mo Mfr Another picture of the Pickwick Block of Syracuse appears in this issue, a post card loaned by Mrs Chester (Agnes Causer* Stiffler, under a remodeling program by the late W E Long We are told Mr. Long had offices. his own. and rentals in the upper level, corner-front, of the large corner building and that the American Red Cross' held meetings and work clinics in the rooms above and along north Huntington street. The Knights of Pythias also held meetings in these rooms. Research shows the remodeling program was started in September 1936 following the purchase of < the block by Mr. Long Among occupants in the block is the Syracuse Journal which changed it’s name to the Indiana Journal on March 25. 1937. F. Allan Weatherholt was editor. A new location in the block was sought for this business in the

K Bennett, proprietor of the Recreation Bowling Club located in the block, will move into the former Variety Store location where a new and all modem billard parlor, bowling alley and recreation center was being planned The theatre will have an exterior English style with 500 modern seats, new sound and projection equipment, a new silver screen and stage 15 x 30 with equipment for productions and vaudeville, plus lounges, restrooms and the works. This was officially opened in April 1937. (You will remember several issues back of the Oakland ' theatre burning in August 1925 and we were informed by long distance from Mrs Dial Rogers of South Bend that this date was correct as the theatre was owned by her father. ,E. the school yard with plans for several hundred more to be planted in the community in the near future. The huge arch was erected for the dedication and opening of the resort season. As to when the arch was removed is not certain. Estella Swartz, who at 89 claims to be the “second oldest native of Syracuse,” recalls the 1901 Pickwick Block fire being in April or May of 1901. She said she was married June 15. 1901, and the fire “a month or two” before she was married. “1 remember it well.” she recalls. She said she remembers talking to Richard Guy, father of Emory Guy, who owned the corner building then occupied by William Strieby and his general store The opera house was on the second floor. Street employees were out nice and early on several snowymornings. snow blade and all. with sidewalks cleared before uptow n businesses opened for the day. One bad spot is the steps leading to and from the upper parking lot at the alley. Wouldn't an iron railing be nice?! Plus a little salt on the steeper steps behind office. Joe Todd claims uptown Syracuse merchants are not. exploiting the city pier, urging lake residents to "come to town by boat.” He might just have something there.

Detailed Report Given By State Department A detailed report of activity during the last year was announced today by the Enforcement Division of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The Enforcement Division has an authorized strength of 131 Conservation Officers. These officers are responsible for Fish and Wildlife, boating and all other law enforcement for the various Divisions of the Department. In addition, the 1969 Indiana General Assembly amended the law giving added police authority to Conservation Officers and enabling them to enforce misdemeanors on property owned, leased ot managed by the department. The Division assigns 117 field men to enforce these various laws. Last year Conservation Officers made 1,429 arrests for boating violations and 2,419 .fish and wildlife arrests. Under the new authority authorized by the Legislature, 1,979 arrests for public intoxication, disorderlyconduct, illegal entry and hunting without permission were made. The 1969 Legislature amended the trash-dumping law, giving officers the authority to arrest persons guilty of polluting or dumping trash in unauthorized areas—29l arrests were made while 178 offenders were issued warning tickets for violation of this law. Deborah Money Interning In Lake Co., Ohio The pffice of field studies at Lake Erie college has announced the academic internships of 14 students during the college's winter term in various offices in Lake county, Ohio, where the college is located. As interns, students are offered an invaluable opportunity for first-hand observation and actual participation in business, government, industry, education, social services, and the fine arts. Miss Deborah Money, a senior, is interning at the Lake County Society for Crippled Children and Adults, under the direction of the physical therapist. The field studies program was initiated at Lake Erie college in the fall of 1967 through a gift from the Grant foundation. Since then, more than 200 stydents have participated in the program. The office of field studies, directed by Miss Gladys Haddad, assistant professor of education, also offers summer internships *lO weeks in lengtfr with 60 cooperating institutions and internships which are carried out while the student is abroad during the winter term of her junior year. The person who says he enjoys a cold shower in the morning will lie about other things.
