But then a catastrophy happened Without any of us knowing. A fire started in our clubroom Which grew to be quite large Things just happened so fast It really seemed like a mirage. Not only did our clubroom burn But so did the entire block As firemen fought fearlessly The spectators began to flock. It took the neighboring firemen To help get the flame cooled .down But by then it was too late For none of our records could be found. Now we have to start all over And work harder than before But we need a meeting place Before we can do much more. So we the Minnie Mizers Are in dire need of a home Then we can settle down again And hope never more to roam. TTY Installed At Crossroads Center INDIANAPOLIS - A teletypewriter communications system has been installed at Crossroads Rehabilitation Center through a $3,840 grant from the federal Vocational Rehabilitation Division. Additional TTY’s have been connected at Tradewinds Rehabilitation Center. Gary; The Rehabilitation Center, Evansville. Mrs Virginia Johnson's half-way house. 562 west Drive, Woodruff Place. Indianapolis; and in the office of Douglas S. Slasor. supervisor, Deaf and Special programs, Indiana Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. The new installations will connect with an already existing system used on the campus of the Indiana School for the Deaf. The grant was arranged by Walter Penrod, state director. Vocational Rehabilitation Division. This unique communications system will enable deaf counselors and clients to use the telephone without the need for a third party. Deaf persons may now carry on a converstation with the aid of an acoustical converter and a teletypewriter at both ends of the telephone line. Conversation is typed back and forth on the teletypewriters; the acoustical converter converts the electrical impulses generated within the teletypewriter into high pitched sounds which are then transmitted over the telephone to the other end. After the high pitched sounds reach the ocher end. the acoustical conveter translates the sound into electrical impulses which operate die TTY. According to Eugene Peterson. Crossroads supervisor of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, there are approximately 1200 TTY units in the United States. Various cities, including Indianapolis, offer telephone answering service for a nominal fee. Further information about the TTY system may be obtained by calling or writing Crossroads Rehabilitation Center, 3242 Sutherland Ave.. Indianapolis.
