Jon Roberts Learns Os Dairy Herds In Panama
Buenos dias Amigos, de Panama, Just a few days ago I arrived at the home of my final host family in Panama. In talking with them I learned they had a dairy herd of 32 cows on their farm. Immediately they asked if I would like to go along to milk the next morning. I said that I woud be more than glad to help. At 5 a.m. the next day my host father woke me and said it was time to go milk. After a quick breakfast, my host brother and I started off on horseback .with some milk cans. My father said he would take the short cut across the fields and have things started before my host brother and I arrived. After an hours ride along the road and through one field, we arrived at the farm where the cows were. All I saw was a corral

full of cattle- and some calves outside. My host father and hired man had already started milking. I wondered aloud how they held the cows still for milking. My host brother smiled and told me to wait and see. When I went into the corral. I saw just how it was done. First, they let one calf at a time in the corral to go to its mother. Then as the calf started to suck, they tied the back legs of the cow together to keep her from kicking. After that they put a rope around the neck of the calf and tied it to a front leg of the cow. Then all that was left to do was to put the bucket under the cow and start milking. After all 32 cows were milked, I asked my host father if he did it the same way in the evening. He told me that although some of the

more modem dairies in Panama milk twice day, he had found that his cows gave the same amount in one milking as they did in two. Also, in this way the calves can have the rest Os the milk the cow produces during the morning. The calves are separated from the cows around two o’clock in the afternoon. Thus, no extra feed has to be purchased for the calves and there is no time involved in feeding them. My host brother and I then loaded the milk cans on our horses and took them to the road where immediately a truck came to pick them up. I was told that the milk would be in the processing plant by 9 a.m., just a few hours after it left the cow. Hasta lleugo, Jon Roberts
