Warriors Win Conference Meet Saturday; Tie Warsaw For NIC Wrestling Title

By JOHN Bahn I The Wawasee high school wrestling team under the , leadership of coach Terry Frank brought honors to the 'school last Saturday when they took first place at the Northern Lakes Conference meet held in Plymouth. The Warriors scored another important victory on Monday as they defeated the Concord Minutemen in a make-up match. The victory gave them a tie with Warsaw for the NLC conference championship. Points towards the season championship are awarded both on the basis of the season standing and the finish in the NLC tourney. Warsaw finished the season with a perfect 7-0 record while Wawasee was stopped by the Tigers 29-24 for a 6-1 season. Wawasee. however, won the tourney with Warsaw placing second thus creating the tie for the championship.

Saturday Wawasee wrestlers took two firsts. five seconds and three fourths for a total of 90 points This gave the Warriors a 25 point lead over Warsaw who placed second- with 65 points Concord was third with 51

HYW — Dave Baumgartner received a pin in the first match but was pinned by Concord’s Denny Madlem and by Warsaw’s Gary McCleary in the con solation. Wawasee’s Steve Cobum was decisioned in the first match. Concord Meet The varsity wrestlers brought the school’s NLC title home Monday night when they defeated Concord 29-18 The game had been re-scheduled after it was postponed due to bad weather late in January Three pins were credited to Wawasee. SECOND PLACE HONORS — Another Wawasee wrestler who walked off with second place honors Saturday was Mark Treesh. Mark wrestles in the 107 pound class. He received one pin and one overtime decision before being decisioned by Gary Eberly of Manchester. Mark was one of five WHS wrestlers to capture second place honors in the tourney.
