Birds don't complain about the chow. Food For The Birds? At Least They Like It
By ANN RUDY Copley News Service Wanting to get a better look at the birds in my neighborhood, I bought a feeding station, filled it with wild bird seed, and set it on the balcony outside our living room window. And I found out I’ve been preparing meals for the wrong group. It’s the first time in 10 years anything I’ve served has been fought over. The last time I made a pot of beef stew for my family it was received with sighs and groans. “What's the matter with this?’’ I asked as I ladled out generous helpings to all against their will. They had a lot of vague objections, the most cutting of which was that my stew was worse than the stuff in the school cafeteria. I told them they would do well to take a lesson from the birds who ate what I set out with great enthusiasm. And of course they informed me that they always said my
Mr. Whitehead and the former Dorothy Warstler were married March 26, 1921 by the late Rev. Raleigh Neff at the home of the bride’s parents. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Warstler of r 1 Syracuse. cooking was for the birds. Even so, I persisted, there has never been a case of rickets or • beriberi in our household. My son made a snide remark about the powers of peanut butter as a preventive medicine, and I gave him another helping of stew to get even with him. “Another thing," I continued, “those birds eat at regular hours. They all flock in together twice a day, and that’s more than I can say for any of you. The last time we all sat down together was at the moviffe.” “Pass the catsup,” said my husband and I had a feeling the subject was closed. Still, it is nice to know that my culinary inferiority complex is on the mend. Because up there in the sky I know there’s a lot more smiling down on me than a bucket of chicken. There’s any number of fine, feathered friends who think my wild seeds are the greatest. Frankly, I don’t know how I do it — I haven’t poured a bad plate of seed yet.
