'-- J Shearer Facts ... by Carl Shearer It’s a fact that the early Christians found a great deal of joy in worshiping together. There are two dangerous tendencies in modern times First, there is the claim that we can worship God anywhere and everywhere. and therefore that the attendance at worship of the church is not essential. No one would deny that the whole earth is the temple of God and we can worship Him anywhere. This is true But, a great deal of the excitement would go out of a football game if there was only one spectator II is so with worship, there is a thrill in corprate worship The truly converted man knows the joy of worshiping together and knows that there is no substitute for it. The second danger is more serious There is a certain type of conversion which leaves a man critical of the Church and of people. It usually leads him into a smaller and smaller sect, in which he thinks be will find a special piety and a better holiness. But. the truly converted man will have the humility to know that he too is far from perfect and his conversion will unite him to people rathethan separate him from then. We invite you to the Milford Christian Church.

Student Seeks Right To Participate In Commencement
Gregory Keith Carpenter, thru his father Chest er Carpenter, has filed an amendment and supplement to his original complaint of September 4, 1970 asking for additional relief regarding enforcement of appearance rules for the commencement exercises at Wawasee high school for 1971. A hearing on the supplemental complaint is scheduled for April 14. in the federal court of South Bend. The complaint is against action taken by the senior class executive council consisting of 17 members elected by the senior class. In December, by a vote of 11-2, with four members absent, the executive council approved a policy statement presented on September 22. as amended by the senior class executive council. The original statement indicated that boy's who did not follow the school’s suggested guidelines concerning length of hair and sideburns throughout the year would not be permitted to participate in commencement exercises. As amended by the senior class executive council, boys could deviate from the policy until the first schedule rehearsal for graduation which was set for May 26. 1971. Henry Smith, principal of the Wawasee high school and Robert Kitson. senior class sponsor, mailed a letter to all parents of graduating seniors on January 18 explaining all the necessaryrequirements for a student to be eligible to participate in the graduation ceremonies. Included in the letter was the following paragraph: “All seniors, boys and girls, who will participate in W’awasee high school’s graduation ceremony will be required to meet appearance standards. Boys’ hair must be off the ears, above the collar, and above the ey brows. No mustaches or beards will be permitted. Sideburns are to be no > lower than the bottom of the ear lobe. These guidelines are stated in the Wawasee high school

GREGORY CARPENTER handbook and are in agreement with school philosophy. Girls will not be permitted to wear pant suits, slacks or sandals.” The last sentence of the letter requested parents who had questions to contact the school office. To date, comments from parents have upheld the wishes of the senior class executive council to require appearance standards. Regarding the controversy over commencement rules, the board has taken the position that since attendance at and participation in the commencement program is not required for the obtaining of a diploma from Wawasee high school, but is a ceremony provided for those who wish to participate, that rules and regulations governing the program must remain with those delegated the responsibility for conducting the exercise. When the rights of the school to control those permissive programs which are not required for an educat ion are removed from the jurisdiction of the school, other means of satisfying certain requested programs will be sought.,
