Snowmobiles Not Allowed Qn Highways Snowmobiles, objects of one of the biggest booms in winter sports history, are also attracting the angry attention of some rural property owners and law enforcement officials. The popularity of snowmobiling, reflected in increasing sales of the special purpose vehicles, prompted a warning from State Police Superintendent Robert K. Konkle that their operation on streets, highways and other right-of-ways violates Indiana traffic laws. Snowmobiles cannot be licensed, Konkle explained, because they do not meet required motor vehicle standards. Numerous injuries and deaths in snowmobile accidents have been reported in Canada and many of our northern states, Konkle noted. By contrast, only one fatal accident involving a snowmobile has been recorded in Indiana this winter. But. he went on. the complaints are growing of snowmobilers traveling rural roads and trespassing on private property damaging fences, winter crops, lawns and golf courses. • Public awareness and concern for the scope of Hoosier snowmobiling has resulted in legislation introduced in the 1971 General Assembly, now in session. House Bill 1175, introduced by State Representative Ralph R. Heine (R-Columbia City > and assigned to the House Public Service Committee, is a comprehensive bill concerning the registration and safe operation erf snowmobiles.
