A GIFT OF STORAGE LAFAYETTE - A Christmas gift of storage. How practical. Miss Ezelle Johnson, extension home furnishing specialist at Purdue university, suggests that a handsome armoire, highboy, chest-on-chest, or wardrobe might make the “perfect” lasting gift. The armoire, a French word meaning closet, has always been necessary to Europeans with their very limited closet space. A decade ago. this majestic piece of furniture was found only in very 7 high-style lines in this country—and very infrequently there. In the last four or five years, however, they have been added to collections by producers of medium and high-medium priced furniture. Armoires were formally purchased only by men in this country, but women now find their orderly arrangement and tremendous storage capacity irresistible. Many producers of high style armoires sell them in pairs (his and hers) with a bridge between for use as a dressing table or desk. Families with plentiful budgets

may choose an exquisite, marvelously proportioned design? reaching heights of 76 to 93 inches. Though varying interior arrangements, these are suitable for use in either bedroom or living room. They may be fitted with drawers, shelves, mirror and tie-rack for bedroom; without these fittings they may be suited for customadaptation of a stereo or other items of choice. Cost may run as high as $2,000$3,000. i Manufacturers producing medium or high-medium price bracket furniture have added armoires priced more in line with average family budgets — selling for under SSOO. Highboys were a favorite for storage in colonial days. Less statuesque than armoires, many stand tall and graceful on Queen Ann legs. These may sell for S3OO to S4OO. Though not as tall, the chest-on-chest in solid woods are around 55 inches tall, with seven or eight drawers, and sell in the S2OO to S4OO price range. For a smaller room, a chest-on-chest is preferred. Wardrobes, probably the more popular, have hanging space, drawers, and shelves behind double doors. Some very nice wardrobes may be purchased for about S2OO. As you shop around, you will find a variety of these useful storage pieces and can select what best fits your needs. Emory Guy of Mission, Texas, left today (Wednesday) for his home following a visit in the Syracuse area.
