Construction To Start On University Hospital Addition
Construction will begin this spring on a $22-million addition of clinic, laboratory, and education facilities to the Indiana university hospital. This will be the third major hospital construction project begun during the last five years at the Medical Center of Indiana university-Purdue university at Indianapolis. —The 233-bed, $15.7-million first phase of the Indiana university hospital was opened last spring. This was the first hospital ever built in Indiana for the specific purposes of education in the health care professions —An $8.3-million addition to Riley Hospital for Children will be dedicated April 28. This is one phase in a major and long-range program to rebuild Indiana's children's hospital. The Indiana university hospital addition, the second of three planned construction phases, has two primary parts: a six-story service, clinic, and education wing, and an underground x-ray therapy and isotope unit. The-x-ray therapy and isotope unit will be built under a landscaped mall west of the hospital so that the earth will absorb x-ray and atomic radiation used in the treatment of cancers. One of the most improtant pieces of equipment for this unit, a linear accelerator which generates an intense beam of radiation for the precise treatment of cancers, is being purchased by the Indiana Lions Clubs. The Hoosier Lions are conducting a state-wide $750,000 campaign to purchase the machine. The six-story addition to the north of the existing hospital will provide space for many of the central hospital services which were not included in the first construction phase The new wing will include facilities for storing, processing, and distributing the sterile supplies required elsewhere in the hospital, and space for the hospital's clinical and pathology laboratories Extensive space will be provided for medical students, physicians enrolled in specialty training programs, and for students m allied health science programs.

Funds for the second phase project will also be used to complete areas left unfinished in the first phase project. The second floor of the Indiana university hospital, now unfinished. will be completed for obstetrics, with beds for 95 patients and bassinets for 62 infants. This unit will include intensive care facilities for newborn infants with serious illnesses. Additional space will also be finished to continue the centralization of the university hospital’s administrative services. The university hospital projects and the Riley hospital projects are integral part of a long-range IUPUI program to develop one of the nation's leading systems of university and affiliated hospitals at the Indianapolis Medical Center. The university hospital program is gradually replacing Long and Coleman hospitals. As patient care programs are moved from Long and Coleman to the new university hospital, these buildings are being converted to use as outpatient clinics, laboratories and classrooms. Neither building is adequate for the patient-care and educational programs required of university hospitals. The Riley hospital projects reflect current and continuing trends in the care of children. As the major diseases of childhood, such as polio, are conquered, the emphasis in such hospitals as Riley has shiften to more complex problems of diagnosis and treatment, such as open heart surgery and congenital diseases. Funds for the second phase project of the'university hospital have been provided by appropriations from the Indiana General Assembly and a $7.6million Federal grant for the development of medical education facilities LAKELAND LOCAL Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hoerr of near Milford have returned from a vacation trip to the southeastern states.
