Trade-in Value Enhanced the While Safety, Operational Economies Are Assured the Owner By MICHAEL KELLY V Automotive Editor, Cleveland Plain Dealer Spending a little money on proper car maintenance actually can save you money in the long run. Sound confusing? Actually it isn’t, and here’s why. If you have bought a shiny new car, naturally you want to keep it in proper shape, not only because it is safer to drive, but because eventually, if you’re like most people, you will want to trade it in. A well maintained car, according to both new and used car dealers, is worth more at trade-in time than a car which has not been properly maintained. In many cases the difference can be as much as several hundred dollars. “We love to *ee a car that** in good shape both inside and outside, and especially maintained well under the hood," raid one new car dealer. “We give top dollar in trade on those car* and we just don't get enough of them.” There's another good reason to keep a car maintained properly, and that’s the warranty which came with your new car. While the provisions of warranties are different for each of the major auto companies, and may vary from year to

year, all of them require periodic maintenance to keep the warranty in effect Watch Your Warranty This means that if something major goes wrong with your car and is covered by warranty, you don't have to pay for replacement of it. But if you haven't taken the proper steps to keep the warranty up to date, you will have to pay for the repairs yourself — and that might turn out to be very costly. In general the provisions of a warranty require routine maintenance at specified interval*. Thi» include* oil change* and lubrication, plua eheck* of the various part* of the engine, *uch as the cooling system, generator, brake* and steering. A modern car is composed of many complicated parts, any of which might go wrong at any time. It just makes good sense to have things inspected, and minor work performed at regular intervals.

Simple Steps Can Help Prevent Theft of Car While waiting for a special theft protection device to be installed on your new car or “old faithful." there are several things that can be done to prevent having your car stolen. Keep your car doors locked at all times. Never keep valuables inside your car. Keep only necessary items in your trunk. Another simple way to deter car theft is to keep your car parked under a light at night, if possible

Here’s a Most Revealing Test One of the most revealing tests an experienced mechanic can make for you is a compression test, tn which all spark plugs are removed and pressure readings are compared with specifications. This procedure helps your mechanic determine if the problem is in valves, rings or both. Such a test usually is part of a major engine tune-up, or may coat about SSOO or $6.00 when done as an individual operation. A compression test can be the first step toward putting new life in the old car.

Tune-Up-Important A smart motorist also gets an engine tune-up which includes new distributor points, spark plugs and condenser, at regular intervals. Generally this interval is about every 10,000 miles. Tires should be checked regularly for proper inflation and should be rotated for proper wear, usually every 12,000 miles or so. Many people have their tires checked, and rotated, about twice a year — usually when they put on or take off snow tires. Incidentally we probably won’t have any more snow until late this fall, so if you’ve still got snow tire* on the wheel*, it’* a good idea to take them off now. Keeping the outside of the car clean also is a good idea. In weather like this many people prefer to wash, and wax when necessary, themselves. Others prefer to use

even more sense to keep it maintained properly. The little this costs is repaid by the lack of major repairs.
