7-16. The Rosebud Trio consisting of Melinda, Melissa and Melodie Tom sang “If That Isn't Love." They were accompanied by their mother ,;Mrs. Everett Tom, Jr. Pastor Lewycky delivered the morning message “God’s Taxes: New Form,” using several scripture references such as Acts 3:3-6; I Peter 4:6-17; Acts 8:18-22' and Acts 10:4.30 and 31. Pastor Lewycky’s evening message was “Peace Symbol: Sign of Anti-christ?” The church’s third missionary conference will be held May 6-9 with Dr. Don Hillis as guest speaker. Vacation Bible school will be June 8-18 in the evening with classes from 7-8:30 p.m. Junior high, high school and adult classes will be included. -NSATTEND LUNCHEON Mrs. Ruth DeFries, Mrs. Michael West and Mrs. Everett Tom, Jr., attended the luncheon of the Community Gospel church ladies at South Bend on Friday at the YWCA. Table favors were gilted sunflowers which represented “Mr. Sunshining." Singing Simeon Avilas returned thanks for the meal after which he sang four solos, “Amazing Grace," “I’ve Been To The River,” I’ve Travelled Dowti A Lonely Road" and “He Could Have Sent Ten Thousand Angels." The moderator introduced the speaker Mrs. Norma Altrofer from Peoria. 111. She told of her life and how many people became Christians from meetings held in her home. She noted five things she taugh them: 1. Re-born is to be accepted 2. Resources 3. Rights 4. Responsibility and 5. Rewards. -NSFRIENDS HONOR JOHNSONS Over 60 members and friends met Wednesday night in the church fellowship hall for a pot luck supper with the Daryl Johnson family and Floyd Johnson who have been visiting relatives in the area. Saturday morning for their home in Carmel, Maine. - NS—COMMUNITY NEWS Mrs. Robert Hurd was entertained over the past week end at Ball State university by her daughter, Brenda. It was Mother’s week-end at the dorm where Brenda resides. Dennis Shively spent several days last week on furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Max Shively. On Friday evening several relatives and friends called at the Shively home. Those enjoying the evening were Allen Shively of Syracuse? Mrs. Inez Shively and Mrs. Emmel Dye, grandmothers of the soldier; Duane Dye, Ron Ervine, Steve Engel and Mr. and Mrs. John Vance and Michael. Dennis left early Sunday morning and will be stationed at Montery, Calif., where he will attend language school. Dr. and Mrs. Daryl Johnson and family. Mrs. Vida Losey and Floyd Johnson were Monday evening supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Baker and family. Mrs. Inez Shively was a Sunday dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Ginther of Leesburg. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Evans and son of Goshen; a,nd Mr. and Mrs. Guy Morehouse were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Meek and daughters of Syracuse. Afternoon callers were Mr. and Mrs. Everett Morehouse of South Bend. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Mock were Sunday and Monday guests of their daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Rick Montieth and family of Fort Wayne. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Holloway and family of Mentone and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mock and son of Wabash were also Sunday guests. The birthdays of Mrs. Mock and her daughter. Mrs. Holloway, which both occurred celebrated. Mr. and Mrs. Don DeFries of Saint Joseph, Mich., were Saturday guests of Mrs. Ruth DeFries. Emory Stettler. Mr. and Mrs. Dane Rarick and Mr. and Mrs. Gene Rarick. Jonell, Risa and Phillip of New Paris attended the commencement service at the LeToumeau college, Longview, Texas, on Saturday evening. Bethany Church of the Brethren near New Paris. Mrs. Glen Morehouse and daughters attended the wedding Saturday of Miss Ida Juarez and Steve Bender held at the New Paris First Brethren church. Miss Diana Morehouse was one of the attendants and Miss Georgina Morehouse assisted with the gifts. Mrs. Zona Deeter, Mrs. Amanda Stackhouse and Mrs. Iva Etter were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Strasburd. Mrs. Etter remained for a while. Mrs. Bruce Baker and Susie and Mrs. Herbert Morehouse were among the guests at the mother-daughter tea held at the Maple Church of the Brethren west of New Paris on Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Morehouse were Sunday guests at a family gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Fultz and Linda of Fort Wayne. The occasion being the 87th birthday of Harley Fisher which was on Saturday. April 24, and the birthday of Mr. Fultz which will be April 29. Others present were Mrs. Fisher of Peru. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Fisher of Chili and Mr. and Mrs. David Fisher of Battle Creek. Mich. Douglas Drake Escapes Injury In Accident t Douglas Drake, 18. Milford, escaped injury Saturday night in -a one-car accident two miles west of the Texaco station in Milford on the Om road. Drake’s father, police chief Don Drake, reported the younger Drake was driving too fast and did not negotiate the curve. Less than $25 damages were reported to the 1957 Chevrolet by county sheriff deputy Bernard Minear who investigated. No property damage was found. Tires Stolen From OK Sales The Kosciusko county sheriff’s department continue investigation of two tires taken from OK Sales south of Syracuse on SR 13 over the week end. The theft was reported Saturday morning.
Traffic Committee Meets Wednesday Sgt. John Funk presided for the Wednesday afternoon meeting of the Elkhart county Traffic Safety committee at the Dunlap branch of the First National Bank. Among those represented were the PTA council, Elkhart community schools, sheriff of the county, the state farm insurance, county highway and state highway garages, WCMR radio, the county homemakers club, Elkhart police department, chamber staff and REACT. Morris Schrock reported his subcommittee on the Memorial Day safety campaign had decided their slogans and plans. The subcommittee also decided to hold a safety poster contest, to be limited to the Jimtown school this year with Kenn Vinje to arrange for an award for the winner. If the contest proves to be a success, it may be expanded to other schools next year. Other Talk Funk reported on the budget regarding funds from courses at Indianapolis and also that 46 students had taken the defensive driving course in Indianapolis with another class being considered at Crawfordsville. At the present time Phil Stump is organizing a course for Elkhart policemen for defensive driving and when a final date is set, others may be able to participate. Next meeting of the group will be May 12 at the same time and location. LAKELAND LOCALS Mrs. Pearle Wehrly. Milford, entertained at Sunday dinner for the Salvation Heirs of Goshen, who sang at Bethel church. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Reiniche of Goshen, and Mr. and Mrs. Neal Cory and Dave of Milford. Mr. and Mrs. William Troup and family of r 2 Leesburg entertained at supper Thursday evening for the following: Mr. and Mrs. Tom Price. Steve and Lorie, of Warsaw; Mr. and Mrs. Robert L. Beer and Sherri, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Price Jr., all of Milford. < Miss Kathy Troup, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evar Troup of Milford had as her supper guests Friday night Miss Terena Ryman and Miss Kelly Price both from Milford.
