. AROUND 2f JL—T w • c< — We are sure many questions will arise and some may be answered for us in the accompanying photo of the Pickwick Block in Syracuse before the January 6, 1901 fire which was said to have started on a Sunday night in the grocery store with cause unknown < Mrs. J. S. Pritchard, daughter of former Syracusean A. H. Blanchard. journeyed to °Syracuse recently from Howe where she and her minister husband are now serving, to bring us a collection of old pictures of the Syracuse area. She did supply us with the information that the large brick building on the corner belonged to S. L Ketrmg. grandfather of our town's Richard Miller A prominent businessman, he was said to have a dry goods and mercantile business, among other things Local residents. Joe Bushong, •‘Midge" ‘Hire and Ken Harkless, have volunteered additional bits of information regarding the block shown above, however, not all identification seems to agree. We identify the white house on the hill at the extreme right of the picture as belonging to Dr BF Hoy and though much =; remodeling has taken place over the years still stands on this site. A small wooden shack can be seen north of the house approximately where the alley-way is now located in that block, and what was in this frame building has not been determined. We are advised one of the buildings shown here housed the post office, however, another tells us the post office was never located in this block so we are at a standstill here The old Opera House was

located in the upper rooms of the Ketring building and information was uncertain as to another entrance to the upstairs area besides the long outside and appearingly steep stairs. A number of old barrels can be seen beneath the stairs. I ndefinable is the wording on the large post at the corner of the building might have supplied more information as to businesses in the block. The word Drugs can be seen above one of the frame buildings and we are told there was a drugstore located in the block. Joe Miller was associated here. We have determined a grocerystore is the third building from the corner. The large white post, seemingly in front of the drug store, has an ornamental decor with only one word we are able to decipher - Goods Advisors also inform us Grandma Benner had a dressmaking and millinery store in this block next to the alley (the building near far left where two ladies can be seen and this is also the building identified earlier as the post office>, and that there was a 5 cent and 10 cent store in the block which might account for the next buildjng by the grocery. A long study of this picture will give a true idea of the lay of the land and what is now the 100 block of north Huntington street and the steep hill of today Mrs. Pritchard, the former Ruth Blanchard, was a teacher in the Syracuse and North Webster school system and took piano lessons from Jessie Young of Milford. . Rev and Mrs Pritchard served local churches inlhe area for a number of years prior to taking pastorates in other towns and moved from the Syracuse area to Howe last year after serving the Solomon’s Creek -church north vA Syracuse for nearly two years They have a son. The photo was a gathering in uptown Syracuse for a homecoming festivity, band and all. and was loaned us by Eaton Clayton of Syracuse. Getting good, capable substitute teachers is always a problem for school administrators. WHS principal Henry Smith reports this year an excellent substitute staff has been recruited, one that will respond on. very short notice. ".And they're teachers, too.” he stated, "not babysitters." John Snell. Warsaw ladies' apparel reports this gem: The county coroner is the onlyperson who can arrest the county sheriff. Now. there’s something we ll bet you didh’t know Mike Kurtz, former WHS junior varisty coach now holding the same post with the Goshen junior Redskins, has had a number of offers from larger schools but plans to return to Goshen next year, with good prospects looming on the horizon. Mike and his wife would like to build a new home near Goshen. Mrs. Ken Harkless is in receipt of a letter sent her regarding pant suits. A non-owner of the newest “in" thing for ladies, we detect a slight notion she may be in the market for one in the near future. Due to arm surgery for injuries in a recent accident, young Joni Hawk, Wawasee high cheerleader, may be sidelined for a while, but not too long-if she has her way we feel.

Attendants at the hospital know what her letter sweater "really” means to her. don't they Joni? Syracuse police to the rescue! The chief of police, no less, was the officer on duty Friday morning when a call was placed to the local police department for assistance of a small tan dog bumped by a car at the main intersection of town. Huddled in the doorway of the bank building, the cog found comfort in the lobby of the bank when a kind soul opened the door at an opportune time. Vanderßeyden was carrying the dog across the street a short time later. Area people who are "bugged” by junk cars seen lying around have good news coming their way. Our local reclamation expert. Sam Swedarsky, is advertising that he will “pay cash" for junk cars brought to his lot. This will be welcomed news to those complaining about junk cars and other rubbish on the vacant lot at 950 E on 13A and 1250 N at the railroad tracks, an area of approximately two acres.
