Milford\tudents made a very good showing in the northern Indiana piano and vocal contest held at Plymouth Saturday. Three soloists qualified for the state music contest which will be held at Butler university February 23. They are Judith Martin. Sharon Dewart, and Robert Ahrns. Rev. Kenneth Watts has accepted the pastorate of the Nazarene church in Milford. Rev. Watts and his family came from Arcola. 111. He is a graduate of Olivet Nazarene college at Kankakee. 111. Dennis Sharp \v£nt to Indianapolis and served as a page in the House of Representative of the State Legislature on Tuesday. Marvin Kelly. Jr., has received his service discharge and is visiting relatives in Milford. He is staying with Mrs. Fred Slabaugh. a cousin, at New Paris. Mr. Kelly has decided to make the armed forces his life career and will go to Dayton. Ohio, and re-enlist February 11. He has traveled extensively while in the service of his country, and hopes to see even more of the world in the next few years. JAN. 30, 1947 Rev. Darrel J. Norwood, formerly of Milford, now of Danville, Ky., gave a 35 x 45 inch picture entitled, “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” to the Christian church. The picture was given in remembrance of Mrs. Norwood, who passed away while Rev. Norwood was pastor of the church. Harry Haab, Herbert Felkner, and Harold Kaiser entertained members of the Milford basketball team at a steak supper Tuesday at the Melody Case. The new name of the Mark Annex is Melody Case. In a contest to change the name. Mrs. Otto Wiggs and Roy Arnold submitted the same name. They will share five dollars. Barney Craig was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Beer Tuesday. Ligonier. The Milford Independents won a close game Tuesday night from Manchester college “B” squad 31-34. Phend, Haab, Estep, Kaiser, Auer, Brumbaugh, and Hartter made the trip. Charles Weisser spent several days this week working at the Opseth store. Jimmy Brock, young middleweight boxer who resides several miles west of Milford, has entered the Golden Glove fights at Fort Wayne for the second time, preliminaries of which begin Monday night. James Fuller. Jr., of Rochester and Albert Henry Bird are forming a partnership in the business of both interior and exterior decorating. A marriage ceremony was performed at the Oblate' Mission House at Ligonier at 11 a.m. Saturday, when Frances Stechcon of that city became the bride of J. Arthur Downes of near Milford. Father Haggerty read the rite. Samuel Brumbaugh. 22. son of 4 Mr and Mrs. Victor Brumbaugh of Gravelton, died instantly Tuesday night at nine o’clock when the car in which he was riding slid from the road several miles south of Wakarusa and crashed into two large trees. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bucher entertained their bridge club Friday evening with four tables in progress. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Plummer of Leesburg were guests. A pound daughter, named Lois Jean, was born January 23 to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Godshalk of Bristol. The mother will be remembered as Marjorie Neely of Milford. Dale Wuthrich, who is employed at the Hobby House restaurant in Fort W’ayne. spent Sunday night and Monday with his mother, Mrs. Minnie Wuthrich. 40 YEARS AGO. JAN. 29. 1931 Four trains, including the “milkshake,” have been removed from the B & O schedule. The Milford Grain & Milling Company completed the ice harvest last Thursday. The company gave employment to about 35 men who filled the large house at Waubee lake with eight and nine inch ice which was of good quality. Miss Hazel Brittsan, teacher of the Daughters of Ruth Sunday school class, entertained the members at dinner at her home Tuesday evening. Betty Eherenman was presented a nice gift, it being her 12th birthday. Elizabeth Vanderveer won the prize in rook. Mary Dressel also was given a gift as she will leave Milford in the near future. Harry Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith of near Dewart lake and a freshman at Milford high school, had his leg broken Tuesday noon while playing in the gymnasium. The bones were fractured just above the ankle. Mrs. L. L. Scarlett entertained the Dorcas club last Thursday. Two comforters were made. A donation of $lO was accepted from the Sorosis club and added to the undernourished baby milk fund. Mrs. Emeral Jones will give a reading at the Farmers Institute Wednesday afternoon. Harold Orn of Leesburg assisted at the Lyon barber shop Saturday. Mr. Orn may be employed steady at the shop. The charity bridge held in the Miles room Tuesday night and sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary was attended by persons from Ligonier, Syracuse, Nappanee, Goshen. and Milford. Clayton Harlan Celebrates 90th Birthday Clayton Harlan, who lives west of Community Center on road 19, was the guest of honor Sunday when his family held open house on celebration of his 90th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan have five children, Mrs. Glenn (Lois) Rockhill, Etna Green; Miss Bernice Harlan. South Bend; Mrs. Wayne (Ethel Marie) Wood, rural route Nappanee; Warren Harlan. Cincinnati, Ohio and Rev Lloyd Harlan of Yoder. Relatives from Milford who attended included Mr. and Mrs. Harry Good, Fred Harlan and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kerlin. No Injuries In Saturday Mishap Syracuse police investigated a two-car accident at 6:40 Saturdays, night on the parallel road in the Village near The Old and New Shop resulting in $625 to both vehicles. No one was injured. A 1964 Buick two-door driven by Linda R. Hoover, 22, r 3 Syracuse and a 1962 Plymouth operated by Sharon M. Fackler, 17, of r 1 Syracuse, collided. There was $275 in damages listed to the Buick and $350 to the Fackler Plymouth. Rev. Arthur Tinkle of Wabash was the guest speaker at the First Brethren church in Milford. Sunday, and will continue to serve the church until a resident pastor is secured.

Pomona Grange Has Potluck Supper Jan. 21 The St-Mar-Kos Pomona Grange, made up of members from St. Joseph, Marshall and Kosciusko counties, met Thursday evening, Jan. 21, at the Bremen Grange hall. A potluck supper was held before the regular meeting which was presided over by Arthur Heckaman, master. Reports from subordinate granges. Bremen, Waubee (Milford) and New Tamarack were given. Due to the illness of Mrs. Richard Heyde,, who has been chairman of the Woman’s Activities committee. Mrs. Herman Miller of Milford was appointed as chairman to serve during the remainder of the year. She reported on the meeting held in LaPorte recently for officers of the district. There will be a dressmaking contest, again sponsored by McCall’s Patterns. Coats and Clark. Inc. and others. There will be three classes, any material may be used, and each class will include pants suits and will be open to non-members as well as members. On the state level, projects will be for members only and will be held in Indianapolis, October 21, and 23. Other Pomona members who attended the district meeting were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Heckaman. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Ora Trader, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Miller, Mrs. Kathryn Sheets and Mrs. Carrie Pritch. Mrs. Ora Trader, lecturer, distributed the year's program books and reported that Russell Jacque was still ill. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “Onward Worthy Grangers” were sung by the group accompanied by Mrs. Maybelle BonDurant, pianist. She reminded the members to enter the photo contest. Ora Trader read “A New Year is a New Chance”. Otho BonDurant, legislative chairman, discussed the new laws that are to be brought up before the Congress. An open discussion was held concerning tax laws and air pollution. Mrs. BonDurant read an article on “Welfare” with comments. The lecturer closed the program by reading “God Bless Thy Year”.
