14 YEARS AGO. FEB. 14.1957 A new sander was installed on the street department truck according to Don Brumbaugh, Milford street superintendent. The sander is self-feeding and is operated by a chain drive from the back dual wheel It spreads a 7‘i-foot path of sand, pea gravel, salt, calcium, or cinders. One load will cover a distance of five miles. . Charles Lee Hollar, 78. passed away Monday at his home. He was married August 24. 1907. to Goldie Sharp, who survives, as do a son. Clayton Hollar, and a daughter. Mrs Ralph (Gladys) Berkeypile. , Miss Marilyn Kav Galloway. Leesburg, and George A. Bullock IV of Milford were married in Saint John’s Episcopal church in Elkhart Saturday, Jan 26 There, are six patients at the Orn nursing home in Milford at the present time They are Mrs. Ida Scott. Mrs Ada Gunther, Mrs. Alice Sumpter. Mrs Jemima Carrier. Jacob Clauss, and Emil Sorensen Mrs George (Dorotha Warstler • Bullock has accepted the position of bookkeeper at the Sharp j Hardware Company, taking the place of Mrs. E. R Hurd, who has resigned. Sixty students of the two third grades m the Milford elementary school entertained their mothers Thursday afternoon. The team was sponsored by the ParentTeachers Association and the teachers. Mrs Rathbun and Mrs Locke, were introduced by the PT A president, Mrs Kenneth Hagan Hastings by Mrs Robert Rumfelt The message text given by La Verne Soales at the Sunday services was “Only Let Your Manrier of Life Be Worthy of the Gospel of Christ.’’ Phil ’.1:27-30. law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Yarian. 24 YEARS AGO, FEB. 13.1947 The boy scouts, in uniform, attended the Sunday morning service at the Methodist church. Rev L. Lyle Case used for the text of his sermon, "It Is No linger I That Live. But Christ That Lives In Me.” He stressed the thought that if the boy scouts live up to their scout oath and laws they will be living for Christ. Franklin Dean (blind) will be the guest speaker at the meeting of the Milford Lions club at the Milford Case Monday night. Mr. Dean is a director at the Hadley School for the Blind, located at Winnetka. 11l Fire of unknown origin did serious damage to the farm home of Mrs. Daniel Deeter, 77. Wednesday afternoon. The Deeter residence, located two miles southeast if Milford, was ablaze when—Milford fire department arrived at the scene. Mrs. Devon Moore, who lives just north of the Deeter home, first noticed the blaze coming from the roof and ran to the Deeter home to secure the safety of the aged resident. She then ran to the Marion Deeter (a son> home, nearby, to summon help, but Deeter was in Warsaw She stopped a passing car andasked that the occupants call the Milford fireman. Lawrence W Shultz of Camp Mack and North Manchester called at The Milford Mail office Monday afternoon We especially noticed his cap. a tall black fur one which he had bought in Sweden Mr. Shultz arrived home February 9 from a relief mission trip to Poland Because of a prevalence of influenza, the Elkhart county infirmary has been closed to visitors until further notice. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Young, Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Beiswanger. and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Judkins attended the "Hour of Charm" program by the all-girl orchestra under the direction of Phil Spitainy in South Bend Monday evening. 30 YE ARS AGO, FEB. 13.1971 Harry Haab, who no doubt will be Milford’s first contribution to the nation's selective service draft of men, received word from the county draft board this week that, should the number of volunteer enlistments in the county decrease, it would be sometime in March when he would be called for active training in the United States army. Howard Haab. Vaughn Harfield. and Wilbur Roe. all Bedell Manufacturing employees, are enrolled in the drafting course given at the Warsaw high school under the government’s national defense program. Robert Higbee. Jr.. Detroit, former Milford resident and graduate of Milford high school with the class of 1930. is a member of the U.S. armyj stationed at| Hamilton Field in California, it was learned by The Milford Mail. Mrs. C. E. Young was a very pleasing hostess at a quilting party and a delightful noon-day dinner Friday for the Mesdames Walter Krider, Azie Tucker. Chester Overleese. John Davidsen. Charles Dressel. Howard Love, Albert Groves, A. D. Wilson, and George Rassi. and the Misses Anna Rodibaugh and Ellen Davidsen. A large audience witnessed the presentation of the drama. "Senator North’s Deciding Vote" at the Christian church Sunday evening. Local persons participating in the drama were Max Wagoner, Joan Gause. Robert Brown. Cleveland Shuder. W. W. The primary department of the Methodist Sunday school enjoyed a Saint Valentine party at the home of Mrs. Orville Lutes, north of Milford. Tuesday after school hours Mrs Lutes is superintendent of the department and the teachers are Mrs. Gayton Hollar. Mrs. John Method, and Miss Joan Clause. Nelson Overleese. who is employed in Elkhart, and Miss Pauline Kurtz of South Bend were Sunday dinner, guests of his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Overleese 40 YEARS AGO. FEB. 12,1931 A $50,000 fire which started' from an oil-burning furnace irr the basement of the C. A. \ Sparklin general store at 12:45* am last Friday, threatened the entire west side of the main business block in Milford and destroyed the three 2-story business rooms belonging to Mr. Sparklin and badly damaged a 2story business room belonging to J. W/ Myers. Some losses were: C. A. Sparklin, personal fur-
nishings; R. M. Method, personal furnishings; Mrs. Cora Rollins, personal furnishings; Mrs. Ida Enright and Robert Higbee, . personal furnishings; Misses Mildred and Grace Wenger, personal furnishings; and Robert Hoover, clothing. All of these persons lived in apartments above the store. Sammy Helminger is laid up with an injured foot through which two nails were run while at the scene of the Sparklin fire. A big crowd of persons from surrounding towns were in Milford Friday forenoon to view the ruins of the Sparklin fire in the business block. Cars were parked for several blocks in every direction. One hundred farmers from the Milford and New Paris communities went to Chicago early Tuesday morning where they were guests of the International Harvester Company during the day. The time in the city was spent in visiting the large plants where farm machinery and supplies are made. Sharp Hardware Company of Milford paid the expenses to and from Chicago and International Company paid all expenses of the visitors while in that city. The trip made by automobiles. Mrs. M. A. Harris entertained the Merry Jayne club Friday evening. A comforter was completed by the members. The Bedell Furniture Company was sold by the receivers Monday to T. H. Bedell of Marion on his bid of $6,500. Mr. Bedell was a former stockholder in the company. Miss Catherine Brower of Ligonier spent Friday and Saturday with Miss Edna Lentz and on Sunday both were guests of Loren Heckaman of Bremen. Legion Auxiliary 253 Chooses Girl Stater * Miss Sandra Strand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Strand, was chosen to go to Girls’ State by the American Legion Auxiliary Post 253 of North Webster at the February 2 meeting of the auxiliary. Miss Rhonda Huffman, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Ernest Huffman, was chosen as alternate delegate. President Margaret Kruger was unable to attend the meeting due to illness. The secretary’s and treasurer s reports were read and approved. The next meeting will be a carry in dinner at 6:30 p.m. February 16 with a valentine party for the Junior Auxiliary members. Members were reminded to make sure each one remembered her junior miss for this special occasion and to make sure she could attend. k A delicious luncheon of salad, rancy crackers, pie and coffee were served by Mrs. Ermal Vanator and Mrs. Iva Krouse Mr and Mrs. Urban Bauer. Cissna Park. DI., are on a vacation at Phoenix. Ariz. Mrs. Bauer is the former Mary Beer of Milford.
Brademas Names 20 Nominees To Academy
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman John Brademas (D-Ind.) has named 20 nominees from the Third Congressional District to compete for admission to the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado. Brademas made the selections on the basis of a special Gvil Service examination administered last fall. Brademas said three appointments 'to the Air Force Academy are open to residents of the Third District this year. The nominees are: Steve C. Bokor, Don B. Bolt, David J. Cherrone, Gregory A. Hedman, James D. Isham, • James R. Julow. Phillip L. Kendall, Gerald D. Lippert, Jr., Billy J. Pettit. Phillip R. Ridenour, and John P. Wissman, all of South Bend; Thomas R. Doyle. Edward F. Michael Fishbaugh was recently presented the good conduct medal for his honest and faithful service in keeping the highest traditions of the marine corps. Major W. H. Allen. Jr., made the presentation at the Yuma, Ariz., base. Michael has been stationed at the base since his return from 18 months in Viet Nam. Aboard L'.S.S. Kitty Hawk His brother, Navy Airman Stephen Fishbaugh, stationed in the Phillipines has been assigned on a Det 110 tour aboard the carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk for 6090 days.
